Did anyone read the very interesting article by Matthew Syed (sorry if behind a paywall) - Sunday Times: 'One thing has been holding back the Middle East for centuries':
https://www.thetimes.com/comment/columnists/article/middle-east-religious-fanaticism-iran-kcvh5knn3

"The Middle East was once the centre of the intellectual world. Then it went into reverse. The problem then, as now, is Islamic fundamentalism. No peace or prosperity is possible until the madrassas and other machines of indoctrination are confronted"

One thing has been holding back the Middle East for centuries

Religious fanaticism has been catastrophic for a region that was once the intellectual hub of the world

What about Christian fundamentalist, who also want women to cover up, submit to their husbands, and be more “modest”.

What about Jewish fundamentalist, who also make women cover up, and won’t sit next to women they don’t know on Planes & Buses?

Christianity also suppressed science and technology for centuries.

Good old fashioned misogyny runs deep through many religions.

I agree! They all need to be called out together with Islamic fundamentalists.

Dweetfidilove · 14/10/2025 00:41

Lobas · 14/10/2025 00:32

Exactly…..proving my point. The moment facts come up, the focus shifts to mocking or dodging instead of engaging. Watching the mental gymnastics to avoid the obvious is honestly the most predictable part of these debates. LOLZ

Are you well?

I asked a question- see the punctuation mark (?)... You found it highly amusing apparently... laughing emoji and all.
All I needed was a response, then perhaps we could discuss further or your answer may have been sufficient, requiring no further exchanges.

Check who mocked whom - 🪞.

Scorpiogirly you’re doing too much. Relax.

Please do elaborate.

Libertylawn · 14/10/2025 00:45

I will pick this up properly tomorrow

but but but.

I’ve known Matthew Syed for over 20 years and he is solidly a good egg, brave in the face of international shadows, and always gets the round in.

connie26 · 14/10/2025 00:36

Totally agree. It feels like Islamic fundamentalism is rapidly growing and although I'm sure many Muslims don't want the future to be that way, they are frightened to speak up.

No, they're not.

What are you on about? I’m British and I don’t see anything apart from people like you trying to make crass and boring generalisations about loads of people they’ve never met.

This is not about being British it’s about Muslim bashing.

Why is mentioning Islamic fundamentalism Muslim bashing.
Are you trying to shut down conversation.

Pugzy · 14/10/2025 01:09

I feel Islam is the new TWAW
The 'be kind' brigade on the left are focused on that now and its the same situation.
Can't talk about trans issues = transphobia
Can't talk about issues in Islam = Islamaphobia

And there ARE issues with Islam that directly contradict Western standards and make Islam incompatible with Western culture

That’s a bit rude.

Cottageatthetopofthemountain · 14/10/2025 01:15

Why must you be apologist for a religion that hold women in contempt. Why don't you support women instead instead of supporting men perpetuating that religion. Oh wait it's because you hold women in contempt too.

Meadowfinch · 14/10/2025 01:16

It is only possible to have reasoned discussion with someone who is reasonable.
That doesn't include any fundamentalist of any faith.

He's wasting his breath.

What issues are those?
Christianity also has issues that are incompatible with any decent persons standards, but no one seems to want to talk about that, given there are far more Christians in the U.K. than Muslims, perhaps we start with that?

Theres not 43000 Christian fundamentalists on the terror watch list in the country.

Let’s talk about what is a burningly obvious and immediate danger to life.

Edited

Where do you get that information from

Sorry I misread your comment as if there were 43 000 Christian Fundamentalists on the list.

Jewish fundamentalists don't blow kids up at concerts, drive cars into Christmas markets, blow up tubes and buses though do they?

The cognitive dissonance of the lefties is mind blowing

Quite.
@ExtraOnions your post doesn’t even touch the sides of the dangers of Islamic fundamentalism.

IsEveryUserNameBloodyTaken · 14/10/2025 01:46

BluntPlumHam · 14/10/2025 00:15

Yawn. Another muslim bashing thread pretending to care about women’s rights and all that other jazz. There are over two billion of them vast majority of them minding their own business and just surviving like the rest of us. If fundamentalism or whatever new word we are going to use next ‘islamisim’ was new one I heard that made me chuckle was really a widespread issue as you claim it to be then we’d all feel it given how many there are.

Yawn.
Another deflection misdirection post trying to shut down peoples legitimate concerns.

Yes they are.
You seem to want to shut down conversation when it doesn’t agree with your agenda.
Why is that ?

Maybe not in the UK (yet), but White/Christian/Right Wing fundamentalism is resulting in acts of terrorism the world over that we don't call acts of terrorism. Just a few examples below:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pittsburgh_synagogue_shooting
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wisconsin_Sikh_temple_shooting
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011_Norway_attacks
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quebec_City_mosque_shooting
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christchurch_mosque_shootings
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/January_2017_Melbourne_car_attack
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gay_bar_shootings_in_Virginia

...oh, wait, there are some in the UK too https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2024_Southport_stabbings
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1999_London_nail_bombings

It isn't racist to be concerned about violent fundamentalism, but it is racist to only be concerned about it in one group.

DarkForces · 14/10/2025 06:58

Fundamentalism of every kind, not just religious always seems to result in evil. Anyone without doubt and a belief in grey areas should be kept far away from power.

Pigeonpoodle · 14/10/2025 07:08

steadyinvolvement · 13/10/2025 22:00

This is gross 🤮
why is this acceptable? All form of this rhetoric is dangerous. Conspiracy theories about religious groups and races is how ww2 started.

antisemitism , Islamophobia should be called out at all costs

I tell what you is gross, a prophet whose held up as the epitome of virtue who marries a six-year old girl, and consummates that marriage when she is nine….. and liberals saying we have to be tolerant of this abomination!

Sure, other religions have their issues, but they tend to permit much more flexible interpretations of their holy scriptures…

If I burnt a Bible, some people would just get a bit upset…. If I burnt a Koran, I’d quite likely end up dead.

ChainStress · 14/10/2025 07:15

Bambamhoohoo · 13/10/2025 22:48

💯 this. I never understand these articles and can only assume they’re designed encouraging outrage for practicality.

who would challenge fundamentalism across the Middle East? Does MS think there is a world wide government who can do these things that none of us know about?

it’s quite colonial really.

What is “colonial” is the rapid domination of a new culture on western society. Let’s not sleep walk into a society that we don’t want

AgnesX · 14/10/2025 07:18

OP, how do you propose to do that, by whom, and what do you think the outcome is likely to be?

What issues are those?

The Reformation and Enlightenment made Christianity a far more flexible and tolerant religion with a huge diversity of beliefs and perspectives… yes, there are some nutcases, there always will be.

This isn’t the case in Islam… where the penalty for leaving the religion or blasphemy is literally death (even ex-Jehovah’s Witnesses are just shunned if they leave!) and many countries practice that today.

Islam is a cult of momentous proportions based on medieval barbarism - it should be called out as such. It is not the same as Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism etc.

ThatSpryShaker · 14/10/2025 07:21

Do you challenge fundamental Christianity? Your American cousins could use some of that challenging.
