What are Hamas playing at?

It’s deeply worrying that Hamas haven’t returned all the dead hostages as agreed. I’ve seen comments saying it’s an impossible task given how Gaza has been reduced to rubble. But if that’s the case, they would have known they had lost the bodies. So why did they agree to return them if they knew they weren’t able to do so?

If that were the goal it could have been achieved within the week.

And what do you think the world reaction to that would have been?

Alantraitor · 15/10/2025 10:14

There is no actual line but it is well known where the IDF soldiers have retreated to and that they are not to be approached by civilians.

The Palestinians were shouted at not to come any further but they did. So were perceived as a potential threat and who knows really if they were armed or not. Even if they weren't the IDF wouldn't know that as they walked towards them, ignoring their calls to stop.

Israelis aren’t allowed to defend themselves though. Have you forgotten the rule?

That poor Palestinian woman, I wonder if they ever found out who she was?

And lo. Fucking morons.

What are Hamas playing at?

They have a very complex, very robust tunnel system. This keeps them safe as well as their ammunition, medical and food supplies.
They didn't keep the hostages in a building overground!

To be honest why would they keep them anywhere?

What would they hold onto the hostages dead bodies for?

Were they expecting to hand them back at some point?

Alantraitor · 15/10/2025 10:19

NikkiPotnick · 15/10/2025 10:15

Then don't consider it. It doesn't much matter how they were capable of doing it, only that they did.

To reiterate, of the 7 identified hostage bodies released so far, at least 4 have been dead since October 2023. Which makes it very clear that Hamas indeed have ways to keep hostage remains safe and deliver them. If backed sufficiently into a corner.

I agree and they signed a peace deal that implied they could return most if not all of the dead hostages, only saying that some would take a bit longer to return.

But they've only returned 7 out of 28 - maybe it will be 11 by the end of today if that goes smoothly.

They are playing power games with no care for threatening the ceasefire.

Because they have value.

The Israelis will exchange dozens of Palestinian prisoners for each dead hostage. That's partially why they stole so many of the people they killed on 7th October. Because they know.

SteakBakesAndHotTakes · 15/10/2025 10:20

elprup · 15/10/2025 08:21

Then why bother agreeing to the deal in the first place I wonder? Just to buy a few days of time?

They have just had 2000 prisoners released and returned to them as part of the deal, which would have been a draw, but they also benefit hugely from war in terms of aid and PR, which is the draw of not cooperating.

The Israelis want their dead back. The Jewish faith considers burial of the whole body to be very important. Hamas knows this.

KimberleyClark · 15/10/2025 10:15

You're missing the point. The accusation is that Israel just want Gaza and to take the whole land. Well they actually could have done that decades ago couldnt they.

If people believe that Israel is the baddie and is just taking land willy nilly (and there is some truth to that) and orchestrating wars/violence and using that as excuses for land grabs, well they've had the opportunity

But they havent

So that is not the aim.

Yes, that's exactly my point.

It's extremely naive to think Hamas weren't capable of holding onto hostage remains for the duration of the conflict, because that is literally what they have done. I wouldn't be surprised if they genuinely can't return every single one, but it's evident that they had more than the 4 they gave back on Monday and were trying their luck.

Cheeks4970 · 15/10/2025 10:24

I am staunchly pro-Palestinian. And no, I will not be silent now, we will keep going until Palestine is free and the occupation has ended. I'm shocked at how many of you are willing to defend what Israel has done. If there was no occupation, there would be no resistance. I am wondering if any of you have seen the harrowing testimonies of the Palestinian hostages that have been returned and the treatment they have suffered (kidnapped from Gaza without charge and held in prisons). You all need to wake up and see who the real terrorists of the world are.

Rickrolypoly · 15/10/2025 10:08

There is no line though FFS. They were unarmed.
Hardly surprising though, the IDF have been shooting civilians for a long time now.

Imagine this @Rickrolypoly

Hamas know that IDF will likely shoot at anyone who crosses into their zone.
Hamas know that the media will report on this & people like you & I will discuss it in online discussions & social media.
End of the story?
Civilian lives are lost and we are playing part of Hamas’ game.

TicklishMauveSquid · 15/10/2025 10:27

SugarPlumpFairyCakes · 15/10/2025 10:03

Very very dumb of them then. These hostages alive or dead are political leverage.

They have endless tunnels under schools and hospitals to store bodies and hostages.

Tunnels to hide in. Hide behind hospital patients and school children.

Weren’t the bodies/body parts of dead hostages divvied up between the various terrorist factions? I read the PIJ (Palestinian Islamic Jihad) had some and another faction I can’t remember the name of had some. Then Hamas had the majority.

The decapitated head of a 19 year old soldier was being touted for sale to rival factions for $10,000 at one point, having been kept in the freezer of an ice cream truck where it eventually retrieved from by the IDF.

https://www.timesofisrael.com/father-of-fallen-soldier-terrorist-decapitated-my-son-tried-to-sell-head-for-10000/amp/

You could imagine them, that it would be difficult to locate all the bodies/body parts if different factions have gone off with them like hyenas picking off bits of a kill.

I do wonder if all the pro-Pals who barely disguise their support of Hamas (and the Palestinians who support them), actually fully comprehend the level of depravity among Palestinians and it’s not a new thing - Ramallah lynching anyone?

Who knows. This is a nihilistic, anti-Semitic, homophobic, misogynist, violent group with plenty of money, re-framed as a plucky bunch of freedom fighters for gullible westerners.
The tunnels are very sophisticated, though, and I gather most were kept there.

SugarPlumpFairyCakes · 15/10/2025 10:39

I don't think anti-Israel sentiment has anything to do with sympathies for Hamas, but for a civilian population that has seen its home completely obliterated.

I can't get my head round the land grabs or the violence from Israel, but that doesn't mean I support Hamas.

Well, being anti Israel, for many, includes the language and claims of Hamas.
Some more wild than others, from what I see on placards and stickers.
They didn't keep hostages in the Holiday Inn, so the excuse of "rubble" doesn't fly. That's the experience of the poor Palestinians. Hamas are well protected.
