Am I ungrateful because DP didn’t buy the calendar I wanted before it sold out?

Gillinggold · 01/10/2025 17:28

I had a shit week last week and DP knew I was browsing beauty calendar’s. He asked which one I liked and I told him the name of the one I was going to buy.

He told me not to buy it and that he’d treat me to it as one of his Christmas presents to me. I was really grateful and said it sells out quick so to be aware of that.

Lo and behold, he’s gone to buy it and it’s sold out and not coming back in stock. I was annoyed, said I really had my eye on it and would have happily brought it myself as originally intended.

He says I’m being ungrateful and that it’s not his fault. Well, I told him he’d need to get a move on at the time and feel really annoyed now….

Those poo-pooing these advent calendars clearly aren’t in the beauty world or see the value in them.

My DP gets me the vogue one each year, and most of the products are full-size - not samples. It only takes a few high-end products and you’ve already got your monies worth. If you buy high-end makeup / skincare / haircare then they are well worth it.

I’m only just finishing off the products I got in last years calendar.

One what? Realist?

Cynical balloon popper.

Donttellempike · 01/10/2025 19:32

NessShaness · 01/10/2025 19:26

I’m sure they restocked last year, and the website has an option to sign up to be notified when the advent calendar comes back in stock so all hope may not be lost!

Fair enough. Never when I looked but may have missed it.

cordeliabuffy · 01/10/2025 19:34

The Hannah Martin x ok one is still available and I think the boots one which was great value
I did get the space NK one, it was a redundancy treat to myself and the value is well worth it

CAMHShelp · 01/10/2025 19:39

Gillinggold · 01/10/2025 18:44

I don’t like that one as much as SpaceNK, but I’ll find another one I’m sure x

I know. It’s really shit. It’s the kind of thing my DP would do then just shrug.

Honestly? Just a load of people who are either incredibly
materialistic or into overconsumption

I think it can depend on your age. I used to be into ‘stuff’ but I’m just not anymore. One day I just woke up and realised I no longer wanted it. For me personally it would just be clutter, but I didn’t always think like that, I consumed and wanted stuff I wouldn't want for free now.

I see all the halo polishers are here, telling us they ask for a dry stale cracker and they donate all gifts received to the orphanage

Threads like this always bring out faux naivety and miserable gits.

Christmas things sell out in advance, it’s not exactly a shock. The local Santa garden centre sold out within 30 minutes of booking opening yesterday. Christmas stuff is popular, can’t be a surprise

Trickabrick · 01/10/2025 19:43

MindfulAndDemure · 01/10/2025 19:07

The replies to this thread are fucking ridiculous.

The smug fucks who tell you its all just marketing, and that makes you gullible. Ever heard of Tampax / Audi / Warburtons? That's down to marketing. Are you slating people for buying those items?

The ones who say its all samples. There are a total of 35 items, 26 of which are full size, according the website. Even if it was all samples, what's wrong with wanting to try out multiple expensive products before purchasing bigger sizes of the ones that work for you? Its what OP wanted.

The ones who are incredulous that you buy each other gifts AT ALL. I dont even know what to say to this one. Its fucking christmas. People buy gifts. You are the weirdo here, not OP.

YANBU OP.

Edited

This! MN is wild for this sort of thing, it’s amazing how pathetically desperate some posters are to throw darts at the OP.

JSMill · 01/10/2025 19:45

Honestly shit happens. If it was so important to you, you should have bought it yourself.

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 01/10/2025 19:46

Arseholes out in force, I see.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 01/10/2025 19:47

I would be annoyed OP. It doesn’t matter what the item was, you wanted to buy yourself a treat with your bonus, DH stepped in to tell you not to because he would buy it for Christmas for you (conveniently saving himself the job of thinking about what to get you), you told him how quickly it would sell out, and then he didn’t buy it in time. He’s got a cheek to tell you that you are being ungrateful.

Hopefully you will be able to find it in a store or it will restock. If so, I’d buy it yourself, and tell him he can make it up to you with a lovely surprise gift at Christmas instead.

She didn't ask anyone to fix her life. She was perfectly happy buying the advent calendar for herself but her other half offered to buy it as a present. He then didn't do so in time and the OP can't fix the situation he's created because it's now sold out.
Why is this thread generating such venom - because a woman dares to want to spend money on perceived frivolities like skincare?!

Boxboom · 01/10/2025 19:55

Yes that would bug me.
His assertion that you should grateful he said he would do something but then didn't, would bug the absolute shit out of me, more than the calendar.
That's complete CF territory.
I wouldn't be letting that go.
He's a bullshitter.

TheHillIsMine · 01/10/2025 19:57

Zov · 01/10/2025 18:49

I think YABU @Gillinggold

How on earth was your DH meant to know a 2026 calendar would sell out by 1st OCTOBER the previous year? It's almost 3 months to Christmas! Surely the manufacturer should produce some more?!

What kind of company makes so few calendars that the stock doesn't last past the end of September the previous year? Confused

If they CBA to print/produce more, they don't deserve for people to buy them. Also, if they sell out early, it was unwise to rely on someone else to buy it for you.

You've misunderstood what type of calendar it is..

AzurePanda · 01/10/2025 20:05

I’ve been burnt too many times by exactly this situation so now I just use DH’s card and tell him what present he’s bought me.

You sound like you could improve your reading comprehension skills 🤣

eosmum · 01/10/2025 20:08

Definitely not UR, my DH has form for getting cheaper version of what i actually want or leaving it too late. You warned him, he didn’t listen. I’d be pissed off. Can’t get over the wave of why do you buy presents, buy it yourself etc. people are strange🤣

Livpool · 01/10/2025 20:11

I mean you don’t need to be grateful BUT I would never think an advent calendar needed to be bought before the beginning of October. I love beauty but can’t justify the price of those things so have never compensated buying one, so it wouldn’t occur to me to buy one before November

Sugargliderwombat · 01/10/2025 20:23

Ungrateful for what? He didn't bloody get one.

Can't stand men with fragile egos like this. Messed up a plan but try and turn it back on you because the intention was there.

limescale · 01/10/2025 20:25

Gillinggold · 01/10/2025 17:53

I get that, but I made it clear that despite it being September, it has form for selling out that early in previous years. He said he noted that and told me not to worry.

Unless someone told me that it sold out on the day it was released (or whatever it was) I would think that I'd have until November to get something for Christmas.
I would not interpret "form for selling out early" as an advent calendar selling out in September.

Notmyreality · 01/10/2025 20:25

Trauma

gamerchick · 01/10/2025 20:26

How does that make you ungrateful though, did he buy another one instead and expected you to be happy?

I think I'd be annoyed as well.

I would suggest reading the OP again. It is a beauty advent calendar. Often in high demand and they sell out fast. The OP advised this was the case.

Not a 2026 calendar with dates and crap on to hang on your wall.
