To be absolutely fuming about the digital ID thing?

I work as a nurse in England.

I just feel absolutely fuming about the digital ID proposals and don't know how to channel my anger??

I very strongly object to this. It makes my blood boil when I think about it and I feel anxious knowing that something like this may be imposed on us all.

It is not going to stop illegal immigration. That line is absolute BS. They're doing it for their own selfish reasons.

What do we do? I don't want to not work, but I am going to refuse to have one. So my employer may sack me?!

It's just ridiculous!

Obviously I've signed the petition, emailed my MP, will join any protests etc.

But practically speaking - will my employer actually sack me for not having one?

So discord were hacked and 70,000 peoples age verification ID including official
government IDs were stolen. This includes children aged 13 and above, names, photographs and potentially addresses.

If we think our digital ID info was only ever going to be saved on a safe government database we’re sorely mistaken. When meta or mumsnet requires our digital ID to sign up and post or even just read then that makes our information vulnerable because they won’t have stringent data protection polices. We already know they have had hacks and weaknesses exposed.

ive always been opposed to the kinds of ID that Labour insist on proposing as soon as they get into government. A physical card that doubles up as a driving license and/or passport wouldn’t bother me quite as much, as it would have a function beyond authoritarian politics. An ID that is essential to participate in the basics of society, that penalises those who choose not to take one (as is currently possible with a DL or passport) is a step beyond what is necessary. Do we really believe employers who take on migrant workers don’t have the right to work here and therefore no NI number are going to care if there’s no digital ID. The government re lying to us if they say this is about work.

Furthermore our governments inability to manage anything digital data related makes me not trust their ability to get this right and make things safe. The other IDs in Europe are different to what is being proposed here. This is just an additional layer of bureaucracy designed to make life difficult for the most vulnerable in society. It’s not even a step away from “papers please” it bloody is “show us your papers.”

Tommy Robinson is obsessed with Fabian Society conspiracy theories. You aren't buying into that, have you?

Exactly this! If they’d added the functionality to say voter ID then I’d be ok with it. Should be optional though.

I do wonder about its true purpose. Why is Labour so wedded to this idea. I didn’t vote for them previously due to this ID proposals.

Holycowhowmuch · 10/10/2025 16:49

Have you looked ?

IAmNotALoon · 10/10/2025 17:10

Obviously all labour prime ministers take the Fabian Society very seriously as they have all been members and so is Sadiq Khan and many labour politicians currently. Which explains a lot really. They believed the National Health Service would make better colonialists and that anyone non- productive should be humanely euthanised and they were keen on eugenics too. Nice bunch.

Nelliemott · 10/10/2025 17:25

In the NHS you must have a staff card with your id etc to allow you to scan in to restricted areas etc. What's the difference please? I dont see the point of the digital id but it doesn't bother me muchly.

Massive difference. I have a work ID that allows me access to certain parts of the building. I don’t object to that. I understand its purpose. And it doesn’t extend beyond its purpose

But (in NHS at any length) it has your staff id on it and your photo. It links to your personel file, payroll, etc. If you are a student it also (in my experience) links to your University records too, library records, the lot.

People seem to lack critical thinking skills. Where are all your details currently stored: driving licences, passports, NI number, NHS health records…? Well…they’re stored digitally folks!. If the government wanted to “track you” they’d already do it. You have never been off grid. So deal with it. They just want to centralise it.

everyone has just jumped on the bandwagon wagon of conspiracy theories and it’s embarrassing. That’s social media for you - people can no longer think for themselves.

Yes a digital ID needn't be scary in itself but it depends on how it's implemented and what safeguards are being put in place and will it actually be secure? Will the government be able to restrict your access to your own money if they disapprove of what you do, will they be able to restrict your movement or limit your purchases? Is Starmer addressing these concerns,? If he isn't, perhaps we should ask ourselves why and why this is being presented as a "fait accompli" without proper consultation with the public.

Well I'm not sure I would put it past them... But if I was an MP or a person in a public role I would want nothing to do with a society that had such a disgusting history. It would be like joining the Nazi Party and saying that they had changed philosophy.

IAmNotALoon · 10/10/2025 17:43

Anyway why do you think their emblem is a wolf in sheep's clothing?

That’s one organisation. I work with students so yes the student ID links to all their records. That only staff can see. We have strict rules on who we can and can’t share information with.

No issue with this. There’s a reason why this exists as it does.

But trying to push a digital ID to solve immigration and illegal working is a nonsense. So what’s the real reason?

Sesma · 10/10/2025 17:53

Reform will get rid of them anyway if they are the next government. NF seems to be very against them, could be a vote winner

The Fabian Society acknowledges its past on its website. It is all just far-right conspiracy theory crap which started up after the Epping hotel case. Stephen Pollard, who used to work for the FS, has written an excellent piece in the Spectator about it. You should read the whole thing, but I will post his conclusion.

In Vietnam the banks have millions of dollars with no digital id to go with them so customers have been told to put there I'd next to the bank account or they will lose the money can you imagine needing an id just to shop or get a taxi or do just about anything if it can happen over there it could be here next

I don’t have an issue with unvaccinated people being refunded entry to a crowded pub at the time of a global pandemic though. These people are selfish fuckwits and fully deserve to have their movements restricted for the health of the rest of us. I’m really glad that the democratically elected government of the time chose to protect us from these people.

"Selfish fuckwits" for refusing a vaccine that doesn't even stop transmission 😂

Pharazon · 07/10/2025 11:33

@Chiseltip can you give some examples of all these things you are prophesising happening in other countries with a unified ID system? Do you need to show your ID to enter a shopping centre in Denmark? Or to buy a train ticket in Sweden? No of course you don't.

China.

You have great faith in him.
It could indeed be a vote winner.
Whether he would actually do so may be quite another matter.

But who am I? Politicians always do what they promised they would do while they were in opposition, because they are extremely accountable, and have the very highest standards of truth and integrity. Boris Johnson demonstrated this perfectly, as befits a gentleman educated by one of the highest seats of learning.

All the other parties are against, hopefully it’ll keep losing Labour votes.

PaterPower · 10/10/2025 19:57

Labour didn’t have this policy in their manifesto, so where’s their mandate for it?

They’ve already as much as admitted that it’s nothing to do with controlling immigration (assuming ANYBODY fell for that load of BS!) as they’re now floating the idea that 13 year olds be added to it.

The Labour party’s always had a bit of a tendency to lurch toward authoritarianism when it’s been in power, so it’s not a particular shock that they’re going for this, but at least have the honesty to put it before the people at election time.

And I love how they’re always stressing it’s “free” in their press releases. Of course it’s not fucking “free” to anyone of tax-paying age in this country. Or are we back to raiding Theresa May’s ‘Money Tree’ again?

Deloitte / Crapita / Fujitsu / whoever are going to absolutely hoover up cash on this project. There are Partners in all of the big consultancies absolutely wetting themselves at the thought of getting stuck into this gravy train.
