Was listening to some music today and after my playlist was finished Spotify went off on its own little algorithm-y journey, and I suddenly found myself listening to a song so beautiful I had it on repeat for about an hour. That sort of thing happens to me very rarely, so I thought I’d see if anyone else could recommend songs that have struck them in a similar way.

Fields of gold, sung by Eva Cassidy. Goose bumps, every time.
The first time I heard The Smiths was a life defining moment (and I still love them).

Efrogwraig · 28/10/2025 22:48

Help me - Joni Mitchell
You - Bonnie Raitt
I keep coming back to you - Beth Neilson Chapman
Common People - Pulp

Feist 1234 - thought it was catchy and happy when I first heard it (early 20s at the time). Then learned it was about divorce and it's actually pretty dark.

I was so intrigued by the lyrics and kinda knew as an 'proper' adult I'd 'get it' and it worried me 'old teenage hopes are alive at your door' - like I say I was barely out of my teenage years.

'Money can't buy you back the love that you had then' - as an adult that really stings.

It kind of had a profound impact on me - knowing I did actually have a lot to learn and how depressing it all seemed. Sort of an awakening that falling in love probably wasn't going to be a fairytale and you may wind up as someone in her 40s dancing to a band because you left your husband to go back to the teenager you once were - seemed unfathomable at the time.

It's just a song that keeps hitting harder every decade that passes.

First time I heard La Macarena - I just knew I was going to be destined to request and dance to it at every wedding, office party and festive occasion after ten glasses of Prosecco, for the rest of my life.

The one about losing a dog that I really can't listen to is Old Shep by Elvis Presley - it makes me cry!

Me and my boyfriend of a few months were listening(snogging) to Sunday night Pick of the Pops when he pulled away looked into my eyes and we both said 'Wow, what was that'
We'd just heard Something in the air by Thunderclap Newman.
I was at school, he was at Art College, we were always broke but we managed to put together about 48p, we'd only just 'gone decimal', and bought it the next day.
Reader, I married him and we occasionally ask Alexa to play it for us. Smile

Oh my goodness this. I remember that summer so well.

Athlete - wires - didn’t really register with me at all in the noughties but DS was a NICU baby and it still stops me in my tracks nearly 6 years later (first night of your life, curled up on your own….)

Bruno Mars - count on me - again another song which didn’t register with me at all until we lost my BIL to suicide and now the lyrics just make me so very sad

I’m so sorry for what you’ve gone through.

Athlete’s Wires also really got to me after a wobble with our second. Stunning song.

5dollah · 28/10/2025 22:54

Whipping Boy - She's the only one for me. I was a huge Whipping Boy fan in the 90s.

Weird Fishes/Arpeggi - Radiohead. The first time I heard it, I was listening on my headphones on a walk and I had to stop just to breathe. It's just beautiful.

Mine was 15 Steps!
