Was listening to some music today and after my playlist was finished Spotify went off on its own little algorithm-y journey, and I suddenly found myself listening to a song so beautiful I had it on repeat for about an hour. That sort of thing happens to me very rarely, so I thought I’d see if anyone else could recommend songs that have struck them in a similar way.

Mimosa3andmore · 30/10/2025 20:47

Space by Biffy Clyro. Took a long time before I could hear that without crying. Real lump in the throat when I first heard that.

It’s a lovely song, I thought of mine when I watched her perform it at the Era’s tour and it made me cry.

I bet that was such a beautiful moment seeing her perform it. I would have been crying with you if I was there. 💐❤️

Summergarden · 30/10/2025 20:55

You have Been Loved- George Michael

The Man who Sold the World- Nirvana

Another Brick in the Wall- Pink Floyd

No Tomorrow-Orson

Wicked Game- Chris Isaak

Notascouser1990 · 30/10/2025 20:59

Anyway here's mine:
Famous Last Words- MCR
Death- White Lies. The Crystal Castles remix is very haunting and reminds me of starting uni in Manchester and feeling very lonely.
The whole of Loveless by My Bloody Valentine
Good Name- William Onyebore
Getaway- Blossoms. Went through a horrible break up when that album came out and moved back to my home town. I still have a soft spot for that band 10 years on.

Notascouser1990 · 30/10/2025 21:11

Oh and having recently moved to Liverpool completely on my own and being an LFC fan You'll Never Walk Alone always gives me goosebumps.

Hate to break it to you , I also thought it was Knights for years, but it’s Nights .

Is it really!! Well there you go 😂

Mum2Fergus · 30/10/2025 21:18

Mazzy Star, Fade into You
lizzie West, Chariots Rise

ShutItTadger · 30/10/2025 21:36

Snuff by Slipknot ❤️

Tortielady · 30/10/2025 21:38

There are so many: the one thing they had in common was that none of them had to grow on me. However, if I had to pick out a couple from a particularly impressionable time in my life:

Until The Night - Billy Joel
Because The Night - Patty Smith

Played this to the teenagers last week and nearly crashed the car!

His cover of If You Could Read My Mind is so full of pain I can hardly listen to it. It's beautiful, but a very different experience to Gordon Lightfoot's original.

Tortielady · 30/10/2025 22:21

TimothyIsNotAnArmardillo · 28/10/2025 23:09

Sinead O’Connor - Troy
Elvis Costello - I want you
The Mission - Severina
Springsteen - Thunder Road
The Smiths - This Charming Man
Chris Isack - Wicked Game

Have you heard Fiona Apple's cover of I Want You? It's so powerful it smacks Costello's original into next week. I can't listen to it very often because I really have to be in the mood - but it's brilliant.

Notascouser1990 · 31/10/2025 01:06

Some more as I can't edit my original comments:

The Kids Aren't Alright- Offspring
American Idiot- Green Day (I was a teenager and it was when Bush was US president. Its also very relevant now IMO)
Sometimes- James. I want this as my first dance song if I ever manage to get married
Shape Of My Heart- Sting. Its the ending song from one of my favourite films (and another potential wedding first dance song)
Drain The Blood- Distillers
Du Haste- Rammstein
You're Not Alone- Olive
Falling- Julie Cruise (Twin Peaks theme)
Swamp Thing- The Chameleons

Obviously I heard all of these songs as I got older

Radiohead: street spirit (fade out). I love that song so much!! It doesn’t depress me or raise me but it does really get into the nooks and crannies of my soul.

LandladyofTheValley · 31/10/2025 15:54

Two songs, both for the same reason.

Lola Young Messy, because I felt those lyrics, it was 15 year old being told once again by my awful abusive mother that I wasn't good enough and never would be. Everything I did was wrong. That made me absolutely cry my eyes out.

Similar but Gotye, Somebody I used to Know. Not his bit, the bit the girl sings. It's like adult me telling the same mother what I feel and how she made me feel. She had written me a letter around the same time full of self pity and how I was wrong. It was after Social workers looked at old files when the department where I grew up due to historical failings and they contacted me to say I should've been removed from my parents. She had been written to as part of that.
I wrote back to her with the lyrics to the girls bit. Just that on cream card. I doubt she got the reference but it's the last time I ever spoke to her.

exiledfromcornwall · 31/10/2025 16:33

I've just thought of another one. Shine On You Crazy Diamond by Pink Floyd. As a student I had an achingly trendy tutor who invited a bunch of us round to hers for tea. She said she would put some music on, and chose Shine On You Crazy Diamond. I remember sitting there transfixed. I had never heard anything like it.

dontforgetme · 31/10/2025 16:36

@RayonSunrise this is fucking brilliant.

@YelramBob so is this.

dontforgetme · 31/10/2025 16:46

I’ve got a couple from when I was kid and hearing my mom and dad play them:

Cry Little Sister from The Lost Boys - vividly remember just thinking WOW.
Never Let Me Down Again - Depeche Mode
How Soon Is Now - The Smiths
The Chauffeur - Duran Duran (I was fucking obsessed with this)

Music I discovered myself:

Don’t Forget Me - RHCP First time I heard this I was at a house party and I literally stopped in my tracks. To this day it’s my favourite song in the world.
Crystal - Stevie Nicks
Cinnamon Girl - Lana Del Ray
You Know You’re Right - Nirvana

Pale Blue Eyes by The Velvet Underground

It's a song about realising you can't have someone you love. I was at the time in love with a man with the most beautiful blue eyes. He'd recently been sent abroad, I had miscarried the baby I didn't know we were having, the relationship was ending and I'm on a bus coming home after a long day at work, and it stunned me. It felt like Spotify was in my head and knew just what I needed to hear.

It's been a few years now and everyime I hear it now I think of him and hope he's doing ok.

Fields of Gold

Uricon2 · 31/10/2025 17:42

I was doing my homework and Kate Bush singing 'Wuthering Heights' came on the radio, I think it may have been the first time it was ever played on Radio 1. I was stunned and went into school saying she was fantastic and was going to be a big star and everyone had to hear it.

She chose not to be as 'big' as she could have been (and I respect her for her decisions) but I'm a lifelong fan.

OverlyFragrant · 31/10/2025 18:25

And of course one of the most beautiful songs to ever grace the planet.

O mio babbino caro

Everytime I hear it i just have to pause and FEEL.

Saysheshe · 31/10/2025 19:08

Spectre by Emma Jean Thackray. Going to see her live next week.
Trouble by Say She She
So mi stay by Nubiyan Twist

NeedAnyHelpWithThatPaperBag · 31/10/2025 21:07

Thought of another one: Helen Reddy - I am Woman.
