Trans woman in Riot Women! WTF?

OneBadKitty · 18/10/2025 19:59

I usually love anything by Sally Wainwright, but what was she thinking by have a trans-woman in a band called Riot Women that is supposed to be full of menopausal women singing about HRT and other female related issues?

Why are you saying pronouns can't be changed?

It's basic spelling and grammar. Anyone can decide to change anything for themselves, you could decide that you spell words completely differently to other people or use them incorrectly but you shouldn't expect others to agree with you or go along with it.

But you can change pronouns.

Language evolves.

Other languages have evolved different pronouns.

The only barrier for you is your mindset. You can choose to use people’s preferred pronouns. Or not.

No, you can change language but you can't expect others to to the same. I'll stick to the correct use of nouns, adjectives and pronouns. You can do as you wish but try to be tolerant of people who won't go along with it.

I’ll be as tolerant as you.

'Fck TERFs and fck TRAs'

Why fuck terfs? Terfs are women who don't want men in female only places. They don't wish harm on trans, they don't spout violence they just say men can't change sex. TRAs on the other hand constantly spout hate and incite violence against women 'decapitate terfs' 'burn terfs' etc. How the 2 very different groups present and express themselves are poles apart.

'I’ll be as tolerant as you'

I'm 100% tolerant of men and women dressing as they wish.

I've never engaged in debate on Mumsnet before and I don’t know what compelled me on this occasion other than I love Sally Wainwright and wanted to defend her position as a writer. A few thoughts before I go.

There are some loud and persistent voices on here who I don’t believe care one bit about women’s rights but who are essentially bullies for whom trans people are the latest easy target. 30 years ago their kind would have been laying in to the gays. 60 years ago it would have been people like my dad, who asked nothing of this country and - in the face of horrible racism - produced a fine family who are massive contributors to this society.

If these posters cared about women’s’ rights, they’d be putting their energy into addressing the real threats to women, like domestic abuse, rape and violence as a result of toxic masculinity. But that’s too much like hard work, so trans people are low hanging fruit for lazy keyboard warriors. While the (middle class) women hate on trans, their (working class) male counterparts hate on the immigrants. It all comes from the same root: dissatisfaction with their lives, lack of empathy/connection and not knowing who they really are.

I strongly believe that transgenderism is biologically based and a relatively rare naturally occurring phenomenon, that can be found throughout history and in ancient and indigenous cultures, rather than some modern western construct. They’re here, they’ve always been here and have rights like anyone else.

I believe transgender women are the victims of toxic men in the same way that women are and that there has been a disruption caused by twisted men who take on a transgender identity for their own advantage (prison system is one example). My own (albeit limited) experience of transgender people is that they too have doubts about aspects of modern transgender ideology, but according to this thread, all transgender women are predatory perverts.

Fck TERFs and fck TRAs. Let’s look at what connects us. Live and let live.

I strongly believe that transgenderism is biologically based and a relatively rare naturally occurring phenomenon
I would be very interested to see the evidence for this.

As long as they aren't cast in a minor role in a popular series on TV?

A film set isn't a female only place but most of the posters on this thread object to a trans woman being in that space.

Precisely. The list of “women’s spaces” is apparently growing.

Exactly - this isn't a female only place, is it. As you say, it's a film set.
So when it comes down to it, some are against people existing as trans in the first place as in their minds, "they're all a potential threat."
Even when it comes to being represented on telly they'd rather they weren't, that they weren't acknowledged, that they weren't there in the first place because just knowing about trans people adds to social contagion and we all might "catch trans" or something.
All views that have been expressed on this thread alone.

Context. In a band <granted very small presence but there nonetheless> about women's issues. The actor even said in an interview as he takes hrt he can relate.

So yes I've no issue with trans people in dramas but their role should be appropriate.

BIossomtoes · 24/10/2025 09:30

And what would “appropriate” look like?

Where did I say ALL women?

I specifically said ‘hates women without his approved opinions’.

You feel safe from his hostility because you hold his approved opinions, clearly. Well done you.

It sounds like you are comfortable with his violent language being aimed at SOME women.

And yes, ‘Fuck Terfs’ IS violent language aimed at women despite the utterly desperate claim from PP that it is not violent or threatening.

