... and how Jews are not protected in this country.

Yes, I do think anti-semitism is rising in this and other countries.
But I also see hate for Muslims and other groups being marginalised.

The narrative of "hate thy neighbour" is here.

Do you really think it's 'bullshit' when Jews were murdered for being Jewish, at their place of worship, on Yom Kippur?

They were murdered for being Jewish, that is Anti-Semitism.

I think we have to separate two things here - to me, Islamic extremist attacks are more what I'd call 'Jew hatred' rather than antisemitism, it's very different from the essentially Christian-founded antisemitism. I differentiate the two as the roots and how they manifest are quite different and the people behind each are not generally of an accord with one another.

That's a very rough description. Anyway, have been fasting all day and am tired so going to bed now.

That is not a recognised definition, nor is it one that most would agree with. Regardless of the roots, this is still Anti-Semitism.

I was fasting as well today. I am still appalled by what has happened.

It is disgusting what has happened today .
I want any Jewish people reading to know that it’s a vile minority who harbour hatred. Jewish people have long called UK home , are 100% welcome here & no one I know would dream of having a problem with this. Jewish people aren’t responsible for Israeli governments actions against Palestine.
I would welcome more protection for Jewish in Uk . As I would welcome for any minorities.

There are plenty of Muslim schools and Mosques. How many terrorist attacks have there been at either of these? You are hugely missing the point, while providing no evidence for your claims.

There’s plenty of evidence that hostility towards Muslims and other minorities happens and is increasing. I am not missing the point at all. Your point was that Jews are not protected in the country. My point is that nor are most people (Muslims, Jews, Hindus, Sikhs, women) and Jews are no different. It is all equally horrific.

There have been increased concerns at mosques in Manchester as recently as a few weeks ago:

the 2017 Finsbury Park attack was also targeted at Muslims; many planned attacks have been intercepted since.

I’m shocked the utter evilness of today’s attack, and praying for the Jewish community.

It's been simmering longer than the recent attack , it seemed to gain momentum ,literally under Corbyn and momentum

My Jewish friends who were born here and whose parents were born here no longer feel safe. Islamic extremism is not going away.

And people were blaming the victims of the attack because of Israel straight away, people were waving Palestinian flags straight away in an attack on a community that has nothing to do with the Middle East.

I'm very critical of Israeli actions in Gaza (which Jewish people have absolutely nothing to do with) but any kind of spontaneous, or even planned for that matter, pro Palestinian demos or flag waving today has an air of celebration to me. That may well not be the intention of some of the flag wavers, but that's my feeling and they should have some sensitivity.

@Arrrrrrragghhh what a bizarre response. Don’t you have any compassion for the murdered fgs.

It certainly shows a robust police response. The reality is you can’t prevent everything. It is a devastating attack but was dealt with quickly. It’s incredibly sad for the people killed but it could of been so much worse.

Why are they being targeted? They're not responsible for Israel's actions. What are they meant to do?

Why, on a thread about a terrorist attack on the Jewish community, are you bringing this up?

It shows a total lack of compassion.

The equivalent is someone talking about a killing of a black person, and black lives matter, and you responding that 'all lives matter'.

A link posted by another member illustrated the scale of the problem, with terrorism being primarily from Islamic extremist, who predominantly attack the Jewish community.

UK — Islamophobic attacks on mosques, Muslim institutions, and Muslim cemeteries

(covering the past two years: 2 Oct 2023 → 2 Oct 2025) — UK-only, non-exhaustive, focused on widely-reported/high-impact incidents and patterns

Below I’ve pulled together the key incidents and patterns reported in UK media and NGO monitoring. Each item has a short description and a source you can read for details.

