Was listening to some music today and after my playlist was finished Spotify went off on its own little algorithm-y journey, and I suddenly found myself listening to a song so beautiful I had it on repeat for about an hour. That sort of thing happens to me very rarely, so I thought I’d see if anyone else could recommend songs that have struck them in a similar way.

A Different Corner, by George Michael. I was 12 and a massive Duranie. I’d bought The Final begrudgingly (from Woolies!). I heard that song and realised George Michael was an incredibly talented songwriter. I remember having to tell someone so I told my mother, which was daft of me.

I would give you all of my life,
But to lose you would cut like a knife,
So I don’t dare.

Yes I’m with you @ClaredeBear , what a voice. Chris Martin did a great job of covering this in in George’s tribute. It didn’t come close, no disrespect to CM. Breaks my heart every time I hear it.

Laid by James stopped me in my tracks when it came on the radio today. I could have cried but decided to have a little kitchen dance instead.
Barcelona by Freddie Mercury and Montserrat Caballe and Love of my Life by Queen. Gives me chills.
Have you ever seen the rain -Willie Nelson version

Waitingfordoggo · 28/10/2025 20:31

Nothing Compares 2 U (Sinead O’Connor). Such a beautiful, mournful melody and Sinead really belts it out with so much pain. Stunning song.

Born Slippy! (Underworld) It would be inaccurate actually to say it stopped me in my tracks- it made me dance my ARSE off. I still bloody love it and will immediately head to the dancefloor when I hear those opening chords.

Recently, anything by Ren but especially ‘Hi Ren’ and ‘The Tale of Jenny and Screech’. His work stops me in my tracks because I have to pay attention and I get completely drawn in to his incredible storytelling. It’s really not music that you just have on in the background.

Transmission - Joy Division.

CantBreathe90 · 28/10/2025 20:32

Ugly Boy by Die Antwoord. The video is mesmerising too, I watched / listened to it three times in a row when I discovered it.

Shakespeare Sister, Stay, N-Trance, Set Your Free, Celine Dion, Think Twice. I was very young when they came out, under 10. I still remember just going still and feeling amazing when I heard them.
Coldplay, Fix You. It helped me through a tough time, a lot of people I speak to about this see it as a sad song but it makes me feel really positive.
Beyonce, Halo. Beautiful song. I heard it for the first time holding my newborn and felt overwhelming love for him.

crumpet · 28/10/2025 20:33

Caliban’s Dream by Underworld. Written for London 2012 torch lighting, and is just beautiful.

Mine was Save Your Tears by Ariana Grande and The Weekend. I hadn't heard until three years after it came out and it was playing in New Look. I had to ask my teenage daughter who it was. She thought it was hilarious ;)

Edited

I love that song.

MyBoldGreyPoet · 28/10/2025 20:35

For me, the song that changed me, changed the world of music for me, is The National's song Pink Rabbits, which is on their album Trouble Will Find Me. I had never thought that a song could be like that, ever. From that moment on, music has enriched my life ever since.

Disturbed's version of The Sound of Silence gives me goosebumps every time I listen to it! It's absolutely amazing.
