Was listening to some music today and after my playlist was finished Spotify went off on its own little algorithm-y journey, and I suddenly found myself listening to a song so beautiful I had it on repeat for about an hour. That sort of thing happens to me very rarely, so I thought I’d see if anyone else could recommend songs that have struck them in a similar way.

Ooh - too many and some lovely reminders! Probably, given OP's directive re first hearing of, top would be Bruce Springsteen and 'Darkness at the edge of Town'. 'Creep', Radiohead and 'Crazy in Love' - Beyonce - which I think is the ultimate 'Pop Song' apart from anything by the 'RAMONES'!

Agree re Crazy in Love - pure distillation of pop/r'n'b/funk brilliance

Lorraine Ellison singing Stay with me baby. I broke out in goosebumps and the tears started flowing. Totally involuntary response.

Lovely by Terry Reid too.

A Forest by the Cure, heard in my local biker pub late one Friday night, in the 80s. Never forgotten, it remains a favourite to this day.

This always makes me cry, as I lost my dog around the time I heard it, and I thought of our walks together 😭

ThisCraftySeal · 30/10/2025 17:55

Blasphemous rumours and somebody by depeche mode. I have to say I really don’t like Depeche Mode normally but when I heard these two songs when I was16 ( mid 80’s) I was in awe of them. The lyrics especially Blasphemous Rumours really hit me

I’d known Stevie Winwood’s version of Higher Love for decades, but when this remake was used by Bord Fáilte, I was blown away.

Marjorie by Taylor Swift.

Someone on here told me to listen to it when I lost my Grandma. It gets me everytime.

It’s a lovely song, I thought of mine when I watched her perform it at the Era’s tour and it made me cry.

Honey Be Good - The Bible

JustMovingUncomfortablySlow · 30/10/2025 19:43

Without a doubt for me its Carry You by Newton Faulkner.
About 90 seconds into the song he changes the pitch and tone and his voice soars. One of the most beautiful things I have ever heard.

Also:

Tears From Heaven - Eric Clapton. First heard it on MTV Unplugged and cried and cried.

One that had no impact on me when it came out was Rule The World by Take That.

Then I heard Gary Barlow & Co sing it at the 2012 Olympics a couple of days after his daughter was stillborn - the lyrics took on a whole new meaning and I've never understood how he managed to get through singing it. Makes me cry and send a little thought to his daughter every time I hear it.

Pitstopperils · 30/10/2025 19:50

Ordinary World by Duran Duran, a complete change to their previous work & haunting lyrics.

Psycho by Red Velvet, I am not a K Pop fan but this is an amazing song and I have since become a bit of a Red Velvet fan, as I like their slightly darker side.
I Believe by Wendy. Wendy is in Red Velvet, and has a stunning voice. Luckily the chorus is in English. It's just haunting and uplifting all wrapped up in one song.
Pour Some Sugar On Me by Def Leppard - what can I say, other than wow.

NeedWineNow · 30/10/2025 20:22

For those that mentioned Crazy in Love by Beyoncé that is a belter. I have such a girl crush on Beyoncé, I think she’s fabulous.

Everlong by the mighty Foos

Weekend in New England by Barry Manilow

She Used to be Mine from Waitress. My dance teacher uses this in our ballet class and it’s beautiful.

I vividly remember the Firestarter video being played on MTV on the screens in my gym in 1996 - the entire place went silent as everyone stopped working out and stared at the TVs in amazement 🤣

RIP Keith Flint, what a legend.

Ah Keith was my first crush! I remember Firestarter being played all the time on one of the old music channels when we first got Sky. I was obsessed with it! Surprised I remember it as I'd have only been about 6.

Mine was Save Your Tears by Ariana Grande and The Weekend. I hadn't heard until three years after it came out and it was playing in New Look. I had to ask my teenage daughter who it was. She thought it was hilarious ;)

Edited

My brother has a band and they do some songs a bit like that one.

DrCoconut · 30/10/2025 20:36

Street of Dreams by Rainbow and Now the Time Has Come by Europe. They will one day carry me out of this world to the last one.
