Was listening to some music today and after my playlist was finished Spotify went off on its own little algorithm-y journey, and I suddenly found myself listening to a song so beautiful I had it on repeat for about an hour. That sort of thing happens to me very rarely, so I thought I’d see if anyone else could recommend songs that have struck them in a similar way.

She Moved Through The Fair - such a sad and beautiful old Irish song.

The old ones were saying ' no two were e'er wed / but one had a secret that never was said '. I bet that is true very often.

MimiGC · 21/11/2025 13:23

I can remember exactly where I was. 1988. Fast Car by Tracy Chapman.

Ooh actually this for me too. We were in Geography, probably year 8 and learning about immigration. Our wonderful geography teacher used it to spark discussion (and likely to introduce us to something that wasn’t Take That or the Back Street Boys).

Dan Hill," Sometimes when we touch, the honesty's too much..", Janis Ian "Angel", Paul Brady " Nothing but the sane old story", Paul Brady , " The Island", Neil Young, "The Needle and the Damage done"

In honour of Mani's sad passing away yesterday, I nominate Sally Cinnamon by The Stone Roses. It opened up a whole new world of music for me as a 15 year old. Sorry NKOTB, you just couldn't compete!

What do you mean?

It's the last verse of the song . I think he means the man still yearned for his dead lover , though he went on to wed another? I'm sure lots of men and women didn't marry the real love of their lives - hence the ' secret that never was said '....

Clawdy · 26/11/2025 20:15

I think those lines about the "secret" have had people a bit puzzled, with different interpretations over the years.

Quite a few. All of these sounded like nothing I had heard before.

Blue Monday by New Order
Welcome to the Jungle - Guns'n'Roses
This Corrosion - Sisters of Mercy
Killing in the Name - RATM
Bat Out of Hell - Meatloaf
Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen

Welcome to the jungle… first heard it in a record shop (remember those!) coming out of the overhead speakers… I was transfixed & still am!

EstherGreenwood63 · 16/04/2026 22:14

How Soon Is Now? by The Smiths

Sullivan's Long Day Closes sung by The Sixteen.

The final chorale from J.S. Bach's Wachet auf cantata, Gloria sei dir gesungen, sung by John Eliot Gardiner's band.

May You Never by John Martyn.

Purcell's When I am laid in Earth (Dido's Lament) sung by Andras Scholl.

May You Never…,the line ‘may you never lay your head down without a hand to hold’ … magic, just magic!

whyayepetal · 16/04/2026 22:20

Run To You, by Pentatotonix

StHilarion · 16/04/2026 23:07

BonBon10 · 16/04/2026 23:20

You are so beautiful- Joe Cocker live performance you tube 😍 my parents always played his music, this was their track. Sadly one has passed and the other has dementia, this will be played at the funeral of the other its their song.

Robogob · 16/04/2026 23:24

San Jacinto by Peter Gabriel. That first “I hold the line” is my favourite thing in all music ever.

Sorry I just spotted this as the thread popped up again.

Well it could be anything. But in the context of this song , perhaps he is marrying after the death of his true love? The classic ' secret love' storyline.

Wordsmithery · 17/04/2026 08:53

I don't like Mondays.

I vividly remember hearing it for the first time. There had been build up to it all day on the radio.

That piano.

the80sweregreat · 17/04/2026 08:59

Another vote for ‘ I don’t like Mondays’ ( boomtown rats)
I went out and bought the single the same day in Boots.
Was so pleased they did a longer version on the album.

Newname71 · 17/04/2026 09:03

Civil War- Guns & Roses
Broken- Seether with Amy Lee
Watch the world Burn - Falling in Reverse
But most recently Good Citizen - Iyah May. If you decide to give this a listen on YouTube choose the version with lyrics on screen!

dazzlingdeborahrose · 17/04/2026 09:07

Beth Neilson’s Sand and Water. Gets me every time
I’ve also been listening to Clannad the past couple of days since Moya Brennan died. What a voice. Theme to Harry’s Game is a classic.

Oh gawd ...I already replied to this in November and didn't notice. Another senior moment.

VickyEadieofThigh · 17/04/2026 10:30

Jar of Hearts by Christina Perri. It immediately plunged me back more than 30 years to when I'd just come out of 3 years with a man I adored but who treated me badly.
