To think all schools should teach children the old traditional hymns

Just switching between channels and Songs of Praise came on. It was a run down of the most popular school hymns.complete with recorders It brought back many memories and how important communal singing is. It doesn’t matter what your religion is, everyone should know the most popular hymns as a way of uniting society.

Who are 'The Left' OP? What religions to they disregard and follow? Is there any data on the correlation between left wing politics and following particular faiths?

Edited

Also 'are 'the Left' in the room with you now?' is a question in need of an answer.

The problem is the argument put forward by the OP is ill thought out and flawed. On one hand we are supposed to see hymn singing as an important part of the tradition of a 'Christian country' so much so that if we are to enjoy the 'unifying' benefits of community singing, only hymns will do.
On the other we are supposed to see hymns are nothing too deep, just songs 'about religion', the singing of which no more meaningful than any other song.
The OP is unable to address the contradiction in these two positions so is straying off topic presenting other 'information' about religion as though it is factual, despite no evidence.
When there is no meat on the bones of an argument, adopting a condescending tone is sonetimes used in place.

There is no contradiction of these two positions in my mind because I’ve never put forward the second argument have I. You have created a false narrative. On the contrary, hymns often have deep spiritual and societal meaning. So absolutely study the words. You just don’t have to agree with the theology to get value out of them.

So no, I can’t explain the contradiction because it is one created by you, not me. I can explain the false representation of my position by you though. You can’t actually formulate a rational argument against the question so you rewrite the question to discredit it. All a bit pathetic really. If you can’t argue the point maybe step away

Eh??? If you can formulate a question (without posting it twice) I can probably answer it.

@ilovesooty I must confess to enjoying the peace.

Well, I’m back - you could always leave the thread it it’s too stressful - really you and little Sooty are taking practices of 13 year old school girl bullies. It’s absolutely hilarious to watch- your tag team is keeping me chuckling at how grown women (presumably) resort to this sort of behaviour🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

OP is really showing her colours

no one should be forced to sing religious hymns .

if you can’t find uplifting or unifying music for people to sing you are not looking hard enough

And what colours are they? You appear to be making the classic mistake of writing a completely unsubstantiated comment thinking it makes an argument- you really must try harder

I'm quite capable of arguing against your question. The counter arguments are so obvious anyone with half their wits could come up with a reasonal rebuttal. So there is little point framing yourself as my intellectual superior in the discussion. If you are, there has been no evidence of this so far.
I have made several points on the thread, asked you a number of questions, and challenged the incorrect interpretations of aspects of religion on the thread, as have others. You have not once responded to me.
Perhaps you could start with the most basic. What is the justification for coercing people to acts of worship? Because hymns are only meaningful in that they are prayers of praise and devotion to the Christan God.

Staringintothevoid616 · 25/11/2025 09:30

This thread is getting hilarious now, the MN atheist mob getting increasingly aggressive, bullying, rewriting posts in their minds and putting them forward as something I’ve said to make it fit their argument. We only have 3 pages left. I just need “sky fairy “ and “invisible friend” and I’ll have full house

You can teach your children to sing traditionsl hymns at all these unspecified national events that remind you of an unspecified time.

No one minds, just crack on with it.

Let’s just roll back one before I answer your question, why did you misrepresent what I had written? I need to understand that before I answer your question, because if you’re just going to misrepresent that there’s no point. I probably either missed your questions or I had already answered them.

if you can’t argue link to a time and date of each question we can go through them

Please try not to overreact to a simple, polite exchange between two posters.

I have tried to engage with you throughout this post on many levels but really it's hopeless. You have your vote, you have pages of comments mostly disagreeing with you politely for various reasons. What more do you want?

Your hymn singing idea is not going to work because there is no interest in it and no evidence it will provide the outcome you desire.

I've asked you several times what you do to encourage hymn singing in your local community to encourage cohesion and you've not replied.

If you are doing nothing, then I guess even you aren't interested enough to do anything more about it than post on Mumsnet. That isn't going to get the job done.

I don't believe I misrepresented you. However, that will become clearer if you answer my question.
What is your justification for coerced worship?

Ah, classic gaslighting. So you are both effectively engaging in a widely recognised bullying method then telling me I’m over reacting🤣🤣🤣😬.

Now should I engage with someone who is bullying me and gaslighting me about it.

It’s a bit like kids in the playground standing near another kid talking loudly amounts themselves so the bullied child can hear, saying things like “oh she has no friends because of X, why would anyone like her etc etc” then when she calls them out they say she’s over reacting.

I would suggest you seriously review why you can’t recognise what is widely acknowledged as bullying behaviour in yourself.

i missed your question - i help organise the towns carol service and the carol service at school. I also help organise the Remembrance Day parade and organise the hymn sheet printing. - Does that help?

You’ll understand with all the rabid frothing on this thread it’s easy to miss questions.

Well perhaps it's time for you to step away then. You asked your question. An overwhelming majority of people disagree with you and you're probably safe to assume that what you want is never going to happen, and try to reach an acceptance of that with good grace.
At least you can see the funny side though, eh?

itsthetea · 25/11/2025 09:55

The colours that people should be made to sing religious words because of their meaning … and somehow children will absorb the good stuff without absorbing the religious stuff ? You want to brainwash children

it’s the basic start of your original post and you are basically reinforcing that at every moment

try this instead

all things bright and beautiful
all creatures great and small
all things wild and wonderful
we should love them all

each little flower that opens
each little bird that sings
admire the beautiful colours
cherish their tiny wings

See

so easy to have uplifting

Oh, I’m not cross at all - I’m finding it all rather hilarious, people making up stuff, thrashing about, people using bullying and gaslighting tactics ad hominem arguments abound. You’ll see I engaged a lot with the thread and it was difficult to keep track of all the questions asked.

Cab I ask you something, if I was “cross” why would that make me more likely to answer the question? Surely if I was cross, by pre frontal cortex would be working less efficiently and make me less likely to answer the question! Surely that doesn’t make sense to you? Surely what makes more sense is me simply answering questions now it’s been clearly highlighted
