To cancel my gym class I’m booked into tonight?

I’ve woken up full of cold and I feel like shit. All I want is to crawl into bed, but needs must and I need to go to work. My gym asks that you avoid cancelling on the day of a class, but you have to do it more than 4 hours before the class if you’re going to. I’ll see if I can still go to the gym at all, because I know I’m being lazy if I don’t, but AIBU to break their policy and cancel?

Because I want to build a good habit, the gym is far away from my home where I work, so it’s Monday-Friday. I can’t get over there at the weekends as easily.

Just alternate gym days with going for a walk?

Going every day isn't a good habit though. Go every second day to start with. You need to build in rest days too

Sorry you don't feel very well.
But
You sound really difficult. Just about everyone has given you good advice and you've basically argued back on every point. The class cancellation is literally exactly within their terms yet you're still asking here. And yeah, go to the gym and put your germs all over the place, and now the new thing, add your germs to public transport, suddenly introduced out of nowhere.
You're contrary and difficult.

ShodAndShadySenators · 30/09/2025 08:20

And illness isn't "any old excuse not to go"! This isn't sustainable. A good habit is more like every other day but with flexibility to accommodate the changes we get in life

WeNeedToTalkAboutIT · 30/09/2025 08:22

Go for a walk at lunchtime - to the nearest pharmacy for some cold medicine. Or after work before you go home - gentle exercise achieved.

Coughs and colds can incubate for 2 weeks before becoming symptomatic.

I don’t own a car. What am I meant to do?

Don't spread your germs. Please.

popcornandpotatoes · 30/09/2025 08:24

I genuinely can't believe this is something you need to check on MN about

Throneofgame · 30/09/2025 08:25

You are setting yourself up to fail.

I guarantee you that going every day is not going to last and in 6 weeks time you won't be going at all. For someone who is starting from zero exercise and is obese, you need to ease yourself in and build a natural routine. Start with twice a week.

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 30/09/2025 08:26

I don't understand why you're asking. You don't need permission to please yourself.

Don't go to work. Don't go to the gym. Don't go on public transport.
It's pretty basic behaviour, you are unwell, don't spread it.

HappyToSmile · 30/09/2025 08:27

A lot of people have given you a lot of advice but you're clearly going to do what you were going to before posting.
FWIW, a good habit is listening to your body. If you're desperate to do something, go for a walk or do some exercise at home.

Because of a cold? Okay, I’ll call my boss, lose £100 per day when I can’t afford to, because I’ve got a cold!

Why did you post this? What do you actually want from it?

Because people are telling you not to go and you're banging on about being fat. It's all very weird. One missed gym session is going to make fuck all difference.

I never said I was starting from 0 exercise. I’ve completed couch to 5k. I used to go to the gym 6 days a week but changed jobs and got out of the habit after surgery.

Cancel fhe gym and try and find a job with a proper sick pay policy ( the later being harder than the former )

Yes, a few of us have said that but the OP’s ignoring it. I’m going to hide the thread now because it’s getting annoying.

mrschocolatte · 30/09/2025 08:35

You should be able to work out in your head what risk you pose to others from being sick and then make a sensible decision to limit the risk of people getting sick because of you, where possible. It’s that simple.

Fortunebiscuits · 30/09/2025 08:35

Three word username back at it!

Gizlotsmum · 30/09/2025 08:35

I can understand wanting to get going on a new fitness regime, but honestly I think you will burn out far quicker if you don’t listen to your body, take rest days and look after yourself. I do think there is a difference between having to do something ( go to work) and wanting to do something (gym). Ideally you would infect as few people as possible by staying home but appreciate that isn’t always possible.

ToutesetBonne · 30/09/2025 08:38

A friend of mine battled through in similar circumstances ('just a cold') and ended up with a heart transplant (previously perfectly well!), so please don't!

SatsumaDog · 30/09/2025 08:39

Stressing your body by exercising will slow down your recovery op. If you have to do anything, go for a short walk outside. You won’t do yourself (or anyone else) any favours by exercising when you’re sick.

canyon2000 · 30/09/2025 08:41

Can you get off the bus early and walk the extra bit home? That would be light exercise and the fresh air might make you feel a bit better.
