To think this mother is selfish and a bit of a knobhead?

A woman got on the bus this morning with a few kids. The youngest in a buggy had a toy with buttons that made sound effects. It was loud. This child did not stop pressing these buttons. I looked at the mother as if to say wtf but it didn't work. Aibu to think what is wrong with people? I wouldn't dream of letting my kid in an inside public space with such a toy.

You could try hypnotherapy?

What ? What would I pay for something to try to prevent something from upsetting me when it is common decency to not make unnecessary noise on public transport. I’m rarely on pt tbh other than on holidays but I will continue to call people out for their lack of manners.

TesChique · 12/10/2025 14:28

I assume you'd all be ok with a childless teenager playing music from their phone speaker out loud?

Or is it only motherhood that gives anti social behaviour a pass?

Happygolucky314 · 12/10/2025 00:00

Funnily enough everyone without children are entitled to a child free life not a child free world. OP could learn to drive and then wouldn’t have to share transport with children.. should stay in doors if she doesn’t want to encounter children.

You do realise, don’t you, that actual parents are on this thread saying she’s out of order, but you crack on and insult the childfree 🙄

TwinklyStork · 12/10/2025 15:19

It’s a very good point about teenagers playing music out loud on their phones on public transport. If that isn’t socially acceptable then neither should people have to listen to “the wheels on the bus” or any other babyish song being played out loud from an iPad or a horrible noisy children’s toy. Apparently it’s OK for parents to cause a public nuisance, though.
If parents can’t take their kids on a bus without causing this kind of nuisance then they need to learn to drive instead.

I’m a parent and I drive but when I’d been on the bus when my child was 1 I think I let her look out the window and spoke to her however the older generation and other mums were kind and spoke to my child and I assume most would apart from the snobs on mums net. It’s a child hardly a life threatening situation where they are playing albeit annoying. It wasn’t an insult or anything you all make a choice to be child free where as the ones who make a choice to be mothers make a choice to be mothers

sorry I don’t think it causing you serious emotional distress is normal. Hence when I suggested some treatment.

I agree it’s annoying. No one is expecting silence on the bus, and yes it’s tricky managing several kids at once, but that doesn’t make it acceptable to use super loud toys. You should be afforded as much consideration as some of the posters on here wish you to offer the mother.

Incidentally, I bet it was a V tech toy. That whole range can get in the bin. Whenever my child was given one, it quickly got “lost!”

Bet you are one of those beige mums 🙄

Fridgetapas · 12/10/2025 21:37

When my DS was a baby the only toy that would keep him happy and amused for a good while in the pram (fussy, colicky baby poor thing) was a baby Einstein star which would play classical music when you pressed the button.
Sometimes I needed to get stuff done out and about and sometimes the star came with us and to be honest I didn’t give a fuck if other people found it annoying for the few seconds or minutes I was near them.

Which is fine until it’s not just a few seconds and someone’s doing it in an enclosed space for half an hour, like a bus, a train, a cafe, and just no. You should give a fuck, because the world doesn’t revolve around your child.

No, because you deliberately lost bright, colourful toys that people had kindly given your child, and that they probably would have enjoyed playing with. That’s not good manners.

Still didn’t care. If people want silence they should stay in their houses or their cars.

As I said - only v tech toys. They don’t have volume controls and it wouldn’t have been fair to the neighbours as we were in a flat when my DD was the age they were appropriate for. Which is simply being considerate. Do you really believe that eschewing ONE range of crap and overly loud toys means my DD lives in beige surroundings? Honestly.

opencecilgee · 13/10/2025 07:20

This is why I carry ear pods. Stick em in and get a goof podcast ready

MaryBeardsShoes · 13/10/2025 07:23

What the fuck is up with these replies? Of course it’s unreasonable! The kid should have had a quiet toy. Plus, why do other people have to pay for her choice to have so many kids?! What is up with MN these days.

ZenNudist · 13/10/2025 07:33

There was a child with a loud hailer toy in a playground yesterday that had this incredibly loud woo woo woo woo woo woo woo woo noise and something like a muffled announcement noise. There was a marathon on nearby and I thought it was from that! People commented in the cafe how annoying it was. There's no way I'd let my children have such a toy in public. Yes we did all blame the parents.

People are rude.

SushiForMe · 13/10/2025 07:47

What is wrong with people?!
It is not a choice between noisy device / screen / screaming child. What about silent toys? Or books? Or having the child ln your lap and pointing out things outside? Etc

Lighteningstrikes · 13/10/2025 07:51

I wouldn’t have forced that on my worst enemy.
Imo she’s probably not very bright/slightly ignorant.

Lighteningstrikes · 13/10/2025 07:53

…or simply doesn’t give a sh@t

I think I would just stick my headphones on and not judge a poor mam of several young kids first thing on a morning.

‘Poor mam’? Why is anyone supposed to feel sympathy for her? Too right I judge people who allow their children to irritate and annoy others around them and expect others to tolerate their loud toys.

Because an active child isn’t going to be entertained by those things for long.

No child needs a screen. Some will be happier than others staying still but even active children will be entertained by sitting on a parent’s lap, playing peekaboo or similar game. Especially if they are used to it from an early age.
If you put a baby/toddler in front of a screen then of course when they are 2-3 it is much harder to keep them still as they want to screen and nothing else.

I think at the point that you're complaining about a child making a noise in a playground you've lost the plot.

theLadyWhoJumpsHigh · 13/10/2025 12:17

humptydumptyfelloff · 08/10/2025 08:42

Difficult one this.

without the toy I’m sure the child would have been not distracted and possibly shouting/crying so to be fair at least it’s abit of damage limitation there.

id rather hear a loud child’s toy and zone it out than people talking on loud speaker to their nearest and dearest all about their private life

I LOVE listening in on people's conversations. It helps journeys pass way more quickly.

and then OP probably would've complained because the child was laughing loudly.

Can't win.
