To think this mother is selfish and a bit of a knobhead?

A woman got on the bus this morning with a few kids. The youngest in a buggy had a toy with buttons that made sound effects. It was loud. This child did not stop pressing these buttons. I looked at the mother as if to say wtf but it didn't work. Aibu to think what is wrong with people? I wouldn't dream of letting my kid in an inside public space with such a toy.

I really couldn’t get worked up over it.

Would you prefer that the child was screaming? That was probably the alternative.

Rubbish

FateReset · 08/10/2025 09:24

It's inconsiderate. However, how often do you take the bus with several children, one in a buggy? 😆

Getting all the kids safely from A to B was probably her priority. Buses are a nightmare when you have a buggy.

She may not have noticed the toy until they were at the bus stop, by which time you can't swap it for a different one or a snack. Without child screaming instead.

Would you rather listen to child having a tantrum?

People complain about all sorts when you take kids on a bus. At least he wasn't watching loud videos on a tablet or screeching along to music.

Mwnci123 · 08/10/2025 09:25

She wasn't the one being a knobhead.

Deadringer · 08/10/2025 08:46

Several kids? She would have my sympathy tbh, there are worse things than a bit of noise.

Supposedly she decided to have several kids so why the sympathy? I would have wanted several kids but decided against because I wanted to be a good and present mother to the two I had.
There are plenty of toys and soft books that aren't noisy. It's just a selfish attitude to let your kids make a lot of noise.

Swiftie1878 · 08/10/2025 08:31

I think I’d cut any mother of several children some slack first thing in the morning!

This will sounds harsh but I wouldn’t
be cutting her slack.

If she wants several children then that’s her perogative but that doesn’t mean she gets cut slack and do what she wants. Why can’t a tired person who has all sorts going on at home be cut some slack?

and I say that as a mother. Yes my kids had toys in the buggy, but no need for noisy, repetitive, irritating toys out and about annoying others.

Rooroobear · 08/10/2025 09:31

Fgs if you were that arsed you should have said something. People make noises on buses. Half the time people have music blaring or their phones on speaker. If a child has a noisy toy so what. I think you’re the rude one

Treepow · 08/10/2025 09:35

It’s really rude but seems to be more and more common people and kids making noise in public with toys, iPads, screens and zero fucks givens.

THisbackwithavengeance · 08/10/2025 09:35

Maybe she should’ve put headphones on the kid with an iPad and then another poster would’ve written a post about letting babies get addicted to tech.

This would not have bothered me one jot. It’s just noise. It’s nice to see DCs play.

Surely this is why headphones were invented so you could public journeys without being disturbed by others?

Comedycook · 08/10/2025 09:37

I wouldn't have cared about this ..it's a bus journey...I don't expect it to be silent. I also think the noise from the toy is probably less worse than the child screaming.

shhblackbag · 08/10/2025 09:39

MellowPinkDeer · 08/10/2025 08:36

I hate these selfish people who have zero self awareness. See also : people who talk on speaker phone / listen to music / watch iPads without headphones.

massive dickheads.

Im with you OP.

Agree. So incredibly annoying.

Why on earth would you have sympathy for her. No one is forced ‘several’ kids.

Ablondiebutagoody · 08/10/2025 09:43

Really surprised by the number of responses saying it's fine because the kid would be a nightmare otherwise. Surely there's a third way. Like people teaching their kids not to be nightmares?

PensionMention · 08/10/2025 09:44

Well it’s public transport and that means the public are on it in all their glorious hideousness. As much as it would irritate there are worse passengers to be sat near.

Because with a little compassion, we can look at anyone and see how the things they have chosen in their life, cause them stress sometimes, and give them a bit of grace when they don’t act perfectly. But I feel for you too op, that’s not fun. Most of us are knobheads really, wanting things to go the way we want. It’s not realistic.

FuzzyWolf · 08/10/2025 09:46

So you heard it for a journey and were annoyed with it. I suspect she hears it day in, day out and either it no longer registers with her how annoying it is or else she’s far more annoyed with it than you are but know the alternative is screaming and not getting all her children where they need to be.

namechangetheworld · 08/10/2025 09:46

What a non-issue.

If you're so intolerant of everyday noise maybe you should learn to drive. Or get a taxi.

vivainsomnia · 08/10/2025 09:48

I’d be irritated too but realistically it was probably a choice between the loud toys or the baby/toddler screaming or crying for the whole journey so, put your headphones on and pick your battles!
Why is the only alternative a screaming child? How about a child who is distracted by a non ultra noisy toy? Or being spoken to? Or encouraged to look outside the window? Why are young children behaviour expected to be bad by default?

I agree that if one choses to have multiple children, one has to be prepared to work twice harder at raising her children as the mum who chose to only have or two. Having many children is not an excuse for raising poorly behaved children.

Agreed. I keep seeing toddlers with iPads and no headphones… especially on planes. With cartoons blaring out. And now teens and young adults playing music from phones in public spaces (on trains etc). I now also see fully fledged adults (ie those over 40s and 50s) watching videos in public spaces with volume at max. Or people on calls with the loud speaker on..

what is wrong with people? I’m not expecting silence, just some consideration for fellow humans. Everyone has turned incredibly self-centered.

Where is the compassion for others? Who knows what is going on in the OPs life. She could be on the edge due to bereavement, or domestic abuse, or just lack of sleep. Or….she could just not enjoy an irritating noise! I carry my AirPods everywhere so I can block this out. But really people should be more considerate of other and show compassion and not inflict their noise on others beyond the general normal hubbub of life.

Completely agree,I somehow managed to navigate bus journeys without disturbing everyone around me with noisy toys and not have my son screaming.
It's called "I spy' or count the red cars outside, it's parenting and being a considerate member of society.

No…. Headphones were invented so you don’t inflict noise on others FFS

There are many other toys that aren’t noisy before reverting to an iPad. Dear God

It’s annoying but personally I’d cut her some slack, she’s probably more knackered than I am.

I would however, fully support capital punishment for people watching videos on their phones without headphones! 😂
