Trans woman in Riot Women! WTF?

OneBadKitty · 18/10/2025 19:59

I usually love anything by Sally Wainwright, but what was she thinking by have a trans-woman in a band called Riot Women that is supposed to be full of menopausal women singing about HRT and other female related issues?

Where do we draw the line? I presume that you would like a ban on employing a trans actor in a female role on the BBC even if it's a really tiny peripheral one, with no back story or evangelising?

Other posters have said that they would object to a trans actor being cast in any role, unless the role was about a male to a female transition and it was shown in a very negative light.

The mantra has always been that the objections to trans women are about their access to women only spaces and are just about safety. I don't think any women were put at risk during the filming of Riot Women so the strong reaction on here seems to be due to a visceral dislike of trans women.

This isn’t the case. It is also about appropriation of women’s words and the huge push using television and other means over the last few years in an attempt to normalise and sometimes shame women into accepting men who identify ‘as women’ is partly how we have reached the point where those in authority think it is perfectly acceptable to use female prisoners to ‘socialise’ violent male prisoners (often sex offenders) who call themselves women.

Contributing to the message that women should accept some men as being ‘women’ just like them is harmful to all women. This show has made itself part of that.

It’s just a shame some can’t see it.

BIossomtoes · 23/10/2025 09:33

You mean it’s a shame that, despite all your efforts, you’ve failed to coerce us all into agreeing with you. I don’t think it’s a shame at all. I’m very pleased.

Notsofastnow · 23/10/2025 10:15

BundleBoogie · 23/10/2025 08:01

No. The man playing the backing singer character in the programme is hostile to women.

You’re being obtuse and ridiculous. Get a grip.

The transwoman wore a t-shirt saying fuck terfs. That’s not hostile to women - that’s hostile to terfs, and frankly is pretty justified given the volume of terfy noise on this thread directed against a trans actor for playing a trans part.

It looks like Sally Wainwright wanted it to be a trans-inclusive ‘space’, even though the key focus is on the experience of cis women.

I’m sure she could have included a storyline for Miranda about the violence that many trans women experience, but maybe Miranda’s quiet presence and inclusion in this group is the story Sally wants for her.

Edited

Why would she want to put that in a show intended to be about mid life menopausal women?

If she wants to make a show about ‘trans’, she should, but she was supposedly making a show about women.

Thanks for reinforcing the point that some people think women shouldn’t have anything that doesn’t involve men who call themselves women.

I have tried to coerce anyone. This is a public forum for discussion. I make my points and you make yours. That’s how it works.

SW has written a part for a trans actor. A trans actor is playing that part. What next? Cancelling Shakespeare because Juliet is 14?? Shylock's part looks dubious to modern eyes. Elder abuse in King Lear. Please note that Juliet would have been played by a male when written. The premise of this thread is absurd. Unless SW states publicly that she was forced to shoehorn a trans actor into a production where he/she has no valid part, perhaps we could leave her to get on with her job ie making entertaining Sunday night tv with broad appeal at which she is extremely successful.

Exactly
But no, they must automatically be "shoehorned in" or "box ticking" or whatever.
When the reality is that when writers write, they write characters from all walks of life, circumstances and backgrounds.
So it makes sense to have a wide range of characters to represent today's society.

PurpleParakeet · 23/10/2025 10:28

@BundleBoogie I am a woman and very happy to see a transwoman in the cast. Her presence doesn't detract from anything the other women have, or take away their limelight.

The only thing that spoils it for me is knowing that there will be women that will try to use it to whip up an anti-trans narrative.

It's still a show about women. There's no "supposedly" about it. There are other male characters in the show. None of those detract from the story about women!

It's like if someone wore a t-shirt saying "fuck racists' and someone complained (NOT conflating racism with "GC" before anyone starts)
They'd be saying fuck racists
Not women Confused
Men and women are TERFS. Men and women can both be racists too.
If you're not a racist, or a TERF and you're a woman, they're not on about you, are they?!

Who’s “fawning”? All I’ve seen here is a desire to treat trans women with respect.

Darker · 23/10/2025 11:01

It seems that there are people who just don’t believe that transgender people exist, only men pretending to be women and vice versa.

There is no point in arguing as the premise is fundamentally different.

Apart from PPs claiming that on this thread to defend him being there I haven’t seen any evidence that it was specifically written for a man unless you have?

I haven't claimed it wasxwritten for a man. It was written for an actor. Thank you for your interest.

This, but also writers include characters who illustrate the story they want to tell. So it’s not only about representation/background colour, it’s that this character tells part of the story and adds context. Nothing is arbitrary in scriptwriting and a writer as skilled at her craft as SW knows exactly what she’s doing. People who say the character is shoehorned in, or there was coercion at play, are ridiculous.

I think one of the things I just can't square is why any time a minority - not just a trans person - appears on TV it's "shoehorned" / "shoved down our throats" / "made to for box-ticking".

The idea that people who are different from the norm exist, in the main fairly quietly and just going about their lives, and that sometimes this appears on TV, just doesn't seem to click.

Who is 'fawning' over the trans woman playing Miranda? I am saying that it is a very small part, they aren't one of the main female characters, they haven't ruined the whole series and that I doubt very much that Sally Wainwright was bullied into including a trans character against her will.

Your visceral feeling is one of disgust. I don't feel the same way as you.

So in your mind it’s perfectly acceptable for a man to publicly express hostile and dehumanising sentiments to women.

Women expressing an opinion on the inclusion of a man who calls himself a woman in a show supposedly about women are called cunts and terfs but yes, we’re the bad guys.

He bought that t shirt ahead of this thread btw but nice attempt to blame us for his obvious hostility.

Sorry but 😁 my Chandler Bing side says " can you BE any more passive aggressive?!" lol
No that doesn't mean I'm police toning you before you decide to twist or misunderstand..... just that's where my brain went to. The Chan Chan Man 😁

Weirdly you claim you are not conflating racists with terfs but then do exactly that.

What is your understanding of a ‘terf’.

The idea that people who are different from the norm exist,

You’ve inadvertently highlighted the issue here. This is not ‘the norm’ for the vast majority of women. There are very many aspects of life that are ‘the norm’ for women of a certain age that are not explored nearly enough. Hanging out with a young trans identifying male will be a rare occurrence for most.

Hence the observation that he has been shoehorned in seems perfectly valid.
