Was listening to some music today and after my playlist was finished Spotify went off on its own little algorithm-y journey, and I suddenly found myself listening to a song so beautiful I had it on repeat for about an hour. That sort of thing happens to me very rarely, so I thought I’d see if anyone else could recommend songs that have struck them in a similar way.

Something in Red - Lorrie Morgan.
On an earlier post I put some 1960s songs. Two have been squashed by the remastering process. All kinds of sounds added to a Beatles track. Bastards!!!
They have taken away the rawness of Love Me Do and replaced Pete Best with an out of control drum machine.

TonTonMacoute · 28/10/2025 22:37

Jockey Full of Bourbon by Tom Waits.

It's used in the opening sequence of Jim Jarmusch's film Down by Law, showing the extreme poverty in southern US states. Just wow.

IfalldownbutIgetupagain · 28/10/2025 22:38

And one piece of classical music - Pachelbel canon , absolutely beautiful

IsItBeesThoughLooshkin · 28/10/2025 22:39

Oh and Waltz #2 by Elliott Smith. It’s like a punch in the chest.

wheretheheckissummer · 28/10/2025 22:39

Scrolling through Tiktock a few months ago and came across a song called Hi Ren. Never heard anything like it, went on to listen to more of him and I got hooked.

Chumbawomble · 28/10/2025 22:40

Bring Me to Life by Evanescence, heard in HMV. Bought the album and still love it years later.

Me and my boyfriend of a few months were listening(snogging) to Sunday night Pick of the Pops when he pulled away looked into my eyes and we both said 'Wow, what was that'
We'd just heard Something in the air by Thunderclap Newman.
I was at school, he was at Art College, we were always broke but we managed to put together about 48p, we'd only just 'gone decimal', and bought it the next day.
Reader, I married him and we occasionally ask Alexa to play it for us. Smile

The summer I was doing A levels and thinking about heading off to uni, the song The Call by Regina Spektor was in a film and I remember it was the first time I really stopped and thought about leaving all my friends and family behind and moving to somewhere new. I then had a repeat experience at the end of that summer at a music festival listening to Caledonia by Ruth Notman and that one did set me off blubbering as I was there with said friends and feeling very fragile and emotional anyway!

A bit later, just for the sheer potency of raw heartbreak, was Snuff by Slipknot.

there are more but those ones stand out as proper stopped me in my tracks and couldn’t really think about anything else after listening to them!

BlindTipsy · 28/10/2025 22:45

Soon you'll get better by Taylor Swift. Was just the right (or wrong) song at the time I heard it for the first time. Made me cry so much but was quite cathartic

Bloozie · 28/10/2025 22:21

Obsessed with Daisy Jones & the Six. Yes.

The whole Aurora album is fantastic, for a band that technically doesn’t exist!

Lilsoph · 28/10/2025 22:45

Go now -the moody blues. Just one of many.

saltandvinegarchipsticks · 28/10/2025 22:46

When Doves Cry by Prince. Was walking across a campsite in France and it was a perfect summer evening. Amazing song and lyrics.

That was playing when I lost my virginity.

Only Women Bleed by Alice Cooper. Heard it on Radio Luxembourg back in the day. Also Radar Love by Golden Earring (same era).

More recently, Violet by Hole, as sung by Kitty on Riot Women - so good!
