Hi . Posting here for traffic but really I just need help. I don’t know what to do. DD rang me an hour ago from her flat at uni 100s of miles away. Said she felt ‘schizophrenic’. Wanted to go to hospital. Admitted she’d taken an edible at a uni party . I don’t know anything really about edibles as they weren’t around when I was at uni. I assume they are cannabis. I spent 20 mins talking her down and telling her all would be fine. Listen to some music. Try to relax. She said she was going to the loo. I said ok call me back as soon as you’re finished. I have called her 20 times she’s not answering. DH reckons she’s fallen asleep and ‘will be fine’. What to do? Can I assume she’s ok? Do I need to call the halls of residence to do a welfare check? I don’t even know her flat number

I would get a welfare check!

Polly199068 · 27/11/2025 23:42

I’d contact whoever I could to check on her

YepIChangedMyNameForThis · 27/11/2025 23:42

How worrying for you. I'm with your DH, she has crashed out.

Usernamedulychanged · 27/11/2025 23:43

Ok thanks for the sanity check. Shit. I will do that

Bad trip is a bit dramatic. Used to call it a white out in my day. She'll be fine. Better at home than on the streets of Amsterdam, or a festival........ 🙄

Redwinedaze · 27/11/2025 23:45

Welfare check!

Lunagold · 27/11/2025 23:45

If it's just weed she will be fine. Tell her to drink something really sweet like orange juice or coke. The sugar helps stop the trip

Oh I didn’t know that. That’s useful knowledge. Thank you. I just wish she’d answer the bloody phone

Definitely call for a welfare check. They are really good in halls and will be happy to do that. They will also be able to find her room number.

Going forwards, tomorrow get her to tell you her full address and room number and write it down, so if you ever need to do anything like this again, for whatever reason, you'll have it at hand.

I hope she's OK, it's so stressful not being nearby to be able to keep an eye on them like we're used to x

RNApolymerase · 27/11/2025 23:47

Her hall of residence / campus will have a 24 hour safety number you can call to get someone to check on her.

Yeah hopefully. That was just how she described it. She was saying she didn’t think I was real when she was talking to me . It was incredibly disturbing to hear long distance . I used to do all manner of stupid shit in the 90s but I have no idea what they get up to these days .

Does she have someone in her flat to keep an eye on her.

As someone who had 2 children at that age including one at uni you have to go by your instincts. The younger of the 2 I wouldn’t be worried by that message, the older id be worried because it’s not them.

Only you know which response you need to do.

Stucknstoopit · 27/11/2025 23:53

Edibles were definitely around when you were at uni….they just weren’t called ‘edibles’ , more likely known as hash cakes or hash cookies back in the day, much stronger when cooked.
it is generally weed and more recently ‘magic’ mushrooms are often made into edibles, most people eating them would know beforehand if it’s weed or mushrooms , either could cause a trip and depending on strength / doseage , the mushroom trip could last much longer

The effects can last a good few hours and can be intense and maybe scary depending on variable factors but do dissipate over time.

If you are really worried and can’t get a welfare check done by uni and you’re still worried you can ask for local police to intervene.

Krakinou · 27/11/2025 23:56

I’m sure she will be totally fine and is probably sleeping, or has dropped her phone in the loo or something stupid. It’s just that niggling fear of what if.

At her age I once had to sleep on the floor behind the desk of a youth hostel because I’d smoked too much weed, had terrible paranoia that I was going to die, and was scared to stay in the dorm by myself! 🫣 At least I didn’t phone my mum I guess. People don’t talk enough about the drug side effect of being a prat.

Ladyzfactor · 27/11/2025 23:57

I'm definitely a recreational user of cannabis. ( It's legal where I live and I have a medical card.) She'll be fine. Don't do a welfare check. Nobody has ever overdosed on edibles and she won't be the first. She'll be fine in a few hours. Tell her to drink a soda or lemonade (actually lemons) and watch tv, preferably a documentary. I've been there done that. I would be so embarrassed if the cops checked on me when I was tripping but ok

This was literally me! Has cannabis oil and thought I’d died and was in a mental institute. Ended up in a catatonic state thinking I’d pissed myself (it was a hot water bottle 😆). She’ll be ok but it honestly took me a month to get over it emotionally! I was traumatised! Just tell her to get in bed and try to sleep, she will be ok physically but mentally it may take some time.

PollyBell · 27/11/2025 23:57

Maybe if you do a welfare check it might make her think and realise the police have better things to do that have to sort out unit students who can't control themselves and they can use their resources elsewhere, maybe she needs a wake up call

Oh right I get it - thanks for the translation into 90s youth speak . I’d assumed it was a sweet.

Haha that’s how I was! I didn’t believe my husband was real, I said “you’ll let me die and my husband would never let me die”. I then said get my mum here if this is real and she come flying “literally to me” through the door and had to wrestle the phone off me as I was calling an ambulance to “paddle” me back to life. Funny though but horrific at the time! Never ever ever again!

They can be a sweet, often weed gummies or lozenges or shroom chocolate etc, people make them at home or buy them online, things are very different from our youth in the 90s, I think of the mad conversations we used to have when under the influence and I don’t think any of us would have ever dreamed you could order anything like that on the World Wide Web 🤯

I wrote a response but mn blocked it, was basically saying that back in the 90s we would never have predicted some of this stuff happening the way it happens now and would definitely have thought it was a crazy pipe dream!

Swiftasthewind · 28/11/2025 00:05

She’s just having a good time, we all did this at uni, it’s like a rite of passage. For me and my friends we would go out and find a few lads who were up for some wild times and take them back to our digs, we’d pass each other round like we were parcels!

Oh those were good times. Met some great people, and some not so great but them’s the breaks! 🤭