I think the T shirt is rude, but no more so than refusing to use someone's preferred pronouns. The latter is a small courtesy that we can do people (including people who wish to be referred to as 'they' and yet according to people on this thread, the world would end, women would lose their rights to absolutely everything and the apocalypse would be upon us if we were a little bit polite).

If you want to look at a country where the rights of women are being trampled into the mud, look at the US - and it isn't trans people driving that. This laser focus on Trans As The Root Of All Evil is dangerous.

You mean a band that is completely fictional, made up by a writer, and the roles played by people the actor wrote to be in them.

You're arguing about a fictional creation where the writer has purposefully written characters, which include a Trans person.

It's MADE UP, FICTIONAL, MAKE BELIEVE, A STORY. there is NOTHING remotely inappropriate about it, because the writer WROTE IT THAT WAY.

Not a role about a band singing about women's menopausal issues?

There's trans people in soaps I believe, a trans woman won Big Brother years ago. No one is saying they should not be on the telly.

I didn’t ask what it wouldn’t look like, you’ve been very clear about that. This thread is crammed with posts saying they shouldn’t be on TV, including a couple saying they won’t watch anything involving a trans woman. 🤷‍♀️

Gloriia · 24/10/2025 11:57

'I didn’t ask what it wouldn’t look like'

What? You asked 'what would "appropriate" look like' so i told you and helpfully gave examples. There are trans people on various shows there was one on Baby Reindeer too

'The latter is a small courtesy that we can do people (including people who wish to be referred to as 'they' and yet according to people on this thread, the world would end, women would lose their rights to absolutely everything and the apocalypse would be upon us if we were a little bit polite'

A courtesy? It is incorrect and this alleged courtesy then opens the doors for accessing women only areas as we are seeing on the news every single day.

A courtesy would be to respect women's views and opinions.

Chinapattern · 24/10/2025 11:59

But not all women have the same views and opinions so how does that work? Respecting yours is disrespecting mine. And the proof that people think trans women shouldn’t be on TV is yet another of those posts directly above this.

Darker · 24/10/2025 12:36

The band is what brings all these women together, in their common, and different, experiences of being women.

It’s not about a band.

From the ending I would say there are plans for another series, which is not going to about a band either.

Well you have an impressive commitment to defending and minimising violent language towards women, I’ll give you that.

Try replacing ‘terfs’ with a different word that references that actor in the phrase ‘Fuck t’ and I’d lay money on the fallout being seen from space. So much so I wouldn’t even dare write it.

It is not polite to require people to use wrong sex pronouns when referring to a person generally not even present. That demand is soo last decade.

If you want to look at a country where the rights of women are being trampled into the mud, look at the US

There was a pretty concerted effort under the Democrats to remove women’s rights and words. Some women are still suffering from the effects of that - the 70 yr old woman banned from her local swimming pool for objecting to a young man who identifies as trans who was ‘helping’ young girls change out of their swimming costumes, or the women incarcerated with actual male murderer and rapists, or the young woman with a brain injury after being spiked in a volleyball match by a male player who identified as trans. Countless women in America are suffering directly because of the trans issue. The trans lobby even hampered the campaign to protect abortion rights in law by making it about themselves and muddying the messaging.

This laser focus on Trans As The Root Of All Evil is dangerous. No one said that.

This desperate need you have to pretend the trans issue doesn’t cause harm to women and children is dangerous.

I'm still watching it and enjoying it but just a bit irked by it! Don't want to put any of you off from watching as it's otherwise really good.

Well then why the AIBU rant?

BIossomtoes · 25/10/2025 08:27

How very selective you are @BundleBoogie. Presumably you haven’t noticed that a large proportion of women in the US can no longer access abortion? Your laser focus on trans women to the exclusion of everything else affecting women’s rights is very unhealthy.

I think that more women in the US are suffering due to the adjudicated sex offender in the White House and the stripping away of a woman's right to choose whether to continue with an unwanted or unviable pregnancy. Women's lives are being put at risk and they are even denied health care to deal with a miscarriage due to a belief that the woman probably tried to abort her unborn child. What about the poor woman who was brain dead but kept alive for months against the family's wishes until they could deliver the baby? I don't know how you can even think of holding up the current US government as a bastion of women's rights. It's like a sick joke.
