‘Just the meat for me please’ Sunday Lunch issue ’

SIS and BIL coming for Sunday Lunch, bringing DN and her BF- recently engaged.
Got a little gift for them and card etc, my parents were coming any way so invited Sunday for food as makes sense.

SIS has just WhatsApped to say jokingly that the BF -mega gym bunny - ‘doesn’t do potatoes and trimmings- but don’t worry he’ll just pile his plate high with meat’
Im doing a couple chickens and a gammon between us all so plenty for everyone alongside stuffing, veg, Yorkies , gravey, cauliflower cheese etc but definitely not for a huge piled up plate of just meat!

I replied lightheartedly to SIS to this effect and she’s not a happy camper at all.
Just texted to say wants him to feel welcome so will bring him a couple of raw pork chops or similar to fry - I’ve said bring them cooked and sliced already in a Tupperware as I won’t be frying chops with all the carnage of the roast going on and my parents milling about under my feet ‘helping’

Shes voice noting at the moment can see the symbol
honestly am I just old or a shit hostess or is this how guests who barely know their hosts I might add expect to be catered for ???

I mean veggie/vegan all power to you
but a plate piled up of meat for lunch seems a bit full on to me ??

Oh ffs just tell them not to bother coming. Who can be arsed with this level of entitlement. She is making him sound like a toddler who is going to have a meltdown if he doesn't get the exact food he wants. If i was eating dinner at someone's and had a restrictive diet i would just eat before i went. I wouldn't start dictating to the hosts.

Why do I feel this post about the entitled ravenous meat eating gym bunny coming to lunch, is going to live on in the memories of MN users like the screamer of the sistene chapel😄

I think I get far too invested in these stories 🤦‍♀️🤣

Edited

I’m just worried now I’m
going to let you all down on Sunday when matey comes and eats a fat portion of both the meat and the spinach/ricotta lasagne - loads of garlic bread-passes on the salads and snaffles two portions of my mums life threatening, heart attack inducing treacle tart and clotted cream lol

Im going to have to lie aren’t I ??
and say he ate 15 advocados while injecting homemade mayo !!!

Are you going to tell him, your niece or your sister of the menu change in advance?

DH asked me that earlier
I don’t think so, no
the meat thing only came up as I said I was doing a roast
think I will just raw dog the new plan, x
our man will survive I’m sure.
DD bringing couple of nice salads she and the kids like too - a bean and feta one and a cous cous jobby so I’m sure all will be well x

You’ve messaged your niece expressly to say you’ll have extra meat for her man (which she certainly didn’t say don’t do, so I’m not as sure as others that it’s all in your sisters head. And now you just have cannelloni? Message your sister and say you’ll have to bring some meat after all, dps at work, and dd coming with the kids.

Fair point I suppose , then I guess he’s prepped and can bring a packed lunch if need be
fair play x

Awwww no, no pressure. Walking this journey with you has been very entertaining no matter how it turns out 😉.

In all honesty, when D day comes, I imagine he will be very normal and not scoffing ALL the meat or flexing his over developed biceps at the table while family get phones out to take pics.
Bet he just arrives, is polite, takes an extra slice of meat and goes home none the wiser of the whole MN community tracking his every bite.

🤜🤛

People who are on a cut typically don’t eat veg that’s been smothered in butter/honey etc as typical with a nice roast.

Who smothers their vegetables in butter or honey?

magiciansgirlonce · 08/11/2025 00:39

Only meat ? Not too keen on his tastes?!

SunnyOchreNewt · 08/11/2025 18:58

Sounds like he is on a ketogenic diet, in which case a potato or yorkshire pudding would throw him right off! And he probably doesn't eat carrots, parsnips, onions etc. either. He might have a bit of the cauliflower cheese unless you've made it with milk and flour.
He might appreciate some spinach or lightly steamed cabbage on the side.

If he's following a keto diet or low carb diet I fully understand his dilemma as eating carbs can knock you out of keto and it can be difficult to regain or at least take a day or two to get back on target. Just do a few bits of chicken breast and I'm sure he'll appreciate it.

A couscous jobby would really be the talk of all at a Scottish family meal! Hope it goes well OP, be sure to let us know!

I also think it depends what you said when you “light heartedly” replied. Many people nowadays are Keto but strange if he’s having just meat only. That’s the expensive part!

ArtTheClownIsNotAMime · 08/11/2025 19:54

I've been on your side so far but it's a dick move to drastically change the menu and not tell guests who are on a special diet.

I cant understand how people can be so rude, even if they are family. I'd always try to accomodate SDR but expecting to be served a different meal is ridiculous. I wouldn't be inviting them back.

HevenlyMeS · 08/11/2025 20:12

Yes I completely comprehend as we don't know the reasons behind their diet restrictions
I presumed she was joking when she commented, the meal was now going to be lasagne 😢🙏Which is notoriously known for being high in carbohydrates, the very thing he's trying to avoid 🙏

Emlouhar · 08/11/2025 20:30

I have a load of annoying food intolerances and a couple of allergies. I rarely accept meal invitation offers because I know how difficult it is for some to get right, plus don't fancy having to tell everyone the ins and outs of my health and why I can't have stuff.

I have found over the years I get a lot of negative and rude comments from people who don't really understand or know why, including my MIL.
I don't feel I should have to go into detail of terrible cramps, explosive diarrhea, sitting in the loo for hours on end, vomiting, excessive bloating, excessive farting, rashes, hives or my tongue/face/lips swelling up.

If I do get talked into a meal at someone's I will often just apologise in advance and make it clear what I can and can't have. So if someone I voted me for Sunday dinner, I too would have to just have the meat and I could probably have non root vegetables but can't be cooked or seasoned with pepper or butter. Can't have cauliflower cheese, can't have stuffing, can't have Yorkshire puds, can't have potato, can't have anything mashed down as it's often with cream/milk/butter which I can't have.
I can't have egg, pasta, rice, potato, black pepper, dairy, cranberry, kiwi, cashew nuts, noodles root veg amongst over stuff.

I don't always tell everyone why, I just say I don't eat stuff. Maybe it's something along those lines, everyone assumed I'm doing some form of keto and do it to lose weight - I'm doing it mostly so I don't live in discomfort and die early tho.

HevenlyMeS · 08/11/2025 20:42

God Bless You
Completely empathise - I shouldn't have wheat, soy (&most likely dairy) but just the 1st 2 confirmed
& I understand, only too well, how rude & uncompassionate some can be even when you do explain, you suffer from allergies - One person, in particular, really stands out in my mind - Shortly after my Beloved Mum passed, my father dated this school teacher & the 1st (&only time), I met her, she scolded me for making life difficult for others, because I refused to eat their bread!
Never forgotten her audacity 💚
