What are your thoughts on Cynthia Erico’s and Ariana Grande’s behaviour?

Obviously this is just light hearted gossip. They’re doing no harm.

But I absolutely fascinated by Ariana’s and Cynthia’s odd behaviour during the press tour for Wicked. They seem extremely close with one another. But I hate to say it comes across very contrived.

Ariana looks and acts like a fragile doll these days. In stark contrast to her previous pop star persona. And Cynthia has seemingly decided to play the role of her protector. It’s all very strange.

They have both lost a lot of weight. But what on Earth has happened to these two during filming?

This thread won’t be for everyone. But some of like to discuss the psychological aspects of behaviour. It’s obviously pure speculation

I find it all quite odd and slightly uncomfortable as they seem quite reliant on each other in a way I don’t think it’s entirely ‘normal’ for two adults to be. My DDs, who are the films target market, find it uncomfortable to watch and one of them described their weight as ‘anorexic’ which rings true as someone who has battled a food disorder.

I haven’t watched the video you linked. But I think whatever is going on, it’s very sad and very worrying.

It may, of course, be nothing and all for the cameras but the way they act together combined with their weight and overall demeanour is not normal for two adults and strays into the territory of them being bad role models.

YABU, there is already a current long thread about this, do we really need another one criticising women.

Arianna Grande is clearly very unwell and under weight she should be getting medical help not going on press tours

Discussion and criticism are two separate things. I’m genuinely interested in their dynamic.

I think that Cynthia Erivo comes across as quite hippy dippy intense and has attached to Ariana Grande for some reason - romantic attraction, caregiving impulse or cynical career building - in a way that is beyond normal friendship. Ariana seems nonplussed by some of her behaviour but she's going along with it, I would guess because she's a weaker personality being dominated by a stronger one. The intense weight loss is scary, and Michelle Yeoh has also lost a lot of weight during filming. There is some competitive skinniness going on and some weird codependent folie a deux stuff. Now the filming and promotion is nearly over I expect they will stop spending so much time together and it will get less intense.

They both look manifestly ill. This isn’t about “judging other women for their choices” it is stating fact and it’s a horrendous example to put in front of their female target audience

whether all the gushing is genuine or a role they’ve decided to play to kill the inevitable stoking of rivalry between 2 female leads, I have no idea. It is odd. You can be positive about your co star without clinging to them.

They both seem completely normal women before wicked. There is obviously an eating disorder involved, Im not sure if their dynamic is a weird marketing ploy for Wicked or if its real but it makes difficult viewing

They are both weird as fuck, there is something very strange going on with them and Ariana just looks straight bloody affected now.

I can't work out if they are weirdly codependent, or if it's all an act. Either way it's odd and OTT.

I've been best friends with my best friend for over 35 years. We know what the other is thinking a lot of the time and we aren't that intense!

It has hugely put me off the whole thing!

I have no interest in Wicked apart from once seeing the stage version which I have now thankfully erased from my mind. However a friend at work said Cynthia and Ariana were doing the press conferences and interviews ‘in character’. Could that be a reason for their apparently odd behaviour?

The necklace thing was just odd and offensive when Ariana was trying to speak to the reporter. Her fragility is quite ridiculous too.

I'm not sure about their relationship. I'm a lesbian, and my main issue with it, is that it feels a bit like queer baiting. For those who don't know, that's a term to describe a lot of hinting at an LGBT+ relationship to appeal to a queer audience and generate fans (a lot of people really ship these two), without actually being LGBT 🤷

Edit: I also think people need to remember Ariana Grande has faced a significant trauma that most people will thankfully never ever experience. She is also in a unique position, in that people came to see her at Manchester and she brought everyone together in that arena. Even other survivors of Manchester can't relate to her experience in that way. There will probably always be times she's unwell, as she likely has significant PTSD.

Who is that guy Sloan? He's filtered his face so much looks like he's wearing a mask!

I should imagine Ariana Grande has a lot of trauma from a terrorist attack happening at one of her concerts.

There’s a clip of Ariana having her hand moved sort of vigorously in an interview and Cynthia acts very strangely by acting all protective and acting as if her wrist was about to break. I think she even snuggles the hand.

I think it’s an act tbh. They are obviously close but have realised that acting this way gets them a lot of attention and press. The necklace thing in particular was inappropriate (especially as there was nothing wrong with it!) and Cynthia would have known that, she’s not stupid or socially inept.

I think a lot of it is an act and they’re having a laugh. Interesting how PP said she’s the weaker of the pair- I don’t think she is. If you listen to previous interviews she’s a clever woman.

I don’t think any speculation about weight is helpful. People diagnosing over the internet is not going to change anything and will almost certainly add to any psychological burden.
