To think all schools should teach children the old traditional hymns

Just switching between channels and Songs of Praise came on. It was a run down of the most popular school hymns.complete with recorders It brought back many memories and how important communal singing is. It doesn’t matter what your religion is, everyone should know the most popular hymns as a way of uniting society.

It was less than half at the last census. I would assume that downward has continued. Probably isn't "the vast majority" or certainly won't be for long - it's not because of the Muslims. It's science and education to blame.

Pesky Age of Enlightenment.

What we need to unite us is to turn the clock back to before the scientific revolution of the 16th Century and none of you humanist socialists snowflakes can persuade me otherwise.

You seem to think the growing acknowledgment of the issues around multiculturalism is a bad thing.

Perhaps you'd have been more transparent if you'd started a thread about that.

angerelle · 23/11/2025 17:33

I sing in a local folk choir (it's been going for over 35 years, apparently) and there is a massive collection of folk songs in this country, don't you think culturally we should be celebrating that as we sing together? Currently we are singing wassail songs and harvest songs and we'll be singing some Christmas songs too.

I love being introduced to these songs that have been lost and found.

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 23/11/2025 17:30

Nonsense.

Only 46% of people in the 2021 Census claim to be Christian, not a majority, never mind a "vast" majority.

Since this has been in decline for a good while it's likely an even lower figure now. This also includes all the people who unthinkingly tick the "Christian" box for no other reason than they were brought up in a loosely Christian tradition, but they don't follow the religion, don't go to church, don't practice Christianity, don't have a particularly deep understanding of it, and in a lot of cases won't even believe in the existence of Gods.

The UK is emphatically not a "Christian Country".

But Church of England attendance has grown for the 4th year running!!!

The vast majority actually are Christian though!

We are a Christian country.

The very fact that we don't sing our hymns in case it offends Muslims is actually bonkers to me.

If we are a Christian country, why do so very few people go to church?

OP is going to love me saying this.......but the poster to whom you are replying has 88 in her user name. HH. Coffeeandbooks88

Another random, meaningless coincidence of course.

Two fat ladies????

Are you?

We just need to sing more hymns and the country will be united.

Just like in the year?????

But that wasn’t the point I wanted answering - I was simply answering a point made by a poster in this thread. Is that the question you wanted me to ask because you have some ready made sound bites for it?

It's entirely possible this is down to an influx of Christian people who attend church far more regularly than the indigenous locals. It's in no way inconsistent with a wider decline in overall religiosity.

They haven't even recovered from the COVID drop. A 1% a year increase since 2020 is a rubbish metric. It's still trending down.

Oh are we back to Angel Numbers??? What fun!!!

I was thinking more Bingo, although prob do need to do a pre Christmas diet come to think of it. There’s definitely just one of me😀

I’m not a Christian, what beliefs are you thinking I have?

If you are not a christian then get your hands off OUR hymns!

I have an opposition to anything that I think is destructive to society.

Yet you are pro religion? Bizarre

Edited

Now now, that’s not a very Christian attitude is it???? Luckily most of them are quite old so lost their copyright some time ago.

How do you square your views with Paul’s

I don’t think Religion is destructive to society - so not “bizarre” at all. The fact most societies have a “Religion” would suggest it’s fairly fundamental. Usually it’s only an issue if the vast majority don’t following it on some level.

God made them, high or lowly,

What a great message to give our children.

Did you and the poster several pages back who made this exact post copy it from the same little handbook of “Things to write about religion that you will think make you sound clever but everyone knows is just a copy and paste job”

I think we should make a list of all the most famous British bands of the last 50 years and then teach their songs. You could argue the cultural impact is greater than any hymn.

I’d much rather my kids were learning Beatles songs like Let it be than a load of meaningless religious clap trap. And I was brought up going to Sunday school learning all these hymns!

You started a thread where it became apparent that you were more concerned about multiculturism than the benefits of communal singing.

History is all a matter of selection though surely, if we included everything we would never get anywhere would we ???

I agree with the OP. I wish the school had taught the children the proper church hymns. It was a CofE school,
