To think my mum has fallen down a conspiracy rabbit hole and I can't get her out

Coffeesoon · 25/11/2025 17:54

My mum has just sent me a video of Ant Middleton explaining how in 2027 the migrants / boat people who are seeking asylum and have already been made legal, will kick off and attack us all.
He says there will be a civil war, he knows because of army contacts and that we need to prepare.
What am I suppose to say to that?
She fully believes that an army is being formed and is constantly telling me or sending me videos about it.
I love my mum but since covid, which she thought wasn't real, she has been thinking the government is out to get us. We live in an area of increased immigrants and she absolutely hates them.
I've tried to talk to her but shes adamant and its really getting me down.

Covid was not out of the blue. We were 3 weeks behind Italy, You could overlay the graphs, move our start date 3 weeks after theirs and they were almost identical.. This is one of those pesky facts though.

That our (tory) government at the time chose to ignore this is another matter.

I noticed in covid the government keeping it quiet about the scale of the problem and the number infection. They didn't close schools till April, right after they went on live news to disclose formally the fact of an epidemic. And we got a text saying we couldn't go out side. It seemed to come out of almost no where. Then keeping the schools closed and open in alignment with whether they wanted the contagion to spread or slow. Recommending children to get the vaccine when it was statistically more dangerous to them than covid itself. It was all very secretive and un- transparent and I believe that has caused people to remove their trust in them

Come out of nowhere? It had been pretty obvious for weeks. I’d like to see these so called statistics.

Schools closed 23rd March? Are any comments in this correct. Talk about conspiracy theories!

Its just how I remember it, I remember looking at the newspapers saying there ware 100 cases in the UK. I knew and probably you knew because we were probably both on mumsnet talking about the fact there were thousands ! And the government saying things like "current low risk" and then suddenly we weren't allowed to go outside. It was weird !

sleepwouldbenice · 28/11/2025 13:17

Yes agreed on that front but just a month earlier
I am not fan of Johnson and co but I do recall for a while they were being told that the data modelling suggested we could ride through it with herd immunity then this advice changed ( mid Feb?). Personally I was complacent myself at that stage until early march with impacts from Italy being indesputable. I think its not locking down once that data advice changed that they are most criticised for.
I live in Merseyside we had a torrid time from September onwards really and again circuit breaker cuts earlier may have helped rather than tier 3 nonsense

MeouwKing · 28/11/2025 14:44

What's changed? I grew up in the 60s/70s, and I remember the old ladies with their cherished photographs of Enoch Powell.

Xmasdemon · 28/11/2025 14:51

I didnt know about this re scientist advice changing, I just remember being completely freaked out they were keeping the schools open. I wondered if they were trying to kill us, or just didn't care. I can see how some people did go the way they did re government

Of course Britain is attractive! You get over here, you get put up in a lovely room, you get fed, you're given money, you're given a phone, you can work (illegally, but no problem if you know a bloke who knows a bloke) and as long as you say you're gay, you'll never get kicked out. You can be a criminal, a rapist, an Islamist, whatever - no one's checking. You can ditch your family and come to another country where you get given everything and you don't even have to learn the language.

I'm sorry, but comments like yours sound so laughably naive to me. Have you ever been to a poor country? Britain is like a paradise compared to the places these men are coming from. It's wild to say that Britain's not that great. It makes you sound incredibly privileged.

Yes I have been to a poor country. You missed my point. But it's clear that logical clear thinking doesn't cut through on this subject, so I won't bother.

My grandmother was accused of being a conspiracy theorist in 1935.
She was a German Jew living in Berlin and in 1934 she saw a man with a mustache preaching.
She didn't like the look of him.
She was 25.
She tried to advise all of her Jewish contemporaries to leave Germany as soon as possible.
They scoffed and called her a conspiracy theorist.
Her husband and she left Germany to move to United Kingdom in 1935.
The friends that stayed didn't ever leave Germany again. 😔

But the Jews living in Germany and other European countries were the targets/victims of a racist eugenicist. The people and politicians that OP's mum supports are much more akin to Hitler with their views of racial supremacy and uncivilised foreigners polluting the pure British bloodline.

Another one
In summary very easy to find examples within 2 mins
There are discussions wider than your one track mind

You suggested that people on this thread have a list of concerns such as immigration, anti vaxx, covid etc. I said I hadn't seen any comments like that from people on this thread, i.e. no 'groupthink'. Then you pull up a bunch of comments from people talking about others outside this thread, as though that supports your point. It doesn't. But I suspect you knew that.

I hope you did, tbh.

Why don't you demonstrate some of your logical clear thinking? Tell me why Britain's so unattractive and how people don't want to come here. I'm happy to listen.

Most conspiracy theorists believe the same range of things from similar sources of repeated misinformation as mentioned by many commentators on this thread discussing friends and relatives and you can see the same traits on this thread. For example posters claiming that they are awake, can see the future of migration even if others are blind to it, references to other things I have mentioned ( eg ID cards, distrust of the establishment etc etc) saying they are rebelling against being labelled racist etc
There are plenty of people who woukd welcome a rational debate on immigration (how to address impact on some sectors, how to balance ethics with the pressure of genuine asylum seekers etc) but plenty just rant on and on, fuelled by misinformation and exaggeration...

