To ask which songs stopped you in your tracks the first time heard you them?

Was listening to some music today and after my playlist was finished Spotify went off on its own little algorithm-y journey, and I suddenly found myself listening to a song so beautiful I had it on repeat for about an hour. That sort of thing happens to me very rarely, so I thought I’d see if anyone else could recommend songs that have struck them in a similar way.

The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face by George Michael, and it still stops me in my tracks every time I hear it.

Fast car by Tracey.... damn I've forgotten her surname

Chapman.
Great song. Appreciate it a lot more now that older.

Vetoncall · 30/10/2025 12:58

Dancing in the Dark by Bruce Springsteen.
Where the Streets Have No Name and Even Better Than the Real Thing by U2.

Recently I had a similar reaction to People Watching by Sam Fender, and I think it sounds Springsteen-esque.

I'll second Jeff Buckley's Hallelujah

I've always found it so beautiful and moving, but it holds an even more special place after it was played at the end of a outdoor yoga session on a Greek island, the instructor turned it off as it made me cry, only to hear further down the hill it being sung live by a choir, still gives me goose bumps now.

This Mortal Coil - Song to the Siren

First heard it while walking alone in the middle of nowhere during the first lock down. I was trying to escape a horribly abusive marriage with my little boy. It stopped me in my tracks and the tears just came.

Blame by Gabriel’s- what a voice! Couldn’t place it at all - was it an old song? New? Man? Woman?

me too, I think I must have several hundred that have hit me immediately like that, (knew they'd be a sure hit song) Off top of my head, a few I clearly remember hearing the 1st time while driving in my car: Prince 1999, Hozier Take Me to Church....someone mentioned Otis Reading, Dock of the Bay and disturbed-sound of silence....Same! I think I was under 10yrs old for the Otis R song!

Same, but only the Roberta Flack version, it’s so emotional.

Some great songs here.

Another Love (Tom Odell) got me instantly. I can still remember where I was when I first heard it. It’s been overplayed in later years but at the time it took me straight back to living in London with a broken heart.

Whoever said ‘New York state of mind’ and ‘Romeo and Juliet’ hell yes!

Floortoceiling · 30/10/2025 15:52

Too many to mention, but including:
• I want your (hands on me) - Sinead O'Connor
• In the garden / Madame George - Van Morrison
• Everybody here wants you - Jeff Buckley
• Calling you - Jevetta Steele
• You get what you give - New Young Radicals
• Sweet disposition - The Temper Trap
• Running up that hill - Kate Bush
• A case of you - Joni Mitchell

Howmanycatsistoomany · 30/10/2025 15:59

Aluna · 29/10/2025 10:02

Originally written and sung by Chris Stapleton - incomparably better singer and songwriter than Josh.

In fact, Chris’s songs have been some of my ‘moments’ - I Was Wrong, Cold, Think I’m In Love with You, his version of Tennessee Whisky etc,

His Fire Away video stopped me in my tracks.

Floortoceiling · 30/10/2025 15:59

And:
• Unfinished sympathy - Massive Attack
• Crazy in love - Beyonce & Jay-Z
• Natural woman / I say a little prayer - Aretha Franklin
• Love don't live here anymore - Rose Royce
• I feel for you - Chaka Khan

This is a good game.

Bboy1234 · 30/10/2025 16:09

Hear you me - Jimmy eat World

River - Joni Mitchell

White wine in the sun - Tim Minchin
