Would you have told this woman that half her bum was hanging out?

DW and I were at a train station on Saturday which was full of people dressed up for Halloween. A bit ahead of us were two women whose costumes incorporated extremely short skirts. The woman on the left had got her skirt just long enough to cover everything but the woman on the right had the lower half of her bum showing.

DW wanted to say something to her, as she was worried she might not be aware and would appreciate being told. I said I didn't think this was a good idea, as she might have deliberately worn her skirt that short and therefore might react badly to someone bringing it up like it's a bad thing.

We ended up just carrying on to our train and not saying anything. Was I in the wrong to persuade DW not to get involved?

YABU - you should have said something to the woman

YANBU - you were right not to get involved

YABU, I would have told her.

You were right not to get involved.

nomas · 04/11/2025 14:37

Are you male? It would have been better coming from your DW.

angelos02 · 04/11/2025 14:38

I'm sure she knew - it's chilly enough for her to have felt the draught!

nomas · 04/11/2025 14:38

I like wearing bodies but hate buttoning them. I appreciate it when another woman warns me when my body tails are hanging out.

LaserPumpkin · 04/11/2025 14:39

I wouldn’t have said anything unless it was an obvious wardrobe malfunction - skirt tucked into knickers kind of thing

Onlyinthrees · 04/11/2025 14:40

In that situation, I wouldn’t have said anything. If it wasn’t deliberate, her friend would notice and tell her soon enough anyway.

BadgernTheGarden · 04/11/2025 14:41

If she was with a friend I'm sure the friend would have told her if it wasn't deliberate.

MyAcornWood · 04/11/2025 14:41

She 100% already knew and had chosen the costume deliberately to show off her arse. Up to her I guess!

This.

I would have assumed her friends would have told her anyway. Sounds like she picked a really short skirt.

BadgernTheGarden · 04/11/2025 14:42

At that point there was nothing she could do about it anyway, I doubt she had another costume hidden about her person.

Same

I saw a lot of this in Liverpool a few weeks ago on a Saturday night. I think it's just the fashion .

didntlikeanyofthesuggestions · 04/11/2025 14:43

If your wife thought it was worth mentioning then why did you stop her? The thought of a man trying to stop a woman telling another woman about a wardrobe malfunction makes me very uneasy. I've had someone tell me similar and I've been very grateful to them.

x2boys · 04/11/2025 14:43

I wouldn't have said anything
I saw a women in Morrisons a few months ago she was wearing an extremely short t shirt dress and was carrying something cumbersome ( can't remember what) and kept bending over to pick stuff I dont think she was wearing underwear 🙈
I was really trying not to look but she was right in front of me.

Calliopespa · 04/11/2025 14:43

Lots of wardrobe malfunctions I would comment on, but unfortunately that short skirt (if you can call it a skirt) is in fashion at the moment so its as well you didn't I think.

I think it was intentional.

No, we are both women.

Blanketfull · 04/11/2025 14:44

If it was just that the skirt was very short, rather than had got tucked up, I'd assume she did it deliberately.

Calliopespa · 04/11/2025 14:45

A few years ago the re was quite a fashion for wearing sheer kaftan type things with visible pants and bra under it.

I know someone who got an earful for pointing out that you could see through it. She said she thought they might not have realised it was sheer in the sunshine.

I'm not a man.

It depends whether it looked intentional or not. I've told a few rucksack carrying woman that the bag had caused her skirt to ride up and show her bum, because clearly that isn't a look they're going for. However some skirts are meant to be as short as the one you describe and costumes often provide an opportunity for women to be a bit more out there in what they decide to wear, so there's every chance she knew.

HumoursofBandon · 04/11/2025 14:47

By the sound of it, she was just wearing a really short skirt that showed the bottom part of her buttocks. I was in the city centre (university city) at Halloween, and there were certainly quite a number of women who were wearing variations on 'sexy zombie/devil' costumes which showed a lot of lower buttock. It seemed to be deliberate because the rest of the costume was pretty vestigial as well, and because in a couple of cases, they were wearing body paint all over, including said buttocks, so had clearly foreseen their visibility.

And yes, have definitely told women whose skirts have been made to ride up by a rucksack or bag, when it's clearly unintentional.

Agree. She totally knew.

BauhausOfEliott · 04/11/2025 14:50

Of course she knew her bum was showing. It was an ultra-short 'sexy' Halloween costume, she's capable of looking in a mirror, and she was with friends who would absolutely have told her had it not been deliberate.

Visible bum cheeks showing under a skirt is 'a thing' at the moment.

So yes, you were right not to say anything.
