To think that it's about time islamic fundamentalism is dissected and challenged

Did anyone read the very interesting article by Matthew Syed (sorry if behind a paywall) - Sunday Times: 'One thing has been holding back the Middle East for centuries':
https://www.thetimes.com/comment/columnists/article/middle-east-religious-fanaticism-iran-kcvh5knn3

"The Middle East was once the centre of the intellectual world. Then it went into reverse. The problem then, as now, is Islamic fundamentalism. No peace or prosperity is possible until the madrassas and other machines of indoctrination are confronted"

One thing has been holding back the Middle East for centuries

Religious fanaticism has been catastrophic for a region that was once the intellectual hub of the world

Which demonstrates that it's not a good idea to have it within a liberal democracy.

Quite.

YANBU.

But the suicidal, mind boggling alliance between Islamism and the useful idiots in the left wing will continue.

This is a good summary.

A public conversation about this topic is long overdue. Equally, we need to push back against a similarly hateful right wing 'Evangelical' Christian movement. They are twin cheeks of the same backside.

BatchCookBabe · 13/10/2025 22:55

I agree @diddlysquatagain And according to your poll on here, so do many others.

MrsSkylerWhite · 13/10/2025 22:59

Every religion ought to be dissected and challenged.

What about Christian fundamentalist, who also want women to cover up, submit to their husbands, and be more “modest”.

What about Jewish fundamentalist, who also make women cover up, and won’t sit next to women they don’t know on Planes & Buses?

Christianity also suppressed science and technology for centuries.

Good old fashioned misogyny runs deep through many religions.

Jewish fundamentalists don't blow kids up at concerts, drive cars into Christmas markets, blow up tubes and buses though do they?

The cognitive dissonance of the lefties is mind blowing

Some do however evict and terrorise Palestinians from their own homes because they believe they're not 'settlers' but rather reclaiming the land God gave them. They're as bad as any other aggressive wingnuts.

It's incomprehensible.

Someone on the left please explain why Muslims are over represented in the prison population in this country. And no, you can’t hide behind racism because look at the data for Sikhs and Hindus

Some very serious conversations need to be had.

Or we could just make up excuses whilst more people are victimised….

What about, what about. The usual deflections.

Meanwhile Islamic fundamentalists (key word) are persecuting/slaughtering people who live around 6 hours away from us in Africa.

People are right to be concerned, it’s terrifying and horrifying.

That’s not surprising at all. It worries me that anyone expressing concerns is automatically branded racist.

scorpiogirly · 14/10/2025 00:04

What other religion or group of people would end the life of the rapist as well as the victims life?

converseandjeans · 14/10/2025 00:08

Blahdiblahblahr · 13/10/2025 22:24

Not challenged? What? The whole world including us has sanctions and the highest level of pressure possible against the Taliban. We literally invaded them and took over and tried to change things and it didn’t work.

As for FGM - do some research. Very much not a thing for one religious group. Occurs in a few places including some african tribal religions, parts of south asia and others. Terrible but pre-dates Islam.

Edited

@Blahdiblahblahr I honestly don’t hear much about women in these countries being badly treated. I’ve not heard of protests or seen links to raise funds. It feels like they have been abandoned. I don’t see people taking a coach to London to support Sudanese women - I’ve no clue what their flag even looks like. It’s 97% Muslim & this is their fate. It’s hardly like Holland or France is it?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Women_in_Sudan

I’m no expert on FGM but I work in a diverse secondary school & we do have girls who get sent ‘home’ then come back again. They have their education disrupted & they worry about being sent back or married off. We have to teach FGM to everyone but I’m 99% sure atheist, Catholic, Christian girls aren’t disappearing off to say France or Poland to have FGM performed on them - or to find a partner.

BluntPlumHam · 14/10/2025 00:15

Yawn. Another muslim bashing thread pretending to care about women’s rights and all that other jazz. There are over two billion of them vast majority of them minding their own business and just surviving like the rest of us. If fundamentalism or whatever new word we are going to use next ‘islamisim’ was new one I heard that made me chuckle was really a widespread issue as you claim it to be then we’d all feel it given how many there are.

I wonder if the dozen or more terrorism laws introduced in the last 25 years have anything to do with these stats?

If you can legislate against a particular group enough, you can increase their 'prison representation '.

That argument doesn’t really hold up. Terrorism offences make up less than 1% of the prison population, so those laws can’t explain the figures here. The vast majority of Muslim prisoners are serving sentences for non-terrorism offences and this trend existed long before most anti-terror laws were introduced.

but please carry on with the very creative excuses, highly amusing 😂

I think you mean the requirements to meet the definition of genocide have been redefined so the world’s only JEWISH State can be accused of meeting them.

Why would you think genocide requires a whole new definition and what do you think it is?

Will it get a new name as well because it only applies to the only Jewish State?

Exactly…..proving my point. The moment facts come up, the focus shifts to mocking or dodging instead of engaging. Watching the mental gymnastics to avoid the obvious is honestly the most predictable part of these debates. LOLZ

connie26 · 14/10/2025 00:36

Totally agree. It feels like Islamic fundamentalism is rapidly growing and although I'm sure many Muslims don't want the future to be that way, they are frightened to speak up.
