‘Just the meat for me please’ Sunday Lunch issue ’

Mondaytuesdayhappydays · 05/11/2025 13:47

SIS and BIL coming for Sunday Lunch, bringing DN and her BF- recently engaged.
Got a little gift for them and card etc, my parents were coming any way so invited Sunday for food as makes sense.

SIS has just WhatsApped to say jokingly that the BF -mega gym bunny - ‘doesn’t do potatoes and trimmings- but don’t worry he’ll just pile his plate high with meat’
Im doing a couple chickens and a gammon between us all so plenty for everyone alongside stuffing, veg, Yorkies , gravey, cauliflower cheese etc but definitely not for a huge piled up plate of just meat!

I replied lightheartedly to SIS to this effect and she’s not a happy camper at all.
Just texted to say wants him to feel welcome so will bring him a couple of raw pork chops or similar to fry - I’ve said bring them cooked and sliced already in a Tupperware as I won’t be frying chops with all the carnage of the roast going on and my parents milling about under my feet ‘helping’

Shes voice noting at the moment can see the symbol
honestly am I just old or a shit hostess or is this how guests who barely know their hosts I might add expect to be catered for ???

I mean veggie/vegan all power to you
but a plate piled up of meat for lunch seems a bit full on to me ??

I’d like to hazard a bet that when there’s no double portion of meat for him alone, he’ll be right in about those spuds and trimmings! back for pudd too. Tell him to track that on his App CF

CF

This is really rude and the GF and SIL are all excusing it.

Eat normally when a guest. Don’t eat the cauli cheese if not interested but don’t expect a host to accommodate a very expensive bulk protein diet for one meal.

But that's the issue with someone who is orthorexic. They don't/can't eat normally, no matter what the circs. It's the lack of flexibility that makes them orthorexic. "Cue memories of my exH coming to my parents' for Christmas, declaring that he would only eat the vegetables but not to do anything special for him."

pottylolly · 06/11/2025 14:43

Going to someone else’s house on and piling your plate high with the most expensive item on the menu is rude. Just reiterate to your sister that she’s to bring cooked meat for him or they can all stay at home.

Re bowel cancer and meat
The research is done on total meat consumption. It is not nuanced at all.
Something like 48% of meat in the US is ultra processed - so in burgers, fast food, preserved meats etc
This is very different from unprocessed meat.

Research I believe is ongoing

My bowels are fine thanks as I eat so much veg

Bowel cancer rates are increasing the highest amongst vegetarians in India (who often eat all their meals cooked from scratch 5-10 portions of veg per day) as they’re least likely to exercise

Is that adjusted to allow for the fact that India has a higher number of vegetarians?

I dated a body builder 30 odd years ok ( was raw eggs in a blender back then and 20 steak mince patties cooked in butter.

After DTD he would jump straight up and measure his thighs and biceps 💪 as were ‘ pumped’ up and bigger
He asked me to take a Polaroid snap once, flexing- which was my limit
toe curling

If the boyfriend starts boring on about the gym, please please please share this anecdote over the dinner table.

....and are maybe eating more Western convenience foods than they traditionally did?

The majority of Indians are not vegetarians, walk a lot so the overall rate is low, and are under 40. This is local data coming from specific vegetarian populations with higher life expectancies that previously didn’t see bowel cancer.

dinochum · 06/11/2025 16:02

She’s literally dating a “Meat Head” 🤣
go to costco, buy a cooked rotisserie chicken (it’s like £4.50 or something). It comes in a bag.
slap a gift bow on it and eh voilla!

whistlesandbells · 06/11/2025 16:18

Two chicken and a gammon for 8 people, right? Isn’t that enough?
Yes you want someone to feel welcome but grabbing a pile of meat like this is entitled and self-involved.

WithIcePlease · 06/11/2025 16:18

I would think that the border as to what is obsessive and what is just a preference is what life situations are impacted.

I know of people who say 'I'm a bit ocd' or similar. I have met true sufferers form OCD who have admitted that they would be unable to leave their home in a hurry with their sick child if there was an incomplete compulsion eg they had not completed their shower ritual, had unprepared chicken on the worktop.

Would I literally go without food if there wasn't an option (e.g a day out at a theme park, a remote cafe on a hike)? No
Do my preferences trump basic
politeness? No

A couple of weeks ago I went to a private hospitality event. I ate all 4 courses including a pudding. It would have been rude not to with the amount the host had paid and very obvious in the small private dining area.

Not everything someone is very interested in is an obsession. One relative follows the Ukrainian war for literally hours each day and is on some sort of WhatsApp group for more detailed analysis. It's just an interest. The same amount of time watching tv and reading about slebs wouldn't get any judgment.

Playing on gaming consoles can lead to some missing meals. That's more concerning in my opinion.

MeridianB · 06/11/2025 16:34

It will be interesting to find out if he is demanding or whether this was being driven by your sister. But I’m guessing that she has eaten with him several times and so this must come from somewhere.

Whether he’s asked for a pile of meat or she’s offered is key. But her making the expectation on his behalf to a different host is rude.

JennyForeigner · 06/11/2025 18:55

Is your sister engaged to Henry VIII?

Panseypotter · 06/11/2025 19:36

Buy him a tin of Chum, he'd be barking to come again.

HevenlyMeS · 06/11/2025 20:20

Greetings original commenter 🤗
I've only just seen your comment & most surely don't feel you're being unreasonable to any degree, God Bless You
Immediately clicked on You're Not Being Unreasonable & it seems most believe the same 🥳
You've already got your work cut out for you & I feel your niece's bf should bring his own meat, ready to eat, not cause friction between you & your dear sister
Much love to you&yours & wishing you all the utmost best 💚

HevenlyMeS · 06/11/2025 20:27

😂Bless you & can just imagine his face /their faces 😆

PlumpHobbit · 06/11/2025 20:29

You just know hes hoping someone will ask about it, so he has the excuse to bang on about his training schedule and muscles etc

Have followed thread as looking forward to OP's update!

Am I the only one who has spent most of this thread reminded of the hot mailman on the Good Place? Bit niche maybe? Poor DN!

blacksax · 06/11/2025 20:51

A mega gym bunny should be into healthy eating, so he should be piling his plate high with veg.

I'd love to see your reference for that 'fact'. Meanwhile:

A major factor influencing colorectal cancer in India is diet. The traditional Indian diet, high in refined carbohydrates, sugar, and low in fiber, has changed significantly over the years. The increasing consumption of processed and red meats, along with fast food, is also contributing to the rise in cancer cases. These dietary habits increase inflammation in the gut, making it more susceptible to cancerous changes.