Major incidents & patterns

  • 30 July 2024 — Southport (Merseyside): mob violence outside Southport Mosque; windows damaged, clashes with police and wider far-right-linked unrest that spread to many towns.
  • Early August 2024 — Nationwide (riot week 30 July–5 Aug 2024): multiple attacks, vandalism and threats targeting mosques, Muslim community centres, and businesses during the week of far-right unrest (hundreds arrested; many local reports of mosque damage and targeted attacks).
  • 5 August 2024 — Burnley Cemetery (Lancashire): multiple Muslim graves reported vandalised; police investigated as hate crime as part of the unrest period.
  • Jan 2025 (reported) — London: at least seven London mosques and a Muslim school were vandalised with Islamophobic graffiti in a wave of attacks; police and community groups treated this as a coordinated pattern of harassment.
  • Mar–Apr 2025 — London and wider England: a continuing wave of anti-Muslim vandalism and threats (multiple mosques, community centres and at least one Muslim school reported targeted across London boroughs); NGOs and Tell MAMA recorded rising reports and community alarm.
  • 14 April 2025 — Watford / Carpenders Park Lawn Cemetery (Hertfordshire): large-scale vandalism reported — dozens of Muslim graves and grave markers badly damaged (press reported ~85 graves affected); police launched a hate-crime investigation.

Longer-term monitoring / statistics

  • NGOs & trackers (Tell MAMA, Hope not Hate, CLAIM network, others) reported sustained increases in anti-Muslim incidents during 2024–2025 (including threats, doxxing, graffiti, vandalism of mosques and cemeteries, and harassment of Muslim schools). These organisations publish rolling summaries and incident logs that document the many local, smaller-scale events not always covered in national press.

Notes on scope & sources

  • This list is UK-only and covers widely reported/high-impact incidents and aggregated NGO findings. There are many smaller local reports (graffiti, threats, online doxxing, brief vandalism) that community groups and police record; NGO trackers (Tell MAMA, Hope not Hate) are the best place for comprehensive incident logs.
  • The Watford / Carpenders Park cemetery incident (April 14, 2025) is the most prominent recent example specifically involving large-scale damage to a Muslim cemetery in the period covered.

I am not sure if anti semitism has increased or because of the situation in Gaza people feel free to voice their antisemitism hiding behind their concerns for Gaza

i can’t answer if Jewish people are not protected enough it will seem not and certainly there is less sympathy towards Jewish people who have been attacked in recent times

it’s absolutely shocking what has happened today it’s shameful that this has happened today in the UK

Yes, this. Both probably.

What happened today at the synagogue was abhorrent and unacceptable. Jews are right to feel unsafe.

However just in the past few weeks -a girl attacked leaving mosque , imam in London stabbed within his mosque. A
children’s class in a mosque was attacked in Glasgow. These are just in the last 2 weeks by the way. They have all been classed as hate crimes but not terrorism because the perpetrators have all been white.

They are never reported in the mainstream news.

That doesn’t mean it is not happening.

I only mention the above because you said these things don’t happen in mosques.

It is not to take away from what has happened today.

another poster said Islamophobia is worse , but it is not a bloody competition!

Youdontseehow · 02/10/2025 22:42

CopperWhite · 02/10/2025 21:33

No minorities are protected in this country. There is a rise in racism and xenophobia in general, Jews are no different to any of the other minorities that are feeling unsafe.

but who is “protected” in this country?

most terrorist attacks in recent times have been Islamist against the majority of people in this country. Before that it was the IRA also attacking the majority.

So it’s not just minorities who feel unsafe and unprotected.

That may well not be the intention of some of the flag wavers, but that's my feeling and they should have some sensitivity.

I'm also highly critical of Israel's actions, and believe that they should be protested.

Unfortunately, the Pro Palestine movements in the UK are absolutely rife with Antisemitism. What happened in Manchester today is consistent with much of the messaging at Pro-Palestine rallies (just looking at images out of Manchester last year, large banners reading "Manchester Says One Solution. Intifada. Revolution" as well as the standard "Globalize the Intifada".

I don't believe that all attendees even understand, let alone agree with, the reasonable interpretations of the slogans they adopt and march under but even through their presence, they support it.

I would hope and pray, but do not expect, that today's protestors are far more thoughtful with their messaging than they have been to date.

RoamingToaster · 02/10/2025 22:50

I don't know about spontaneous Palestinian protests but there were quite a few planned ones. Well before the attack I received an email at work about a planned protest near our work place.
