To cancel my gym class I’m booked into tonight?

I’ve woken up full of cold and I feel like shit. All I want is to crawl into bed, but needs must and I need to go to work. My gym asks that you avoid cancelling on the day of a class, but you have to do it more than 4 hours before the class if you’re going to. I’ll see if I can still go to the gym at all, because I know I’m being lazy if I don’t, but AIBU to break their policy and cancel?

Honestly if you feel that rough I would give gym and class a miss one night won’t hurt and your body will thank you for the recovery time

wonderingwhatsnext · 30/09/2025 07:13

Please don't go to the gym and infect everyone else! Think of it as kindness to the world instead of laziness.

Thissickbeat · 30/09/2025 07:13

Of course you have to cancel. You'll just forfeit the fee.

EmpressaurusKitty · 30/09/2025 07:13

If you’re feeling that shit you’d be daft to go, plus it wouldn’t be fair to spread your germs,

WhatDidIDoToBeDealtThisHand · 30/09/2025 07:14

If you go to the gym or do a class no one will thank you for spreading your germs.
Cancel now, thats plenty more than the minimum of 4 hours they ask. That will open your space up and some one will grab it!

dementedpixie · 30/09/2025 07:14

Of course you cancel if you feel like shit. We can cancel within 2 hours of the start time without penalty. If there's a waiting list then emails go out to people on it so the space can get filled.

You dont want to infect other people either so stay away

SoftCyanWool · 30/09/2025 07:17

I can’t justify skipping entirely - I feel like I’m just falling into old habits where I use any old excuse to not go. I can handle some gentle cardio and muscle training, but not a high intensity class. Just feel like a failure!

Definitely cancel. A few months ago I went to a gym class when I was recovering from a bad cold. I had to leave part way through because my breathing still wasn’t right and I’d gone light headed! The 4 hours is a thing at my gym too, but I assume cancelling more than 4 hours in advance if you’re unwell is absolutely fine.

HuskyNew · 30/09/2025 07:19

Old habits are not looking after yourself.

going to the gym when illl is just a new form of that self punishment.

Your real goal should be a balanced life & the ability to prioritise rest, safe in the knowledge you’ll be back at the gym later on the week

Perhaps it’s not all about you? Have you considered the people next to you on cardio machines or touching weights after you might not want your germs to compromise their fitness regimes? Incredibly selfish and a bit of a failure of common sense and decency if you ask me. If you’re that desperate do some body weight exercises at home or go for a jog.

Dont be ridiculous. Part of looking after yourself is to listen to your body. I missed classes on sunday and monday as I was loaded with the cold and went back on Tuesday when I felt a bit better. Nobody will thank you for spreading your germs

But if you feel like shit do you really want to make other people ill? Surely you can miss one day? You won’t be doing yourself any favours by pushing through a work out ( my PT won’t hold our sessions if we are poorly, partly for not wanting to be ill but also for our health benefits too)

TeaRoseTallulah · 30/09/2025 07:26

Exercise at home if you really can't bear to miss a day but don't give what you have to everyone else as that's just selfish.

SoftCyanWool · 30/09/2025 07:29

For what it’s worth I’m pretty sure it’s not contagious. I’ve felt run down for a week now and nobody around me has picked it up.

OP posts:
Thissickbeat · 30/09/2025 07:29

Go for a walk instead. Especially if the sun is out. My gym teacher gets so annoyed with people who go to the gym ill as she then picks it up and the odd class is cancelled for everyone.

InMyOpenOnion · 30/09/2025 07:29

Part of being fit and healthy is knowing when not to exercise, and having the confidence to know it won't all go to hell in a handbasket if you miss a session. Let your body recover.

Please don’t go if you’re ill. There may be people there who are immunocompromised. Not as serious but still annoying, is that there will probably also be people there who have trained hard for things that are coming up shortly and all their hard work would be wasted if they caught your illness and couldn’t compete. I have a marathon and in two weeks and would be quite annoyed if all my training went to waste because someone knowingly came to the gym and spread their germs. Some places you have to go no matter what, some places you can avoid. This is one of them.

Halfaday · 30/09/2025 07:33

Baffling

just baffling

If you really must go to the gym please be aware of others, just because you don’t think it is contagious doesn’t mean it isn’t, also if you have felt off for a week maybe you just need to rest? I am having to miss classes as I have a broken foot, I hate it and really want to go back but I am taking drs advice and not going back early… a cold shouldn’t be any different. Recover then go back. I am going to do stuff at home but upper body only

Then go for a power walk outside. You said you’ve woken up full of cold, so don’t be giving your germs to others!!!! I’d be pissed off if you turned up to my class with a runny nose/ sneezing etc.

AnotherCrazyCatLady · 30/09/2025 07:37

Reading this makes me really frustrated!

You have said you feel like you have a "cold", in which case, it is contagious. It is selfish to turn up to the gym with a cold and participate in activities that will likely spread your illness to others.

Second, if you have been worn out, then your body will not benefit from exercising tonight – it needs rest. If you can't see this and think you must keep going to prove some kind of point with yourself, then you probably need a bit of self-analysis / support / counselling, because this is not a healthy or sustainable approach.

Which is great, but you still shouldn’t be going on machines which other people will then be touching. Exercise at home or go for a brisk walk.

Speaking as someone who goes to the gym a lot, (most days for one thing or another) I think this is a bit of a worrying mindset op.

One missed session - that will be severely sub optimal anyway - will not negate all your hard work.

My PT would be telling you not to go. And so am I. And that’s without the issue of spreading germs.

Harrysmummy246 · 30/09/2025 07:41

If you're too ill for the class, don't go to the gym and leave your germs everywhere please. YANBU to cancel but YABU to then go to the gym anyway.

If you feel like you need to move (not that you should because skipping would become a habit blah blah), go for a walk and stretch at home.
