To think my mum has fallen down a conspiracy rabbit hole and I can't get her out

Coffeesoon · 25/11/2025 17:54

My mum has just sent me a video of Ant Middleton explaining how in 2027 the migrants / boat people who are seeking asylum and have already been made legal, will kick off and attack us all.
He says there will be a civil war, he knows because of army contacts and that we need to prepare.
What am I suppose to say to that?
She fully believes that an army is being formed and is constantly telling me or sending me videos about it.
I love my mum but since covid, which she thought wasn't real, she has been thinking the government is out to get us. We live in an area of increased immigrants and she absolutely hates them.
I've tried to talk to her but shes adamant and its really getting me down.

@Dollymylove I agree that the current system isnt working, but I dont think they are being put here to create an army and take over.

Definitely not the civil war scenario or race war has been a wet dream of the extreme far right for decades.

TY78910 · 25/11/2025 20:06

It’s a really sad world we live in and unfortunately social media algorithms are awful for this type of nonsense.

Maybe a little anecdote from the past to resonate? All the crap that was being spewed about the Jews (not just in) Germany and where that got us? They were being painted as vile scrounging rapists with no place in society just like migrants are being portrayed today. She can’t really argue with the holocaust.

Having an opinion that illegal immigration might not be beneficial for the country and actually questioning the influx of small boats and the growing illegal money making industry that comes off the back of them is not racist.
It's actually a bit thick to reply in such a way without thinking about any nuance around the subject.
Shouting racist at any and all opinions that differ from your own narrow veiwpoint is actually very lazy and actually dilutes the word itself and its true meaning and the insult/shutdown that you meant it as.

Yes exactly- there’s some very very deluded people on MN who don’t quite understand the reality of what is going on. It might be they live in areas not yet badly affected, or they don’t want to admit that there is an issue because they are scared of appearing “racist”.

i think those denying there are some serious problems with immigration as it stands are just as misled/brainwashed as the Ops mother. The truth lies somewhere in the middle

dottiedodah · 25/11/2025 20:10

Lots of older people have these kind of views.fed by DM GB news and so on. It's difficult for younger people to hear.maybe say you don't want to discuss it and go shopping or lunch out if possible. To take her mind off it

Bearbookagainandagain · 25/11/2025 20:13

My mum is exactly the same, but french. It used to be the civil war during covid, but since the Ukraine war it's move to that.

She spends hours scrolling Facebook and YouTube at nights, it's driving her mad...

Not responding to the crazy messages and links, and generally ignoring the topic has helped. We can have semi normal conversations when sticking to children, work...

ILoveDuckDuckGo · 25/11/2025 20:14

That is my MIL since she created an account on FB . There is no reasoning. You can’t change up her mind. It only gets worse and worse, especially with all the AI fake videos BS.

BonfireToffee · 25/11/2025 20:14

Sympathies, OP. My mother is the same and I’ve had to go no contact with her.

It’s not as simple as changing the topic or saying, “that’s nice, dear,” is it? If your mother is anything like mine, it’ll be incessant attempts to convince you, in person, via texts and DMs, and huge fallouts whenever the warped world view is challenged or not engaged with.

Its miserable, and I’m sorry you’re dealing with it x

I have a colleague at work who is of Lebanese descent who is always saying that eventually the UK will become predominantly a Muslim country and that all women will be subject to Sharia law... She's a bit obsessed with it. She always pointing out that all the immigrants are mainly Muslim males, including the Somalians... (I think she thinks they are less obvious than the Syrians & Afghanis).

Just goes to prove that it doesn't matter where you've originated from, can still be irrational.

And that's the point the truth is somewhere in the middle.
We are not heading for civil war or a race war.
Agreed we cannot have people wandering into the country but sticking up nylon flags made in china,Tommy Robinson ,Farage are definitely not the answer.

trustybread · 25/11/2025 20:16

There was an article recently in the Times about kids who are all being exposed to online content and whose parents get all their news from dubious online sources and believe some of these types of things, and the problems this can cause. It's worrying to read this thread in the same week.

I can understand people thinking well it's simple, you just cut out the nasty racists, but I think it must be hard if you think you're dealing with someone you love who has essentially been conned into thinking racist responses are justified (because they think some "they" or other really are out to get us). It's going to be harder to walk away then and not try to fix them.

Hereforthedramaz · 25/11/2025 20:16

No helpful advice OP, although sympathies.

But I read the whole thread before realising I had misread as Ant Mcpartlin and was very surprised he his life had gone in quite a dramatic direction!

sorry OP not helpful at all

@Dollymylove I agree that the current system isnt working, but I dont think they are being put here to create an army and take over.

To be clear

The video you saw is Ant Middleton and he has explicitly said this? For 2027?

I cannot see this helping his London mayor
campaign, but I'm not sure how seriously to take that anyway, given his criminal convictions.

Given the current climate, my first question has to be - is the video real?

before anyone says it, no, I do not see what he sees in my crystal ball!

IDoHaveACrystalBall · 25/11/2025 20:20

There are a lot of people out there posting very strange things purely for outrage, clicks, monetisation etc

It's no more bollocks than claiming that these men on their dinghies are asylum seekers, desperately seeking refuge from war and persecution. Or, that the boats are filled with women and children.

When all the evidence proves they're not.

They're filled with fighting age men, aged around 18-24 on average. Some have admitted to having a military background in the countries they have come from, including Afghanistan.

One had posted, when in another country, Snapchats of him surrounded by high-grade weapons. There's been talk that Jihadist camps have been emptying their men onto these boats and sending them to the UK. Some people have been told that some members of the Taliban have hopped aboard a dinghy and made the crossing!

