Was listening to some music today and after my playlist was finished Spotify went off on its own little algorithm-y journey, and I suddenly found myself listening to a song so beautiful I had it on repeat for about an hour. That sort of thing happens to me very rarely, so I thought I’d see if anyone else could recommend songs that have struck them in a similar way.

Stan - Eminem. I remember jo whiley playing it on her radio 1 show and prefacing the first time it was played with a note about the content but that it was an important song. She was right, of course.

also Ooberman - Shorley wall. Another Jo Whiley find.

Tiktok is currently keen to show me Labi Siffre singing the Telephone Song, which he wrote for someone he loved who was far away, and I watch it every time because it's so simple and beautiful and perfect.

menopausalfart · 28/10/2025 20:11

Sausagedognamedmash · 28/10/2025 20:11

Euclid - Sleep Token.
One of the most powerfully emotional songs I've heard in a long time. Goosebumps every time.

EleanorReally · 28/10/2025 20:12

Samba Pa Ti - Santana
Oh Well Fleetwood Mac

Cerialkiller · 28/10/2025 20:12

Someone like you - Adele. A work partner and I had just arrived at our destination ready to start work and we both paused and then stared at the radio in silence as the whole song played, neither moving to get out.

Tesselate - alt j. Heard it for the first time on my commute home from work. Was so hypnotised I didn't realise the lights had turned green until a car behind me honked.

ACatAsleepInYourHat · 28/10/2025 20:13

Under The Ivy by Kate Bush. I'd loaded the extended version of Hounds of Love (with additional tracks I'd not heard before) onto my ancient mp3 player, and I was listening to it on a quiet night shift. It stopped me in my tracks and I spontaneously found myself in floods of tears; I don't think I've ever had such an emotional reaction to a piece of music.

tupils · 28/10/2025 20:13

Oh and Wind Beneath my Wings - Bette Midler. Made me cry on the spot, first time of hearing, and still does.

SeaAndStars · 28/10/2025 20:14

Harder than you think - Public Enemy
Starman - David Bowie
Love will tear us apart - Joy Division

MaidOfSteel · 28/10/2025 20:14

Ooh I have quite a few! Off the top of my head:

In Your Eyes by Peter Gabriel.
Your Love by The Outfield.
You by Ten Sharp.
If I Can’t Have You by Yvonne Elliman.
Stay With Me Till Dawn by Judie Tzuke.

My heart jumps a little when I hear the first notes.

PommesdePlume · 28/10/2025 20:16

Dice, Finlay Quaye. Wobbly lip every time.

Sounds sad but the theme tune for War of the Worlds. It was used as an ad recently (Virgin broadband I think).

ClaredeBear · 28/10/2025 20:17

A Different Corner, by George Michael. I was 12 and a massive Duranie. I’d bought The Final begrudgingly (from Woolies!). I heard that song and realised George Michael was an incredibly talented songwriter. I remember having to tell someone so I told my mother, which was daft of me.

Dollymylove · 28/10/2025 20:18

If this is goodbye. Mark Knopfler and Emmy Lou Harries
Based on the final texts to loved ones on 9/11 when they knew they wouldn't survive 😢
