Someone who’s passionate, young and willing to break the rules in politics, all while caring about his city and the people in it. I wish we had someone like that here.

Live where you want as long as you’re not committing full scale genocide and in the process of annihilating an entire indigenous population. Jewish people voted for him, a lot of them in fact probably because they’re sick of the likes you lumping them with the lunatics committing horrendous atrocities in Palestine/Gaza.

The Palestinians are far from being annihilated.
The Palestinian population Israel has grown from about 150,000 who remained after the fighting in 1948, to over two million today. The population of Gaza has grown from about 250k to over 2 million in the same timeframe.

Meanwhile, the Jewish populations of Egypt, Syria, Iraq... [fill in Arab country of choice], around a million people in 1948, have shrunk to virtually nothing, forced out in stages.

So the accusations of genocide ring very hollow.

I can only hope it spreads. Much like Polanski here I guess

Oh my days, you really think a man who thinks women can have penises is the future of this country!

At the end of the day Mamdani won on a platform of affordability. Making New York liveable for New Yorkers. Israel wasn't(and rightly so) a major part of his campaign, his campaign was about New Yorkers and their standard of living. I don't really understand why this thread has descended into sneering about Palestine or discussion of Israel. What on earth does the Jewish population of Syria have to do with Mamdani and his election in New York?

No its not but antizionism is very often motivated by antisemitism among non Jews.

No, it’s motivated by the actions and opinions of Zionists

Palestinians are indigenous to the land of Palestine - how can you not know that?

Palestinians are Arabs. Arabs are indigenous to the Arabian peninsula. How can you not know that?

The tenets of Socialism really do need to have a resurgence as they don't mean rich people can't be rich, just that poor people shouldn't have to lead insecure lives in order to facilitate it. It's not rocket science.

Antizionism is motivated by the actions of people who believe in the right of self determination of the Jewish people in Israel? You know how bonkers that sounds? What is it that all people who hold that belief enact?

Are you implying that Palestinians are not indigenous to the land and only Jewish people are?

Palestinians are indigenous to the land of Palestine. They are a protected people with their own unique identity. Before the creation of the modern state of Israel the Jewish people living there called themselves 'Palestinian Jews'.

You can’t claim self determination when you’re an occupying apartheid regime, actively oppressing the indigenous population and denying them self determination.

Not so.
He was supported by young/liberal Jews while others openly challenged his antisemitism.

What anti-Semitism?

Even if that were true of Israel it would have no bearing on their right to self determination.

YADNBU. Hope, not hate. Young, passionate and driven to oppose the egregious mass accumulation of wealth by the 1% in order to make a fairer society. Nearest we have is Polanski and I think it’s wonderful that we have 2 rising stars of hope - one Jewish in the UK and one Muslim in the US who are very much aligned on this. It isn’t about religion or ethnicity - it’s about what is fair and just. It has given many people hope that this emerging generation can do better than we (Gx here) did. Let’s see.

Which part of that isn't true Hmm

I’ve noticed that so many threads are hijacked on the first page by posts about Israel. The words ‘anti semitic’ and ‘Hamas’ seep into every topic immediately. Mamdani’s victory is so much more than this. Can we please try to avoid the Yaxley Lennon rhetoric?

HedwigEliza · 05/11/2025 22:18

By their fruits ye shall know them.

Wait and see what happens, if he delivers on his promises, what the consequences are. And then decide.

What has Yaxley Lennon got to do with the election of the mayor of New York?

Ellen2shoes · 05/11/2025 22:23

Exactly

Every topic, really?

EsmaCannonball · 05/11/2025 22:39

Israel-Gaza is one of Mamdani's self-proclaimed core issues so maybe he's the one who needs to answer the question what that has to do with being Mayor of New York.

When did he proclaim Israel Palestine as a core issue? Don’t be ridiculous.

Ellen2shoes · 05/11/2025 23:13

Rubbish.
He has made it clear that his focus is NY. It’s is your core issue. It’s tedious.