Many of the men do not come from war-torn countries. 700 of them come from Albania-a country that is in the EU and ECHR, and not at war. Pakistan is also a common country of origin for these men. They're not doctors, engineers or scientists crossing the Channel, dropping their documents into the water, are they or do you all think they are?

In areas where these men, and it is primarily men, are housed, there's countless reports of women and children being harassed, followed and even raped by these men. Sure, it's not all of them, but many come from the worst parts of the world where women's rights simply don't exist, especially Western, white women's rights.

Where child marriage is legal and normal. We've had Pakistani men who have crossed the Channel, arranging to meet 14 year olds to rape them and when caught by the parents/community-have been filmed on camera saying, "Oh, I didn't know it was illegal here!"

An Afghan national has just admitted raping a 12 year old. An 8 year old was recently raped by a migrant in Lambeth. A woman was dragged into bushes and raped. Another woman, in Brighton or Bristol, I believe, was dragged onto a beach by three migrants and raped.

I'm not saying they're building an army-but we have no way of knowing who they are or what they really want. They are being placed with limited to no supervision in the heart of our communities without our say so on even consulting us-many times near schools or children's parks.

It all might seem a great big conspiracy theory-and it probably is. The majority of the men are just chancers who know that they're going to get a free ride here-and like the fools we are-we do it.

But how many women and children need to be harassed, followed and raped by these men before any of you give a damn? We know people have also been murdered by them, including Wayne Broadhurst and Rhiannon-Skye White. How many, in your eyes, is too many?

And before you all rush to slam me with "the majority of crime is committed by white men!" Yes, no shit, Sherlock. In a predominantly white country, most of the crime statistics will be filled with white men. "Or white people rape and murder people, too!"

Again, no shit, Sherlock. We have homegrown criminals. Every country does-and we deal with them. What you don't do is import yet more of them. That's like telling someone who has stomach cancer that they're going to implant a tumour in their brain because what's another tumour when they've already got one?

We're allowing men from the most violent parts of the world to come into country, putting them up in hotels and HMO's with minimal supervision and paying through the nose for them and some of them are repaying us by raping our women and children and in some cases, murdering us.

But sure, you all stick your heads in the sand and pretend everything is hunky-dory. Nothing to see here. And use your usual insults whilst you're at it-"racist! far right! fascist!"

Guess what? Most people don't care about being called that anymore. It doesn't work. Call us all gammons, too, whilst you're at it, but maybe, just maybe, instead of convincing yourself that this is all fear-mongering nonsense, you should wake up.

It's not just happening here, either. Look at Ireland. France. Italy. Germany. All over Europe. A twenty-year old Italian girl was raped by three African migrants whilst her boyfriend was forced to watch. That was just recently.

There's been many more instances. England is now the rape capital of Europe, overtaking Sweden. You know-Sweden. A place that was once considered one of the safest, happiest places in Europe. Yeah, that now has no-go zones. So what happened? Did the Swedish men suddenly turn extremely violent and rapey?

But now England has took the crown for being the rape capital of Europe. Bravo, well done us. I can't think what could have happened.

BruFord · 25/11/2025 20:23

My in-laws (mid-80’s) have become increasingly frightened of “bad things” happening, they seem to forget that they were young during the Cold War when the threat of nuclear war was very real at certain times.

They don’t say what your Mum does, but they see the world as a far more scary place than it used to be. I think it’s partly because technology means that information travels so quickly that we now hear all the details of disasters/accidents/political events that would be sparsely covered in newspapers 30-40 years ago.

I’m sure that they see all sorts of opinions online without realizing that it’s not properly sourced journalism, it’s just someone spouting off a biased opinion.

If they get really het up about something, my DH asks them where they heard this and explains that the source is likely to be biased.

Arran2024 · 25/11/2025 20:26

My brother in law is so far down the conspiracy theory rabbit hole and has been for years. He has been expecting the collapse of the current world order for about 10 years now. He believes the Royal Family are all lizards, that most senior politicians are dead and are being played by actors. Just about everything we see on TV is fake news. He is anti vaccine, anti just about anything in fact.

He is exhausting to be around.

We don't allow him to get into his theories at Family get together any more. Everyone just scoffs at him. He of course thinks we are all deluded.

Not easy. I feel for you. They won't listen to reasonable counter arguments of course so no point in trying.

Yes, sticking Palestinian flags everywhere was extremely irrational (I bet half those chanting from the river to the sea will happily head off to Dubai despite the Sudan situation) English Flags in response was somewhat inevitable.

We need to stop the undocumented immigration. We need to help people solve issues in their own country so there isn’t such mass migration.

People thinking immigration and that all these individuals are poor souls fleeing persecution are incredibly brain washed and deluded by the feeling that they are in the right are just as brainwashed as the army to take over the UK is arriving on dingies.

PoppyRoseBucky · 25/11/2025 20:33

I know my post was really long-but I am really sick of people who clearly don't pay any attention to what is going on because it clearly doesn't effect them (yet) telling those that do that they're being "radicalised" when they're not. They're just seeing what is happening in the country and noticing a pattern.

Now their conclusions may not be correct, but it's equally incorrect to suggest that all these men are doctors, engineers and scientists and as soon as they step foot onto our soil (magic soil, don't you know) they're going to adopt our values and abide by our laws and way of life. That's crazy thinking.

They're not poor bairns fleeing persecution, and if they were, the UK isn't the world's doss house. Many have travelled from upwards of 16 countries to arrive at the UK and come from Calais-where there is no war.

Marylou2 · 25/11/2025 20:33
