I’m seeing it all over social media. Has Trump stopped the equivalent of benefits?

Can someone explain please?

Thank you for your informative posts @WhatIsTheCharge.Thanks Does the shutdown mean ICE employees won't be paid?

According to news sources, some are getting paid, some aren’t.
Theres approximately 21,000-ish enforcement agents currently employed, and the latest numbers say that 19,000-ish aren’t getting paid - same as every other government employee.
The ones who are getting paid are the ones currently working on the large-scale enforcement ops - like Chicago.

Yeah.
When it happened last time under Trump, we got back pay.

This time?
I’m more likely to believe that Elvis is going to knock on my door.

And all while he's set to take $230,000,000 from his own justice department (or, rather, the American taxpayer) for "compensation".

BettysRoasties · 30/10/2025 18:59

Crazy to possibly be able to get away with not paying people back pay and yet expecting the to work.

Well the whole situation is crazy but wow.

Pleasegetmeacoffeesotired · 30/10/2025 19:00

I really really hope we get back pay 🥲

Plus the other $200million + that’s being spent on building his gilded ballroom 🫠

A good friend of mine was in DC last week, and the first day she was there, you could see all the construction. The next day, they’d put up enormous screens so nobody can see anything through the fences.

Me too!

My family are lucky in a sense - we got our PCS orders in hand just before the shutdown started. So we aren’t affected by the pause/cancellation of people’s PCS moves…..BUT we’ve got a lot of shit to pay for during the course of our overseas move! 2 cars to buy and insure once we get there, deposit to pay on our new place, 3 sets of school uniform to buy. Might be a tad bit of a squeeze with no paycheck in mid-November 🫠🫠🫠🫠🫠

mindutopia · 30/10/2025 19:05

Not to mention all the government employees who have lost their jobs this year. I can count maybe 10 friends, all very educated professionals with master’s and PhDs, who have had their departments completely disbanded. All of them working in health, housing, disability and foreign aid. Probably some of them now needing to rely on government assistance because they’ve lost half or all of their income since January.

I hope you do too…that’s a lot of money to manage without!!

TomatoSandwiches · 30/10/2025 19:09

Let's face it though, ICE agents would probably do the job for a free dinner anyway, fucking fascists.

I’m trying to read up on it. It’s crazy. How is it legal to pause like this?

Government shut downs happen in the US a lot. They’ve happened under democratic and republican presidents. How do you know know about these?

They haven’t set a budget, so the government shuts down. Usually both sides want to work towards a budget and an agreement but they do play a little bit of chicken. The problem is Trump, he won’t give them the go ahead to vote (they don’t need it but they won’t do anything without a nod from him).

It does happen. Not every year, but often enough.
Usually it only lasts a week or so, budget gets passed and everything goes back to normal.

This time it’s fucking insane.

Why won’t they pass the budget @WhatIsTheCharge?

Bobiverse · 30/10/2025 19:24

Healthcare subsidies.

bloodredfeaturewall · 30/10/2025 19:25

this must be horrendously stressful for anyone affected.

WhatIsTheCharge · 30/10/2025 19:25

EasternStandard · 30/10/2025 19:20

Why won’t they pass the budget @WhatIsTheCharge?

Because they can’t agree on certain aspects of it.
healthcare being a huge one.
The government subsidies that fund healthcare assistance programs.
Democrats won’t agree until the subsidies are approved.
Republicans don’t want to approve them and have been riding the ass of “those subsidies pay for healthcare for illegals” which is just untrue.
Those subsidies help pay for emergency treatment for ANYONE who shows up at a US emergency department needing emergency care and doesn’t have insurance as per the EMTALA laws that have been in place since 1986 under Reagan.

This is what happens without a welfare safety net for all those wanting to get rid of benefits.

Ok thanks. Is the Epstein files part serious, how does that impact it?

From what I understand, once congress are back sitting again, another vote on releasing the files can be forced…..
And obviously the republicans who blocked it last time don’t want that to happen, especially not now that a good few of their people have jumped ship! (I’m looking at you Majorie Taylor Greene 👀👀👀🫠😂)

FOJN · 30/10/2025 19:34

WhatIsTheCharge · 30/10/2025 18:39

Everyone is in those files.
Both sides of the aisle - republican, democrat and everything in between.
I’m not saying every single one of them is a paedophile……but what I am saying is that if you follow the money, it will lead you to all of them.

I think you're right and I have a strong suspicion that half of Westminster will be in those files too. I think there will be quite a number of people involved in the sex trafficking of minors but I think there will be far more people involved in financial crimes associated with GE.

SNAP is a welfare safety net. Government is shut down so the funds aren’t being released for it.

If we operated the same way and had government shut downs were all public funds have a stop put on them, then benefits in this country wouldn’t be paid either, unless they used an emergency fund.
