AIBU to tell team members to forfeit their breaks

Team member 1: came unprepared to meeting and needed to use one of my pens. Unprofessional. She is being groomed for a role in another office where manager would definitely make her forfeit her breaks for that, so it’s important she learns now.

Team member 2: Left annotated document at home which means I have to fit it in tomorrow instead of today. It is only five minutes of work, but again that’s not the point. They should have remembered.

Team member 3: Briefing team and a team member takes his suit jacket off in the middle of it, which meant I had no choice but to disrupt the meeting for everyone in order to apprehend him.

Zoflorabore · 03/10/2025 22:13

apprehend?! What is the nature of your work? You sound unhinged.

GlastoNinja · 03/10/2025 22:14

Another one of these? Just say what you’re trying to say, it’s much easier and mess irritating

Merryoldgoat · 03/10/2025 22:14

Obviously the point you’re making is about punitive school punishments. I agree with you that schools have become like prisons and I detest it.

Mum2twoandacockapoo · 03/10/2025 22:14

Weird !! What do you expect them to do on their break ?
Give them a piece of paper so they can write out 1000 times I MUST NOT FORGET MY HOMEWORK?!

FastNewt · 03/10/2025 22:14

Wow

Fiftyandme · 03/10/2025 22:15

IKR? This is supposed to ‘prepare’ them for the work place.

Robertplantgoddess · 03/10/2025 22:15

You know its illegal ? Unless you are trying to say something about schools then just say it.

FOJN · 03/10/2025 22:17

Did reprimand autocorrect to apprehend or is OP a police officer and taking a jacket off is now a crime?

Pricelessadvice · 03/10/2025 22:17

Because we all know what good comes of kids not having rules and discipline…

School children aren't adults.

Totally this and as we've seen at our school the more you give the more they take.

I am absolutely appalled at how they distroy, pens, rulers and our expensive science equipment, calculators that they have borrowed and anything else some of them get their hands on. The amount of budget we waste providing pens and other equipment for them to just to distory it is heart breaking.

Any out there know how one gets a pen to exploded because they do it multiple times a day and ink gets everywhere.

Our school isn't even that bad, we are a very middle class area.

No it’s not. It’s about getting them through their education. Education isn’t a preparation for work. That’s training.

Matronic6 · 03/10/2025 22:21

You have a problem with a school right?

  1. school kids are not adults in a workplace
  2. the majority of secondary schools have super strict expectations because behaviour now is bloody wild and a lot of parents set fuck all boundaries at home
  3. if you don't agree with the school behaviour policy, send your child to a different school
DarkForces · 03/10/2025 22:22

I get a lot less breaks in work than in school, work longer hours and my lunch break is accounted for on my timesheet and unpaid. If I behaved unprofessionally I'd get pulled up on it and it would eventually cost me my job. Teaching children that they are responsible for their actions and having clear consequences is part of school life.

Sorry, but I can’t help hoping your teachers can spell “destroy”.
Also, I think you may be mistaken if you think middle class children can’t be little terrors!

  1. why should I give out my personal pens to team members. I wouldn’t mind if it was a one off but it’s always the same people that don’t have a pen, they are the same ones that are unprepared for the meeting, talk over others in the meeting, and generally show a lack of respect for the meeting. The lack of a pen kind of sums up their attitude towards the whole meeting. Very often, they destroy my pen too or I don’t get it back. As this happens multiple times a day, yes it does get wearing.
  2. why should I give up time to review a document. I had planned to go through the document today as I have an hour set aside to go through all the documents, this will help me as I can give consistent feedback to everyone. Now I don’t have everyone’s document, I’m gonna have to miss my swimming class tomorrow night as that’s the only other time I have to do it. Again, it’s not just 1 document, but there are multiple that missed the deadline and it impacts me.
  3. i don’t personally care about taking jacket off but when they joined the company, they agreed to a code of conduct for dress when on company property, its part of my role to ensure that all employees are meeting that standard.
RaininSummer · 03/10/2025 22:23

What an odd thread. I was very confused until people made it clear you were trying to clever about school children.

FaceBothered · 03/10/2025 22:24

Slow night is it OP?

brunettemic · 03/10/2025 22:25

So you’re trying to question how school works vs work. If we ignore the obvious that they’re very different things and let’s turn your examples into work based scenarios:
Team member 1…doesn’t bring their laptop to work because they’ve never learnt the importance of bringing the correct resources and being prepared for the day.
Team member 2…failed get a contract signed by a new customer and upload it into the relevant system, the customer took their business elsewhere and the business suffered financial loss. All because they didn’t learn the importance of doing tasks complete and on time.
Team member 3…never learned that sometimes you’re asked to wear certain things at certain times. They don’t bring their PPE on site, walked under a scaffold and a breeze block fell and caved their skull in.

If you don’t focus on the specifics of the things you don’t like and realise a lot of them are general guidance for life it can change your view.

LNEAX · 03/10/2025 22:27

What line of work is this? You sound incredibly stressed and are taking it out on your team. Of course people need breaks at work and occasionally forget things etc. If this is just a drop in the puddle then manage that separately but id avoid making it a toxic place to work or being ‘that’ kind of manager who no one listens to because they’re seen as nitpicking/OTT.

Marianne54 · 03/10/2025 22:28

Are you trying to be clever? Really, you sound like a twat. Stop digging yourself a hole and think of an excuse for mn to delete this thread.

I don't teach and yes they can spell better then me as I'm severely dyslexic. And no auto correct really doesn't always help.

Zoflorabore · 03/10/2025 22:13

Report and move on - grooming, apprehending. Something is not right about this post.

Clarinet1 · 03/10/2025 22:28

Regarding the forgotten “document”, is it not an option for you to say “Right, you didn’t bring it when you were supposed to so you get a zero mark”? No missing your swimming class because of their slapdash performance?

ilovesooty · 03/10/2025 22:29

Why is the OP using two different usernames?
