To be absolutely fuming about the digital ID thing?

summerlovingvibes · 06/10/2025 13:52

I work as a nurse in England.

I just feel absolutely fuming about the digital ID proposals and don't know how to channel my anger??

I very strongly object to this. It makes my blood boil when I think about it and I feel anxious knowing that something like this may be imposed on us all.

It is not going to stop illegal immigration. That line is absolute BS. They're doing it for their own selfish reasons.

What do we do? I don't want to not work, but I am going to refuse to have one. So my employer may sack me?!

It's just ridiculous!

Obviously I've signed the petition, emailed my MP, will join any protests etc.

But practically speaking - will my employer actually sack me for not having one?

People have opinions, they are asked by the media. Obviously a major supplier is informed so a good person to ask.

Labour will have to deal with that and what people think generally.

Lonelycrab · 06/10/2025 19:44

Yabu, you are being somewhat paranoid and melodramatic.

You do realise that the phone you carry around (assuming you use a modern phone) tracks your every location and already has a shit ton of personal information about you, which depending on which “accept all” cookies you click on when visiting a/n 9ther website, may be sold to murky data brokers located in any part of the world?!?

Our passports already have biometric information included; the govt presumably has access too this. It’s really not hard for someone to completely track us all, to within an inch of our lives already and I fail to see what you think is going to happen.

The brief replies wrt this are essentially paranoid and little else.

Besides, if someone were to dig really deep into my life, they would only really discover (like I suspect the vast majority of anti ID posters)…what a boring, average and somewhat dull person I am, so I have little to fear with this.

cobrakaieaglefang · 06/10/2025 19:44

So, if we had it, what would happen to those who try to access 'services' without Digital ID. I would imagine Jack all. Lots of handwringing? More soundbites on how to stop a problem that it was supposed to cure? Legal challenges?
Law abiding even more traceable than now and those under radar carries on as normal.
The government can't be trusted to run a piss up in a brewery, it will be an expensive flop.

MabelMoo23 · 06/10/2025 19:48

I don’t have a problem with digital ID - what I do have an issue with is the cost (I thought we were skint as a country ) but the fact it will clearly be rolled out to shitty unscrupulous billionaire government contractors like bloody Serco or Capita

I’m not sure what the fuss is about. What’s wrong with proving who you are and that you have a right to work here? We all have to have a passport if we want to travel out of our country where we live. Genuinely curious as to why this is any worse?

Don't be so naive.

Unlike us, who will now have to have photographs and finger prints taken if we want to enter other European countries. Another Brexit Bonus.

Sadly yes, why we ever left is beyond me! I couldn't even believe leaving was suggested, after all the hard work since the EEC and building the opportunities. So much to say on the topic...

1dayatatime · 06/10/2025 19:54

I am genuinely envious that of all the issues facing the UK at the moment the one that gets your attention is ID cards.

Good news. I’m a chartered tax advisor and happy to put some of your conspiracy theories around tax to bed. The 0.1% pay their taxes like anyone else does. I have worked in many many financial services firms and every single employee pays by PAYE just like anyone else.

The OP bemoans a future ‘cash free’ society. This would be brilliant from a tax evasion perspective as it’s the ‘cash in hand’ trades workers who fuel tax evasion in this country. 40% of small businesses evaded tax last year. That’s appalling. Bring in a cash free society where HMRC have access to your bank accounts and this area of evasion dries up.

We are fortunate to live in a safe, democratic country. I see no downsides for law abiding UK citizens. Only upsides.

Safe democratic country??

Well enlighten me oh wise one! What do you actually know that the rest of us don’t?

Blamanche · 06/10/2025 20:25

I really don’t get the furore about this, it’s really hard for me to give a fuck.

The government already have tons of information about me.

The only thing I would say is that legitimate employers already do proper right to work checks. Unscrupulous employers don’t and Incant see that changing.

Lonelycrab · 06/10/2025 20:49

I think that those (generally) on the right who are fiercely opposed to this can be split into two groups:

Tin foil hat brigade who haven’t actually thought through the tracking data on their ID that is already freely available…

And those that genuinely have something to hide; ie intelligent but worried tax avoiders and those involved in murky schemes..who need to not have anyone looking too closely at what they’re upto.

As I don’t fall into either of these Its not a problem for me.

Yep, we are, with no shame at all. And when we are later saying “we told you so”, we will also be saying “we can tell our children that we foresaw this, and we did not remain silent”.

“Yes children, we posted on Mumsnet and everything.” 🙄

Its a year Happened five years ago. The numbers on my keyboard arent working. But you knew what i meant Im damn sure of it. Because names like far right and Nazi were thrown at people who didnt agree with the restrictions back then. There was also the assumption that anyone who disagreed with the restrictions was also against the vaccines.

Lonelycrab · 06/10/2025 20:58

Generally (I did use that word, it means not exclusively) political pushback for this policy has been from the right. It has been from the posters I recognise here too.

It’s a labour policy. I don’t see the LDs against it? So generally the right are against it…

Corbyn and Lib Dems are both against. Some of Labour too. This is a Starmer policy mostly, and posters who back him on here.

Thanks. I did put a question mark as I was unsure. I don’t follow Corbyn myself.

But I still think (despite not voting labour for the last few elections) that it isn’t a bad idea; we need to know who is actually in this country surely, and this is a quick and simple way for authorities to do so.

Could you say more on how? The quick and easy part.

If an employer currently doesn’t care about proof to work in the U.K. why does another form of ID change anything? They won’t ask for that either.

i know the employer may not be interested.

But if those enforcing against the black economy could check quickly and easily against an employees status that has to be a good thing. I would imagine it may be convoluted right now.

I do believe that our country does have a draw to those working in the black economy simply because it’s easier than it is in eg Europe. I don’t see that as a bad thing to try to address.
