Someone who’s passionate, young and willing to break the rules in politics, all while caring about his city and the people in it. I wish we had someone like that here.

Does he have the power to do that or does Albany?

Yeah he does. NYC already levies a city income tax (3.8% or so) - his proposal is to increase the rate for the highest earners.

That's a very loose translation from the original. The World Zionist Organisation and Jerusalem programme refer to a 'Jewish nation' as 'Eretz Yisrael' that's a biblical term and not confined to the borders of the current modern state of Israel.

What's 'the original'? Zionism or the place of Israel at the heart of Judaism, goes back a long way. The World Zionist Organisation is a more modern political organisation with a political definition of its own. It doesn't have the authority to delineate a universal definition of zionism. That's a bit like the Labour Party or the Soviet Union being the only authority on defining socialism.

I trust you believe the Jewish Virtual Library is a reliable source?

"The term “Zionism” was coined in 1890 by Nathan Birnbaum.
Its general definition means the national movement for the return of the Jewish people to their homeland and the resumption of Jewish sovereignty in the Land of Israel."

You can click on the highlighted part of 'Land of Israel' ie Eretz Yisrael for the definition

Yes zionism is the belief in the self determination of the Jewish people in Israel. There is no definition of the borders of Israel inherent in that definition.

Personally, I’d prefer someone like Ayaan Hirsi Ali. Her stance on secularism and women’s rights resonate with me.

Agree

It’s amazing that thread about the Mayor-Elect of NEW YORK has so many posts about Israel.

WTAF?!

Yep, weird. Same posters spread across multiple threads constantly regurgitating. Feels like mumsnet has been besieged by career campaigners on overtime!

Thanks. I asked because there were reports that Hochul would be obstructive.

I think it’s just two posters going back and forth.

I think Mandan getting elected is a good thing a I really believe that every 20 years or so, the electorate needs to elect a politician in a contained power role (like say a City Mayor or State Governor) just so that the electorate especially the younger ones can be reminded through first hand experience that socialism doesn't work.

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 07/11/2025 09:28

Like all politicians, they say anything to get power. Let's revisit this in a year or so.

We do have people like that but the problem is ‘delivery’ and pleasing everyone, not just people who support you . It’s very easy to promise the earth and have good principles and be ‘a nice person’ - it’s far harder when it comes down to budgets, appeasing everyone and having the media gunning for you - and you end up with people ‘on your own side’ having priorities that don’t align with keeping everything practical ticking over and in order. I lived in Bristol at the point George red trousers was in charge ( forgot his name) - yes lots of fun activities and events went on, city was a totally filthy messy shambles - still a mess in my opinion under greens but to be fair some people there like this scruffy quite youthful ambience and it’s been like this for years so can’t just blame the greens.

Did you type this on your day off? Thank socialism. Or at work? Thank socialism for your rights at work? Or your own business? Thank socialism for an educated workforce. Etc etc

Because Trump is being so responsible with the finances at the moment...

The Republicans always crash the economy and balloon the budget deficit. Last time that the books were balanced was under Clinton.

If only Gore had won all those years ago.

I think it’s a balance between this and incentives to do things. Eg risk and reward.

We need people ready to risk things so jobs can be created.

It’ll be interesting to see how he does. His policies are modern socialism and it’ll be good to see if people and companies stay or change behaviour.

Has she moved to New York?
No, thought not.
What’s she got to do with this thread?
Take a bloody day off.
