Was listening to some music today and after my playlist was finished Spotify went off on its own little algorithm-y journey, and I suddenly found myself listening to a song so beautiful I had it on repeat for about an hour. That sort of thing happens to me very rarely, so I thought I’d see if anyone else could recommend songs that have struck them in a similar way.

OP posts:

Tom Waits - Martha
Kate Bush - This womans work

Needhelp101 · 30/10/2025 07:23

Lose Yourself, Eminem. Heard on the radio driving home and remember sitting in the driving seat while it played out, absolutely transfixed.

squashyhat · 30/10/2025 07:26

Joni Mitchell - Down to You
Billy Joel- The Downeaster Alexa

ThatGladTiger · 30/10/2025 07:36

Birdhouse in your soul - They might be giants
Once in a lifetime - talking heads

i remember thinking these were unlike any songs I’d heard on the radio before

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 30/10/2025 07:38

Northern Skies - I am Kloot

Heard it in Sainsbury’s about 15 years ago, and had to rush home to google the lyrics I could remember and find out what it is.

I find the imagery beautiful. It takes me to a very specific time and place. I want it at my funeral.

The Whole of the Moon will forever live rent free in my head as Graham Norton playing a guitar wielding, crazily upbeat priest on the episode of Father Ted when they are camping in the pouring rain.

Ha! I've watched Father Ted a couple of times and don't remember that at all - good excuse to watch it again, I reckon!

Oh, I still remember the first time I heard Birdhouse in Your Soul -it was Simon Mayo's Record of the Week on Radio 1! A great song that I'll still sing along to if it comes on while we're driving!

Hi Ren by Ren Gill.

blew me away.

ChristmasFluff · 30/10/2025 08:07

My two are 'Wichita Lineman' by Glen Campbell, first heard on Radio 2 when I was a very little kid, and then 'Things Behind the Sun' by Nick Drake, when I was in my 20s and living in a goth house.

Both just the most beautiful things I'd ever heard. And they still are.

MrsCatE · 30/10/2025 08:21

Ooh - too many and some lovely reminders! Probably, given OP's directive re first hearing of, top would be Bruce Springsteen and 'Darkness at the edge of Town'. 'Creep', Radiohead and 'Crazy in Love' - Beyonce - which I think is the ultimate 'Pop Song' apart from anything by the 'RAMONES'!

PetuniaT · 30/10/2025 09:02

Mrs Potter's Lullaby by Counting Crows

Oh yes it would be nice if I said which song 🤦🏼‍♀️

it was Eve & Paradise Lost by Bastille

What a very odd song!
Not helped that all the YT versions I can find are sung by a man, when it is so clearly a woman's song.

Absolutely lovely btw. I shall have to listen to more of Bastille. Thank you for introducing me to them 💐

My "stopped in my tracks moment" track is Pie Jesu sung by All Angels

1952VincentBlackLightning · 30/10/2025 09:30

Where is my mind - Pixies

A New England - Kirsty MacColl

Dinner at eight - Rufus Wainwright

Our mutual friend - Divine Comedy

More than this - Roxy Music

Coming up close - Til Tuesday. This was on a compilation tape given to me at 15 and long-lost. Took me years to track it down again. What a beautiful song.

Also the song in my user name 🙂

When love turns to lies by Chris Rea

littleblackcat1 · 30/10/2025 11:11

Just listening to another one…

Howard Jones New Song.

They all seem to kick off with the wow factor and enthralling originality.

SilverVixen101 · 30/10/2025 11:20

Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana
Rez - Underworld
Common People - Pulp
Lay Back In the Sun - Spiritualized

Crazy by Gnarls Barkley - heard it in a shop and had to stop dead to listen to it

ColdLittleHeart · 30/10/2025 11:52

The New Basement Tapes
When I get my hands on you

First heard the song on a train on my way to see the man I’d fallen for. Whenever i listen to it all the lovely feelings of that time come flooding back. Magic!

Heavenly Day by Party Griffin

It was on a Netflix show, The Haunting of Hill House and I was mesmerised by it

Hi Ren by Ren Gill.

blew me away.

Oh this is a good one, Ren is a genius when it comes to lyrics

Crudd99 · 30/10/2025 12:05

Paranoid Black Sabbath.

MsStyles · 30/10/2025 12:08

Ed Sheeran for most of mine and although I like his music I wouldn’t say I’m a big fan or anything.

small bump and supermarket flowers make me cry every time. I don’t even think I’ve been able to listen to supermarket flowers all the way through as it’s too painful. Small bump reminds me of my losses.

a recent song I heard online that made me chuckle when I listened to the lyrics was Ed’s A Little More. Anyone with an annoying ex should listen to that one it’s quality.

Homehelper · 30/10/2025 12:10

Fast car by Tracey.... damn I've forgotten her surname

Lay Back In the Sun - Spiritualized

Yes, Common People! A scream of rage dressed up as a bouncy pop song.
