What’s happening with food stamps in the US?

I’m seeing it all over social media. Has Trump stopped the equivalent of benefits?

Can someone explain please?

@Ponderingwindow and @WhatIsTheCharge thank you for your great posts.

I'm in the US and help run/volunteer at a food pantry. Our clients are really stressed (and already really poor) about the snap benefits ending and we are bracing ourselves for an increase in people using the pantry.

People are already getting notifications that their health care costs will triple in January.

Bobiverse · 30/10/2025 19:35

Did you really just ask if the Epstein files are serious?

No I ‘really’ didn’t. I was asking if the comment in pp was serious, ie they impacted in some way.

Fortunately @WhatIsTheChargegot it and answered.

WhatIsTheCharge · 30/10/2025 19:32

From what I understand, once congress are back sitting again, another vote on releasing the files can be forced…..
And obviously the republicans who blocked it last time don’t want that to happen, especially not now that a good few of their people have jumped ship! (I’m looking at you Majorie Taylor Greene 👀👀👀🫠😂)

Thanks for filling us in with this

It’s such a fucking shit position to be in.

Everything in me is wanting to get involved and help where I can….but I’m also very much aware of our own situation and that my DH may not get paid either this pay cycle or the November 15th pay cycle.
We already chuck a few things in our local supermarket’s donation bin for the food bank every time we go shopping and will continue to do that.
We have a Trunk or Treat event at my kids’ school tonight. It’s a Title 1 school, so a huge proportion of students come from low income households or meet the Title 1 criteria for homelessness. There’s a volunteer meeting after the event so those of us who want to help and are able to help can get together and come up with some school initiatives to help take the edge off where we can for our students and their families who will be struggling as of Saturday.

Surely it doesn’t affect uk folk, I’ve a daily battle with Parkinson’s, why trouble me with this?

Aren't you just lovely. No one troubled you with anything, get off the internet.

I was flabergasted when USA christian nationalists were rejoicing at the news and telling me everyone should buy their food with the money they earn. This is the ideal but not many people earn that well, do they - hence the poverty all over the world

The irony is not lost on me that today the Satanic Temple pledged to dish out food and resources to anyone who needs them…….tumbleweeds from the evangelical churches 🫠🫠👀

Its terrible. I've been following the news on this for a while and reading stories of those who will lose their SNAP benefits. Most of them are working, lots have been struggling with the food price increases. They are just paid bugger all. Very similar to our situation here with UC top ups.

Wtf??? Do you ask this of everything that has no relevance to you? So selfish. Sorry about your daily battle though. Or why did you mention it if you prefer people who are not affected by it not be troubled by it?

Dont have kids if you cant afford them.

All this posting online about being a sahm and getting things for free well them bragging post came back to bite.
The one that openly admit to having more kids because they get money from the men and the system.

ODFO 🫠👍🏻

Again, same as the U.K.: the vast majority of SNAP eligible people are eligible BECAUSE they work. Is it their fault that wages haven’t risen in line with the cost of living?
Or again, is that the fault of massive corporations in the pockets of billionaires?

Go find some more boots to lick.

That just doesn’t work in economies where prices keep rising and wages stagnate.

We need kids. We need people to have kids. And not just the rich. Middle income and lower income are all being squeezed out due to rising prices, inflation and stagnating wages.

The Epstein files are just a sideshow. The actual battle is over the affordable healthcare act. There are currently government subsidies to make it possible for people to afford to buy the now required health insurance on the open market. The republicans want to stop those subsidies. The democrats want them to continue. Without the subsidies, health insurance will become completely unaffordable and people will just have to pay the small annual fine for being uninsured instead.

They will then leave illnesses untreated until it becomes an emergency. At that point hospitals are required to treat them enough to stabilize them regardless of ability to pay. Hospitals will then pass the cost of treating those patients on to the patients who are paying. Thus those of us who do pay for our healthcare will have to pay even more.

since they can’t agree on a budget, the government shuts down and essentially everyone except the elected officials responsible for the mess don’t get paid. Essentials workers like air traffic controllers and military still have to show up to work without a paycheck. So they have the expenses of working like childcare and transportation, but no money coming in.

republicans control both the house and senate. They could push through the budget. They could authorize food stamp spending. They don’t want to take responsibility.

right now they are holding the poor hostage in a way. We can give them healthcare or food.

Either choice has a massive impact on the economy as a whole. Food stamps spending not entering the economy is going to hurt all of us and disrupt the supply chain in general.

It is an horribly disfunctional system. I really hope those people who voted for the moronic president remember this and don’t do something so fucking stupid again- all those maga hat wearing idiots only have themselves to blame.

No, they're money pits.🤣🤣🤣

Children are the most expensive things ever! They are also our most valuable, important resource. That's why it's important that we feed and educate them. Children are a countries most important investment. They are literally the future.

Your future!😱

It's all very well wanging on with your don't have kids if you can't afford them rubbish. The children exist. What do you propose their parents do? Return them to the hospital?

It doesn't work. I've checked.😒

Crikeyalmighty · 30/10/2025 23:50

There really are some absolute charmers on mumsnet these days - it’s not a race to the bottom, it’s perfectly possible to give a shit about an international situation like this (especially when it’s a manufactured one by someone who has dictator tendencies) as well as whatever goes on in the UK - and for the ‘don’t have kids brigade’ this isn’t just affecting people ‘with kids’ - just as UC here isn’t ‘only ‘ relevant to people with kids- there are lots of people on their own who are unemployed or underemployed of all ages and in receipt of UC - same will be true in US - it’s one big reason I think we need to look more towards the EU ( even with any issues) than any moves towards a US style system -

OverDram · 31/10/2025 00:00

So ban abortion but then take away the means to raise the children.

I’m shocked at the US Christians supporting this. In the UK most food banks are ran out of churches. Don’t they have the same Christian spirt in the states

Are the food banks in the US not run by churches?

SouthJersey · 31/10/2025 00:55

Some food banks here are run by religious groups and others are run by community groups. My town has a food bank in our municipal building.

Keep in mind that we have religious groups and churches that are vocal critics of Trump, but it seems that we don't have the loud voice and spending money of the pro-Trump "Christians" (in quotes because I don't think they understand Christianity very well).

There is no good time of the year to worry about how to provide food for your family, but with the holidays approaching and no end to the government closure in sight, it's particularly depressing here.

Regarding the Epstein files, there is a Democratic congresswoman who needs to be sworn in but the Republicans are using the closure to avoid doing so. Once she's in place, there will be enough votes to release the files. At this point, though, I have trouble believing that they aren't already tampered with. The files are one of the reasons that Republicans aren't working to reopen the government.

I hope your salary justifies your minimal effort.

Unfortunately most people's doesn't meet their much higher input. Hence the need for snap.

Im all for the snap if used in the right way the same as i feel with UK benefits.
But for what ive seen women are going crazy over it.
Saying its the tax payers responsibility to feed their kid.
One saying she has 7 kids with 7 dads another with 5 kids why did they have more kids when they knew they was struggling in the first place.
Openly saying they scam the system.

I didnt help make any kids they choose to lay down so why should tax payers have to pay for them and fund them.
