To think being a woman costs more?

DH and I have been having a debate on discretionary spending. AIBU to think being a woman is more expensive?

Bikini waxes, hairdressers, tights, lingerie, taxis after dark…

Umm, because I don’t have a cock and balls? Why would I buy underwear with a baggy bit at the front? There’s a reason they’re designed differently!

Razors not underwear lol

I buy my socks from M&S and they always end up with holes. I walk normally, wear normal shoes and never wear socks when I’m at home. Not sure how people make them last??

John Lewis socks are much better. Can pick them up in waitrose

OK but it is entirely relevant

Because women don't, as a whole unit or by law, HAVE to use taxis and men don't, as a whole or by law, not have to use taxis

So it's not a specific cost to either sex but one made by each individual based on their own feelings of risk assessment and risk avoidance because gender doesn't protect you at night

Okay, have a nice evening x

Brendathebear · 19/11/2025 20:34

Why do you feel you need to do these things OP? If YOU want to do them - then go ahead. They arent necessities.

I'm saddened to hear that you feel that you would be looked over for work promotion etc without looking a certain way. I have worked in a senior role for years - working with many very formidable driven women. I sat with 7 other women today in a conference. There are plenty of men in my industry, but for some reason it was just women on my table today. Only 2 of us had make up on. I was one of them but I was only wearing mascara, so not sure if that counts.

Im not sure if any them have regular bikini waxes.....

I'm smart and stylish but I dont do any of those things. I personally dislike fake or painted nails (this is a left over from a clinical background). My hair isnt dyed and a bit of immac sorts out a bikini line if Im wearing a bikini on holiday.

Come to think of it, we had a senior person speaking at the conference today, she was full grey hair (although smart) and no make up too.

I would never ever wear makeup/dye my hair on the say so of a man - even one I was married to. Why the fuck would I? I wouldnt ask a man to shave his testicles for my preference...! WTF!

But even a fairly fuss free woman needs:
Day to day bras
A sports bra
Probably some kind of multiway bra to wear with vest tops, racerbacks, strapless etc - if only to get married in!
Normal pants
Either seam free or thong to wear under leggings/tight clothing
Tights
Socks

Men - a 10 pack of boxers

I am very fuss free.
3 x plain bra
1 x sports bra
Multipack of plain pants
Multipack of socks

My husband also has multipack pants and multipack socks.

The only difference is bras and I buy them in bulk. When one lot dies I buy 3 identical from M&S. Just bought 3 at £18 each which will.probably last a couple of years so less than £30 a year on bras.

I don't have to buy ties.

You’re misreading me completely, I’m literally trying to be nice and say night. I don’t feel superior to you or anyone x

I am fairly low maintenance I think but I get through about 4 times the amount of (tesco own brand) shampoo and conditioner that dh does because I have a lot more hair. Also I spend about £30 a month on period stuff. My bras are mostly all ancient though. I've got one matching set from asda and the rest are maternity bras from mother care. I stopped breastfeeding over 9 years ago and mother care closed quite a while ago too.

But according to posters on this thread, you should just cut your hair short, yourself, and you'd save? And buy a moon cup. Once off small cost and you're set for life....

Yes of course I do. But they’re fairly standard and not “fun money” I don’t think.

Definitely not fun money. DH and I both profit from it, so it comes out of our joint account.

Ouch have tampons and sanitary towels jumped up in price lots then? Been a few years since needed them. Used to manage on a couple of boxes of superdrug tampons at about 99p a pack

Sartre · 19/11/2025 21:41

Agreed. Women don’t need any of it but I’d argue most of us pay for at least one or two of those things. We can’t get out of sanitary protection so that’s a cost men don’t have to consider. Bras for sure, even running bras which again men don’t have to consider. Make up, hairdressers, nails, waxing etc are of course a choice but most women do some of this to feel good.

Sartre · 19/11/2025 21:42

Also should have said the hairdressers is like £30 minimum for a cut as well whereas men can go to the barbers and pay a tenner.

BriefEncountersOfTheThirdKind · 19/11/2025 21:49

I paid £17 for a quick trim at the hairdresser the other day
It used to be a £5 from the woman I knew well and who would give me a quick tidy up

Just a cut? Can get a cut and blow dry for less than that here. Or a dry cut for a tenner

Ironically DS gets charged £17 @at the barber's

Strawberrypicnic · 19/11/2025 22:34

Good quality bras are sooo expensive! Especially if you're not a commonly stocked size

No, but I bleed a lot so I go through a lot of them. I also use period pants which are really expensive and wear out after 5 years or so.

Go to the GP and get yourself on the pill to reduce the bleeding.

Just looked up period pants. Seen M&S have packs of 3 heavy absorbency for £16 which isn't really expensive especially if last a whlle

Id be seeing the doctor though with such heavy periods they take £30 month of sanitary wara

I will concede that how heavily those expectations are pushed in a work environment varies between industries. But still (and I’m not aiming this at you, just musing) if enough women pushed back, would that change? Like cabin crew as someone mentioned earlier - women pointing out how silly the high heels and makeup rules were led to a lot of airlines dropping those requirements and introducing trouser uniforms for women.

Personally I really don’t care how someone wants to look. If you (again, collective, not you personally) feel better and more yourself looking traditionally feminine and everything that entails with hair, nails and makeup, crack on. I certainly don’t think that’s anything to sneer at or inferior to non-conforming women. I think it’s always worth questioning though how and why our tastes and opinions form, and questioning whether all societal expectations are worth following or paying any attention to. And if you come to the conclusion that actually you don’t like having gel nails/getting Botox/scrubbing the house from top to bottom every time the MIL visits etc, just stop.

Yes I think it would change if we all pushed back. I wish I was one of the women that feels able to! I’m not, hopefully one day I will be.

Back21970 · 20/11/2025 21:46

I kind of agree, however do think men are still generally still expected to pick up the tab when first dating and provide more £££ to the household if kids are involved.

Not always though in these days of equality (I’m adding this before I get flamed 😀)

And I suppose unless they want facial hair they have to shave every day.

Statistically young men are more likely to be physically assaulted too late at night so could argue they should also be getting taxis.

Woman want to, and are conditioned, to spend more though on grooming I reckon - I’ve always been happy to do it and if it was a struggle it’s something I could easily cut back on.
