To cancel my gym class I’m booked into tonight?

I’ve woken up full of cold and I feel like shit. All I want is to crawl into bed, but needs must and I need to go to work. My gym asks that you avoid cancelling on the day of a class, but you have to do it more than 4 hours before the class if you’re going to. I’ll see if I can still go to the gym at all, because I know I’m being lazy if I don’t, but AIBU to break their policy and cancel?

I'm getting 'rage bait' vibes here but in case I'm wrong - stay away from the gym! My husband gets colds and I generally don't pick them up but that doesn't mean he doesn't have a cold and is not contagious!

Gymbunny2025 · 30/09/2025 08:52

Exercising when you’re ill isn’t recommended and can slow recovery (apparently?!). Go for a walk outside instead on your lunch break and get an early night. When I’ve tried to push myself when unwell I just find it too hard then end up feeling rubbish anyway! Plus no one at the gym wants your germs 😷

This is true of virus infections. No one is saying go to bed and do not move but apparently its to do with cytokine production.

I can’t justify skipping entirely - I feel like I’m just falling into old habits where I use any old excuse to not go. I can handle some gentle cardio and muscle training, but not a high intensity class. Just feel like a failure!

Stop passing your germs on to others its bloody selfish for one thing.

AndeanFlamingo · 30/09/2025 09:17

It's incredibly selfish to go to the gym when you're full of cold. If you really can't miss a day then exercise at home or outside until you're better.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 30/09/2025 09:18

You should 100% stay away from the gym OP.

”Woken up full of cold” means contagious. It doesn’t mean “oh the tail end of something I’ve had for ages and isn’t a bug” - it means full of germs.

For your own sake and health you should also cancel. Exercise is not the best thing for recovery, rest is.

Honestly, wanting to dramatically “crawl into bed” in one breath and then thinking you can go to the gym after a day of work in the next doesn’t make sense.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 30/09/2025 09:19

Also - what you can’t justify is going. Not staying away.

Think about other people rather than yourself. They do not want your cold.

jollygreenpea · 30/09/2025 09:25

FFS Op you didn't get to being obese over night, so going to one class is not going to get you to being your ideal weight.

Stop being so selfish and cancel the class. Let some germ free person take your place instead.

You can do exercise at home, you can go for a walk.

You can not out run a bad diet, that's where the real weight loss will happen.

I thought you were going to ask about going to work if you're feeling like crap, which if your are with other people that can not get away from your germs then you should avoid doing that as well.

nomas · 30/09/2025 09:27

SoftCyanWool · 30/09/2025 07:29

For what it’s worth I’m pretty sure it’s not contagious. I’ve felt run down for a week now and nobody around me has picked it up.

Of course you're contagious if you're full of cold.

I see you've cancelled it but you should never have been willing to inflict your cold germs on anyone else in the first place.

Harrysmummy246 · 30/09/2025 09:32

SoftCyanWool · 30/09/2025 08:43

But I will feel guilty. At home workouts just aren’t the same, no matter what they say on their YouTube videos they’re not.

No, not the same, but you've cancelled the class because it would be too much. Can you not see how contradictory and utterly unreasonable this is.
Plus aiming for every day but only started yesterday.
Ill but not ill. Which is it?

Give yourself a break pet and rest.

Offloadontome · 30/09/2025 09:46

I think being unwell would be an exception to cancelling with however much notice, if it's not possible. Just stay home and rest!

I thik you should go. Do not be lazy and infect everyone.

The fact that you’re experiencing this level of angst about one gym visit suggests you might be a bit over-obsessed. You’re talking about exercise like someone with an eating disorder talks about food.

You are unwell. You need to rest. Go for a walk or something for some fresh air.

And, as others have said, don’t spread your germs. Just because your immediate loved ones haven’t caught it, that doesn’t mean others won’t.

Are people not allowed to resume an exercise regime after a surgery?

I am unwell, but not deathly so - wouldn’t do a high intensity lifting class but can probably amaze the treadmill and some arm exercises at my own pace. There is nuance to life.

Walking is absolutely fantastic exercise

Well off you pop and do that then. You need to justify that to randoms on the Internet.

It gets to a point though. I’ve lost over seven stone with walking being my main exercise. It’s not sustainable for me anymore after this long term weight loss.

Thought you had a cold, now you've had surgery? Which is it?

I have a cold now.

I took 2 months off exercise prior to this due to surgery (and a holiday). As I have said. Multiple times.

Yes but there is such a thing as phased return and listening to your body.

Or just be contrary

I’m not sure I understand. If it’s working then keep doing it? Also I often feel much better after walking for an hour. It might even help with the cold.

Honestly it is great that you have lost so much weight and want to exercise but I do think you need to be careful. Surely it is better to have a programme that allows for rest days if you were at the gym yesterday then just walking today will be fine.
