I’m seeing it all over social media. Has Trump stopped the equivalent of benefits?

Can someone explain please?

The Epstein files are just a sideshow. The actual battle is over the affordable healthcare act. There are currently government subsidies to make it possible for people to afford to buy the now required health insurance on the open market. The republicans want to stop those subsidies. The democrats want them to continue. Without the subsidies, health insurance will become completely unaffordable and people will just have to pay the small annual fine for being uninsured instead.

They will then leave illnesses untreated until it becomes an emergency. At that point hospitals are required to treat them enough to stabilize them regardless of ability to pay. Hospitals will then pass the cost of treating those patients on to the patients who are paying. Thus those of us who do pay for our healthcare will have to pay even more.

since they can’t agree on a budget, the government shuts down and essentially everyone except the elected officials responsible for the mess don’t get paid. Essentials workers like air traffic controllers and military still have to show up to work without a paycheck. So they have the expenses of working like childcare and transportation, but no money coming in.

republicans control both the house and senate. They could push through the budget. They could authorize food stamp spending. They don’t want to take responsibility.

right now they are holding the poor hostage in a way. We can give them healthcare or food.

Either choice has a massive impact on the economy as a whole. Food stamps spending not entering the economy is going to hurt all of us and disrupt the supply chain in general.

Agree.

But remember that a lot of the childcare and public transportation sectors are also dependent on federal subsidies. Many phblic transport systems will grind to a halt or cut services when the money stops, and daycare facilities that accept or rely on federal subsidies under various programs will be forced to close, with families rendered unable to work, or more likely, mothers unable to work (a la Project 25).

Surely it doesn’t affect uk folk, I’ve a daily battle with Parkinson’s, why trouble me with this?

Parkinson's doesn't affect me, why are you troubling us with it?

Do you see how that sounds?

@coffeeccrisp what has been sorted?

the food stamp issue? It has not. Just because two federal judges said the food stamps should be paid does not mean people have food stamps. We have to wait and see in the next couple of weeks if that money appears.

Even if Trump issued an executive order to pay the money, there would be logistical barriers to getting the money distributed quickly off schedule, especially with so much of the federal workforce furloughed.

in the meantime, people still have nothing and food banks are overwhelmed.

OverDram · 31/10/2025 00:00

So ban abortion but then take away the means to raise the children.

I’m shocked at the US Christians supporting this. In the UK most food banks are ran out of churches. Don’t they have the same Christian spirt in the states

There are some crazy beliefs around. Prosperity gospel preaches that wealth is God's will, the implication of which being that poor people must be bad. In the US these days Jesus would be denounced as a "commie" for his dangerous teachings like loving thy neighbour.

Poetnojo · 02/11/2025 02:34

ThatDreamyLemonBiscuit · 30/10/2025 18:49

Yes but at least the democrats (and, to their credit, some republicans) want to see the files released.

I'm pretty confident Trump has been involved in some of the more heinous crimes, though. It's hard to explain away things like the FBI questioning Epstien on whether he had "socialized" with Trump and underage girls, Trump's extraordinary intervention with Ghislaine Maxwell (and moving her to a cushy prison) and general attempts at concealment, plus the court claims filed (with supportive witness statements) - then dropped, seemingly under some pressure - re. his alleged forcible rape of a minor.

Obviously there are others who are under real suspicion, but the strongest evidence of guilt seems to be in relation to Trump.

If what you say is true, why were the files not released under Biden Harris?

Really? It's seems the republicans are pro Christ and the Democrats are very anti Christ, no?
And from what I've seen, a lot of churches are running food drives.

Because plenty of Dems will be in those files as well 👀👀👀

Not everyone in there will have directly abused children…..but follow the money and there will be endless financial crimes on both sides of the political spectrum tying back to the abuse, either directly or indirectly.

I don't know the answer to this, but I do know that one of the things Trump campaigned hard on, was the promise of full release of the Epstein files.

Now he says they don't exist? WTF?🤯

Was he lying to people about this during his campaign or is he lying now?

Im all for the snap if used in the right way the same as i feel with UK benefits.
But for what ive seen women are going crazy over it.
Saying its the tax payers responsibility to feed their kid.
One saying she has 7 kids with 7 dads another with 5 kids why did they have more kids when they knew they was struggling in the first place.
Openly saying they scam the system.

I didnt help make any kids they choose to lay down so why should tax payers have to pay for them and fund them.

You do know that that video was AI generated, right? Even Fox News is admitting it was AI.

You are free to have what I consider repellent views, but please check the sources that are foundational in forming them.

AI videos of SNAP beneficiaries complaining about cuts go viral

Realistic, apparently AI videos have gone viral showing food stamp recipients reacting with anger to the government shutdown affecting benefits.

The majority of Christian Church goers in the US are republicans.

Poetnojo · 02/11/2025 15:26

Then why do republicans outnumber Democrats in Christian church attendance?

As a Brit who’d never experienced the very American brand of Christianity until I came here: From my observations, church-going is more of a cultural expectation than anything in certain areas of the US. The church is the community hub, not just a place of worship. If you’re the one family who don’t show up in a Wednesday evening and a Sunday morning, you’re also not welcome anywhere else within the community. Generally speaking, the further south you go, the higher the numbers of church attendees.
Which directly correlates to the political map: the further south you go, the more red the maps turn.

Poetnojo · 02/11/2025 15:26

Then why do republicans outnumber Democrats in Christian church attendance?

Many Christian Republicans are followers of the prosperity gospel which differs from what many people in the UK would recognise as Christian teaching. People like Joel Osteen for example who preaches that “it’s God’s will for you to live in prosperity instead of poverty” and that “you must boldly declare words of faith and victory over yourself.” In other words if you're poor then it's your own fault.
Why would you give to poor people? Live a Christian life and the wealth will come to you.

The Joel Olsteen who’s church resembles a Premier League stadium 🫠🫠😂

WILD to me as an outsider looking in.

BadgernTheGarden · 02/11/2025 15:59

Trump is basically black mailing the government to do what he wants regardless, or he will start starving his own population. What a nice guy.

Poetnojo · 02/11/2025 02:34

Trump says there are no files, nothing to see here, but then he was very friendly with Epstein.

BadgernTheGarden · 02/11/2025 16:07

Poetnojo · 02/11/2025 15:26

Then why do republicans outnumber Democrats in Christian church attendance?

Americans are much more Christian, ie, church goers, than people in the UK, if you don't go to church you don't have social standing in many places. Whether a fraction of them would actually pass as Christians in the life they live is a different matter. Not sure there is much difference between the political parties in that respect.

DdraigGoch · 02/11/2025 16:49

Poetnojo · 02/11/2025 02:38

Really? It's seems the republicans are pro Christ and the Democrats are very anti Christ, no?
And from what I've seen, a lot of churches are running food drives.

They loudly proclaim their supposed Christianity but stop short of actually following anything written in the Bible:

When a stranger sojourns with you in your land, you shall not do him wrong. You shall treat the stranger who sojourns with you as the native among you, and you shall love him as yourself, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt

Cursed is anyone who withholds justice from the foreigner, the fatherless or the widow

Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth

It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God

I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me.

Rather a contrast to the views of the 'Christian Right' who hate immigrants and the poor.

Look at Trump, he's practically a personification of the seven deadly sins: pride, greed, wrath, envy, lust, gluttony, and sloth
