Am I ungrateful because DP didn’t buy the calendar I wanted before it sold out?

I had a shit week last week and DP knew I was browsing beauty calendar’s. He asked which one I liked and I told him the name of the one I was going to buy.

He told me not to buy it and that he’d treat me to it as one of his Christmas presents to me. I was really grateful and said it sells out quick so to be aware of that.

Lo and behold, he’s gone to buy it and it’s sold out and not coming back in stock. I was annoyed, said I really had my eye on it and would have happily brought it myself as originally intended.

He says I’m being ungrateful and that it’s not his fault. Well, I told him he’d need to get a move on at the time and feel really annoyed now….

I’d be so mad OP.
And what’s this lunacy about being ungrateful - ungrateful for what, he didnt do anything for you! He just scuppered your chance to get the thing you wanted! Not sure about this guy tbh OP….

TheGreatWesternShrew · 02/10/2025 21:42

I’d be a bit annoyed but wouldn’t hold it against him tbh. Most blokes don’t realise that ‘sells out fast’ sometimes means hours or days rather than say by November.

Oh shit I forgot to buy this one 🫠

Shutuptrevor · 02/10/2025 21:44

I can’t bear being expected to he grateful for incompetence just because there was a vaguely nice thought behind it. And it is never women who expect it, either!

@Allthatshines1992

are you seriously saying that this woman shouldn’t be spending any of the money she herself has earned on herself, on nice things that make her feel good and that she enjoys? You think she has to “squirrel away” every single penny for her child? Really??

Nope the only options are a woman spending all of her money on other people or buying an expensive cat. Those selfish, vain women should never consider spending money on a treat for themselves.
And men shouldn't understand that it'll sell out quickly means it'll sell out quickly, when it comes to lady things. They can understand when it's Oasis tickets but this is just well marketed lady goo.

Yes because the child is suffering and did not choose to be conceived/born.

It looks like it’s on eBay - even empty box so he could fill it with stuff you like if you give him a list!!

What the fuck is wrong with you? Why are you going after this stranger who has already made it clear that she's had a rough year??
Absolutely nothing she has posted has suggested that she isn't already doing everything she can for her kid. Women don't need to set themselves on fire to keep everyone else warm.

Soontobe60 · 01/10/2025 17:37

YABU because ‘beauty calendars’ are just ridiculous marketing ploys developed to get people to buy a load of stuff they would never normally buy with the vague hope that there would be some sort of miracle potion that will turn you into a thing of beauty.
Your Dp has done you a massive favour!

Absolutely this! You’re lucky to even be in a position to be able to buy one of these. Lucky you but YABU!

Thank you.

My daughter is doing much better with regards to her anxiety, this poster knows nothing about them other than a couple of sentences that I’ve posted, and their opinion really is meaningless to me.

They don’t bother me. Their posts tell me exactly what sort of person they are and I pity them. I hope they heal.

On the plus side, it’s less pointless tat you’ll throw away and pollute the world with so he’s done the environment a favour!

Annoying, but let it go. It's small potatoes

Ok,he doesn’t get to police her feelings
Conversely,he doesn’t need to accommodate her misplaced ire
she doesn’t get to police his feelings either, cuts both ways
Seeing you asked, wonder if there a back story of her to him?

Why is her ire misplaced?
He offered to buy something, he didn't.
And yet according to many on this thread, she is in the wrong.

I honestly can't fathom the kind of people who post here any more.

70sMuuMuu · 02/10/2025 22:25

The thing is, she was going to buy it for herself and he told her not to… she would have had it had it.

You are being unreasonable - I’ve had to google what a beauty calendar is, it’s not the end of the world. If it was that important you should have told him you’d buy it yourself or got it yourself anyway and had double or ebay’d it!
There’s no way the average person would expect a Christmas gift to sell out in September.
Maybe look at an alternative (more expensive one 🤣) or count the good things you do have in life?

aperolspritzbasicbitch · 02/10/2025 22:30

OP, that is massively frustrating, and you are 100% not being ungrateful.

i know it’s not the one you wanted, but in recent years I’ve had the Harrods and Selfridges ones - and they were really good. The Harrods one felt especially indulgent. Stay clear of the benefit one, that one was awful.

i have no idea why people come on to sneer at other people’s interests. I absolutely love the little bit of excitement when opening it each morning. My children open theirs, and we oooh and ahhh at whatever chocolate shape they have that day, and then we do the same with whatever product I get. It’s our little morning routine.
Like most mothers, I spend the run up to Christmas making sure that everyone else is looked after and that my children are enjoying the magic of Christmas, if someone wants to begrudge my partner treating me to something that’s going to make the festive season equally as nice for me then they can piss all the way off!

notacooldad · 02/10/2025 22:30

He offered to buy something, he didn't
To be fair to him, its not like he offered and had no intention of doing so. He just wasnt quick enough of the mark and didnt realise they would sell out so quick is my take on the situation.

If I had been asked to do the same I would have it in my mind to do it in the week thinking I'll have to get it soon but there's loads of time until Christmas.
I think if you are in the know about these beauty boxes you would understand the urgency but if not you would wonder what all the fuss is about,( especially for 350 quids worth if stuff)

Imgurssing the ungrateful comment is him just getting defensive and used the word inappropriately and out of context.

Someone asked a question so I answered it, it's not deliberately mean. It's just what I believe, which is what she asked me.
