What are your thoughts on Cynthia Erico’s and Ariana Grande’s behaviour?

Obviously this is just light hearted gossip. They’re doing no harm.

But I absolutely fascinated by Ariana’s and Cynthia’s odd behaviour during the press tour for Wicked. They seem extremely close with one another. But I hate to say it comes across very contrived.

Ariana looks and acts like a fragile doll these days. In stark contrast to her previous pop star persona. And Cynthia has seemingly decided to play the role of her protector. It’s all very strange.

They have both lost a lot of weight. But what on Earth has happened to these two during filming?

This thread won’t be for everyone. But some of like to discuss the psychological aspects of behaviour. It’s obviously pure speculation

Another thst thinks Ariana has gone through more than most people ever will. Hope she has some good people in her camp that are looking out for her.

Disclaimer: I am white.

I wonder if there's a racist element to all this. The "fierce, strong black woman" trope, combined with Ariana's perceived white weakness.

I wonder if people would be talking about this so much if Cynthia were also white, or if they were both black.

Edited

I believe that yes, people would also be talking about it if they were both white, black or men. The focus is the behaviour, nothing else. As an example, there have been plenty of conversations (not in mumsnet) over the years about the singer from the arctic monkeys and another musician he plays with in their other band. Both straight but display a weird co dependent behaviour in interviews and gigs, sometimes being protective, sometimes being somehow sexual.

Slothisavirtue · 23/11/2025 09:22

I was thinking back to when I was anorexic (after a trauma) and actually I remember people becoming very over protective of me. All sorts of unexpected people too.
Nothing to do with race, or being performative, or Hollywood. Just a human instinct I guess.

Lunalara · 23/11/2025 09:31

I am concerned about their health as they look like they are in a bad place. Anorexia is not only tough on the body, but very difficult to escape from without constant support. I saw what happened to poor Eugenia on YouTube, and hope so much that they don’t go down a similar path. Having said that, as long as Wicked for good is being heavily advertised, I will put their attitude towards each other down to the film. They will be told to act certain ways for the image of the film.

They’re 32 and 38, which in my mind is a little old for this to be dismissed as “silly young people.”

Must say that surprised me.

Thought maybe they would grow out of performative appearances.

Still think they're silly.

Fuck me. The amount of nasty comments in this is shocking.

No one know what it's like to live in someone else's shoes

Mental health can hit at any time. It's doesn't matter that the event was 8 years ago.

Don't make nasty comments unless you have lived it yourself or have a very close relative or friend that's lived it. And I mean really. Not just the neighbour 5 doors down who you chat to once in a while.

It's really really hard both for the person and the supporters. MH is judged. If she had an accident and was unable to walk or lost a limb she wouldn't get this kind of judgement.

All of you just stop! Think about it!

Right. None of the comments are nasty, they are observations and discussion around the actual thread title. Ariana Grande is unlikely to read Mumsnet. the suggestion we're not allowed to talk about famous people who are behaving strangely is ridiculous

I am actually a big Ariana fan. I have seen her in concert post-manchester bombing when we all had to use see through bags. I personally am not convinced her PTSD is the cause of this, especially considering it seems to be affecting all the other women in the cast too. If she is so unwell she should be taken off of the press tour. She'll have access to the best support money can buy. Don't be so dramatic over strangers talking about celebrities.

SuzyCoo · 22/11/2025 15:55

You are being totally reasonable. The relationship is odd.

On another note I am really worried about Ariana. The world watched as Karen Carpenter faded herself away and denied any issues. I don't think that should ever happen again. Who is protecting/helping her? Can't be Cynthia because she too has entered skeletal state.

Karen Carpenter did actually recover from her anorexia, then died of the heart weakness it had caused, aged 33, a year older than AG is now. Tragic.

Fellontheground · 22/11/2025 17:35

That Cynthia one is just weird. She gives me the absolute creeps. No idea what her actual talent is. The seems to have come from nowhere. Ariana Grande not a whole lot better but seems ill and vulnerable.

You’ve no idea what her talent is??? Have you actually heard her sing or seen her act?

She already had a Tony, Emmy and Grammy long before Wicked as well as multiple other nominations.

I didn't know that. How awful.

knitnerd90 · 24/11/2025 08:00

Ariana was previously accused of cultural appropriation re: black culture.

I think it's largely an act but the entire cast looks like they banned craft services from the set. It's not just one of them. Really awful, and any attempt at commenting, even though it's clearly larger than just one person, gets you accused of body shaming.

I was today years old when I learned Erivo was almost 40. I pegged her for a lot younger!

Folie à deux

id love to know the psychology of Ariana changing her talking voice and persona to sound more child like and fragile.

I know she’s been through a lot but she sounded normal and confident even in interviews several years after the attacks. I just don’t buy that her new image is 100% due to that.

cheated with a married man whose wife had very very recently given birth. Even bet them I believe.

His wife sounds awesome. She is a clinical psychologist and they were childhood sweethearts. Divorced now.

Why do stars always insist that no affair happened before the relationship breakups? Are they lying or in denial? In Grande’s case we know it was an affair because gossip was leaked from the set.

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 25/11/2025 07:48

Perhaps Ariana’s new persona is to deflect criticism for her affair. Certainly the talk I’ve heard has been all about her fragility and concern for her, rather than about her relationship with a married man.

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 25/11/2025 07:49

It’s weird behaviour either way.

KilliMonjaro · 25/11/2025 08:20

They are like a parody of themselves at this point.

Thedevilhasfinallycaughtupwithhim · 25/11/2025 08:23

They both have mental health issues which have fed off each other because of the amount of time they spend together. They’re mutually fuelling each other’s mental decline.

Ladamesansmerci · 22/11/2025 12:20

Ariana in particular looks unwell.

I'm not sure about their relationship. I'm a lesbian, and my main issue with it, is that it feels a bit like queer baiting. For those who don't know, that's a term to describe a lot of hinting at an LGBT+ relationship to appeal to a queer audience and generate fans (a lot of people really ship these two), without actually being LGBT 🤷

Edit: I also think people need to remember Ariana Grande has faced a significant trauma that most people will thankfully never ever experience. She is also in a unique position, in that people came to see her at Manchester and she brought everyone together in that arena. Even other survivors of Manchester can't relate to her experience in that way. There will probably always be times she's unwell, as she likely has significant PTSD.

Edited

This exact thought occurred to me the other day after I’d watched another clip of A & C being strange and looking so unwell. I was wondering what could have happened to Ariana to trigger this and I’d completely overlooked the Manchester attack. The guilt and trauma that she must live with following that (even though it’s not her fault). I do feel very sad for her.

When did we start blaming women for cheating men?

And you ‘know’ from gossip, do you? Do you believe all gossip?

He may have told her they were separated.

ladyofshertonabbas · 25/11/2025 09:23

Their interactions make me uncomfortable and I don't know why. It might be that they both look so skinny. it's not fun flirtiness, it's something else.

OW get absolutely torn apart on here, as does anyone who says it's entirely on the married person to keep their own vows. Sometimes you get a quick line about the man being a dick to get that out of the way, but then it's paragraphs and paragraphs about the OW. Then you get accused of being an OW yourself because apparently that's the only way you might decide a man is responsible for himself.

Yes, it goes back to the old sexist tropes of 'men just can't help themselves'. So depressing.
