To cancel my gym class I’m booked into tonight?

I’ve woken up full of cold and I feel like shit. All I want is to crawl into bed, but needs must and I need to go to work. My gym asks that you avoid cancelling on the day of a class, but you have to do it more than 4 hours before the class if you’re going to. I’ll see if I can still go to the gym at all, because I know I’m being lazy if I don’t, but AIBU to break their policy and cancel?

It’s not working anymore. That’s the entire point.

So crack on with whatever it is you want to do.

Honestly it is great that you have lost so much weight and want to exercise but I do think you need to be careful. Surely it is better to have a programme that allows for rest days if you were at the gym yesterday then just walking today will be fine.

The OP will reply with a no but yes but response.

YouCantParkThere · 30/09/2025 10:50

It’s just a cold. Just get on with your life.

BuildbyNumbere · 30/09/2025 11:10

I know, I’ll ask mumsnet a question and then argue with everyone that has a different opinion to me, or that doesn’t agree with me, and then do what I want to do anyway 🤦🏻‍♀️🤣

GAJLY · 30/09/2025 11:15

If I felt rough I wouldn't go, but would go for a walk instead.

frecklejuice · 30/09/2025 11:17

No one wants you at the gym, breathing heavily, touching equipment and spreading your germs! Just stay at home, I’ve spent the last week with what it sounds like you have now and I felt awful, don’t spread it around!

Biggles27 · 30/09/2025 11:20

I’d be furious if I turned up at the gym and the person next to was clearly unwell, spreading their germs.

I’m a carer for my elderly parents (daily care, several times a day, at least 8 hours a day). As they are extremely vulnerable and frail, if I pick up your illness, I’m not able to provide care and we have to get emergency paid carers in

obviously I can’t not ever go out in case I pick up germs and the gym is important for my mental health

ok so picking up germs is accidentally unavoidable but to deliberately spread germs is totally unacceptable.

SoftCyanWool · 30/09/2025 07:29

For what it’s worth I’m pretty sure it’s not contagious. I’ve felt run down for a week now and nobody around me has picked it up.

Yet.

Definitely cancel the gym - and also if you are feeling that awful you probably shouldn’t have gone to work.
You are doing no-one, including yourself, any favours by going to places when you’re ill - you only make things worse for all, and your body is telling you that you need to rest.

I have no choice. I can work. I cannot afford to lose wages.

Please cancel!

Ive walked out of my gym this morning when a lady has shown up, coughing, sneezing, spluttering everywhere. Shes told everyone she feels like shit and it feels more than a cold! I had covid last Xmas and was extremely unwell. I was in hospital for 18 and have been living with lkng covid all year. The start of this month I've been feeling like my old self but I feel vulnerable at rhe moment with so many people being ill. I still have breathing difficulties and reduced lung capacity and I really can't risk getting sick again.

Three word username back at it!

Aye. It getting tiresum

Emmz1510 · 30/09/2025 12:58

It’s a stupid rule for them to have because obviously people will become ill on the day and less than four hours before the class! They just mean they’ll keep your fee. Cancel.

firef1y · 30/09/2025 13:01

As a class instructor, please, please cancel.

But I will feel guilty. At home workouts just aren’t the same, no matter what they say on their YouTube videos they’re not.

This new “routine” of you gym attending has happened once Op.

it can’t be called a routine.

and if one day of going for a brisk walk (although you sounded like you were laid up in bed with a debilitating illness in your OP!) instead of the gym is going to derail your entire attempt to lose weight…. Well OP, I think you need to maybe plan a different approach if your commitment to this “routine” is so paper thin

Halfaday · 30/09/2025 13:38

You live with someone? What did they think you should do?

LivingDeadGirlUK · 30/09/2025 13:43

SoftCyanWool · 30/09/2025 08:16

Because I want to build a good habit, the gym is far away from my home where I work, so it’s Monday-Friday. I can’t get over there at the weekends as easily.

Honestly OP this is never going to work for you with the gym being far away. If you want to build a good habit go for a walk every day, you don't have to drive or anything to do it and then once you are committed to exercising every day you can mix in some exercise classes.

Gigglydancybox · 30/09/2025 15:34

So you have no qualms about going to work and spreading your germs, just doubting going to the gym? Hmm 🤦🏼‍♀️

TheNumberfaker · 30/09/2025 16:57

You shouldn’t exercise when you have a bad cold, your body needs to recover. It’s not wimping out or giving up on your exercise routine, it’s behaving like a responsible adult (both for your own health and. It spreading germs to others).
We have a similar policy at our gym, if you cancel within 4 hours of the session time, you have to pay a cancellation fee, so suck that up and cancel any other sessions planned for the next couple of days.
As for work, hopefully you’re not working with anyone too vulnerable. If you can wfh then do.

Cheeky19863 · 30/09/2025 22:18

YABU for asking stupid questions on Mumsnet. How do you get through life having to make every day decisions? Jesus wept

I can’t afford to miss £100 because of a cold.

I went to the gym, nobody died, and I’m feeling better today. I’ve not isolated myself from the world either!

You still went to the gym to spread your germs?

You may be feeling better but a handful of people might not feel great tomorrow.