You’re asking for clear logic, so here it is. It’s not that “no one” wants to come to Britain, it’s that we’re a lot less attractive than people like to pretend. If you arrive here with nothing, you’re looking at a slow asylum system, almost no right to work and a tiny allowance — about £49 a week if you’re self-catering, or under a tenner if meals are included. Those “free hotels” people shout about are just a sign the Home Office ran out of housing, not some luxury perk, and there’s no standard policy of handing out phones — that myth comes from a handful given out during COVID. Add on high living costs, strained public services and a very hostile political climate, and the UK doesn’t look like the easy ride people imagine. And here’s the bit everyone forgets: the migrants who do come often come because they already have family or community here. Diaspora networks shape routes far more than benefits ever could. People go where they have a chance of belonging, or at least a familiar language, not because Britain is uniquely generous. Compared with places like Germany or the Netherlands — faster decisions, more structured support, better integration — the idea that Britain is some irresistible magnet just doesn’t stack up.

You have no idea what that 49 quid a week plus a phone (often plus a job) means to people from places like Afghanistan or Somalia. It's riches. People come here because they get given money and housing and benefits and healthcare. To you, it might not seem so great, but to them, they get everything they need, and they don't have to do ANYTHING for it, not even learn the language. I remember in the 90s, lots of my friends were travelling around Europe, taking advantage of the benefits system in places like Holland. They found a way to take advantage of a system and they had no qualms about doing so. Of course people from poor countries are going to come to where they think they'll get everything for nothing. They are also flooding into Germany and the Netherlands - it's not just us.

I'm listening, but you're not saying anything? You just keep claiming that everyone who disagrees with you is a conspiracy theorist.

People have really mostly talked about immigration on this thread, and in a pretty calm and fair way, too. I don't see why you needed to come on and start accusing people of being conspiracy theorists when we are clearly just wanting to talk about concerns that most ordinary people in this country have. It's really only the white middle class rural/suburban bubble who don't seem to have a clue what's actually going on - I guess MN is the perfect place to find those people, though!

On what basis are you accusing me of having poor ethical standards? Because I understand that if you're living in a shithole and watching tiktoks about how you should come to the UK and get a house and a phone and benefits, most people are not going to think, hmm but is that fair to the native population? That's just reality. It's how people behave everywhere, especially these days when we are constantly bombarded with images of what other people have.

It's always the same, when you run out of arguments, you turn to personal abuse. Please stop. Get to grips with how to debate issues and put your point across without being a dick. Or maybe don't. We see that you don't have serious points to make, only name calling and anger.

I am really not sure you've read this thread.
Much of it was giving support to the OP with regards to their situation
About a qtr 1/3of it was trying to dispute a poster who claimed, amongst other things, a word salad covering ..

Thousands undocumented men roaming free
Will be civil war
Countless reports of woman and children being followed and harassed
Child marriage
Minimal supervision
Fighting age men again and again
Jehadists, taliban all over the dinghies
Paying through the nose
Rape capital of Europe, etc etc

Some of this has an element of truth but then is hugely distorted and twisted so the issue seems bigger than it is
Then rambling on about not being called racist
So I would disagree re saying its been a rational debate
Its been led astray by...misinformation and distortion

sleepwouldbenice · 01/12/2025 15:11

And you've repeated the ideas of mobile phones been given out like candy and them having jobs. Therefore mixing up the legal and illegal immigration issue and adding to the problem

The irony being that many people would probably be on the same page discussing immigration in a one on one, data and example led discussion. But whilst so much division and distortion is around then the chasm and rabbit holes get bigger

Well here has been a chance for people like yourself to bring the 'data led' discussion, and all we've had from you is name calling and accusations of being brainwashed conspiracists. Meanwhile the data that others have presented is dismissed by you as nonsense.

So I'd suggest you really missed an opportunity here. Shame.

I don't have friends who think taking advantage of a benefits system is a good thing to do. I find stealing in this way and being happy to be in the company of thieves that have no qualms about the stealing indicative of a poor ethical standard.

Oh so I'm responsible for other people's decisions 30 years ago? I wish I'd known that at the time; I would have got them to make different decisions. Didn't realise I was so important. I've been going around all these years thinking people can make their own decisions for themselves!

And I was in my 20s, at university, by the way. I kept company with all sorts of people. I don't think that reflects on anything except my age and circumstances, and perhaps my naivety in not knowing what people could be like.

More to the point: you have a problem with those people stealing from another country's benefits system (as do I), but you're completely fine with the thousands of people illegally entering the UK to steal from ours? That doesn't strike you as hypocritical in any way?

There are several incorrect assumptions in your statement which you have presented as fact with no evidence. On a thread about misinformation.
