To cancel my gym class I’m booked into tonight?

SoftCyanWool · 30/09/2025 07:08

I’ve woken up full of cold and I feel like shit. All I want is to crawl into bed, but needs must and I need to go to work. My gym asks that you avoid cancelling on the day of a class, but you have to do it more than 4 hours before the class if you’re going to. I’ll see if I can still go to the gym at all, because I know I’m being lazy if I don’t, but AIBU to break their policy and cancel?

It’s hyperbole. I feel like shit. But that doesn’t make it
a major thing. I feel like shit, so what? I can still get out of bed and function.

so just… drama? Attention seeking?

Do you live alone?

XiCi · 30/09/2025 08:01

If you're desperate to do some form of exercise you don't need to go and infect everyone at the gym. You can literally step out the front door and have a brisk walk or do something more gentle online while you're feeling ill. Tai Chi or yin yoga for instance

SquishyGloopyBum · 30/09/2025 08:02

this is one of those odd AIBU where everyone agrees with your original question, but disagrees with you since.

Cancel the class but don’t go at all. How often do you go to the gym? Can you make up the missed session? It’s odd that you are being so inflexible about this. One missed class shouldn’t mean bad habits are creeping back in.

No? I said I feel like shit, but I’m not dying - both can be true.

I’m aiming to go everyday. Started my new routine yesterday. I can’t just give up today.

Please don’t be selfish and infect everyone by going to the gym.

Go for a walk if you feel you have to do something.

Op I don’t think anyone thought you were dying

as I say, this is silly

notacooldad · 30/09/2025 08:03

Honestly, you are being ridiculous 🙄
You are not lazy, falling g into old habits and all that bollocks.

You need to let your body recover and not spread germs.

In all honestly, I cant see why its a mumsnet question. You know how you feel, we dont. However, she since you've asked for advice why are you not taking it instead of coming back trying to justify yourself.

This is on you, go or don't. You know how well you feel.

Spanador · 30/09/2025 08:05

SoftCyanWool · 30/09/2025 07:43

It’s not worrying. I’m obese. I can’t just start skipping the gym for minor reasons.

What are you actually wanting from this thread? Your title was 'am I being unreasonable to cancel'. Everyone is saying that you should cancel, and yet you're arguing and saying you're not going to

Halfaday · 30/09/2025 08:05

So this new routine started… yesterday.

You have been to the gym ONCE

and here you are spending your morning having a peculiar chat with people who have no idea how ill you’re feeling about going back.

and throwing I. How you don’t think contagious is the icing on the cake

Ratafia · 30/09/2025 08:05

SoftCyanWool · 30/09/2025 07:17

I can’t justify skipping entirely - I feel like I’m just falling into old habits where I use any old excuse to not go. I can handle some gentle cardio and muscle training, but not a high intensity class. Just feel like a failure!

Look, avoiding infecting other people is not being lazy. Keep your bugs to yourself. You can always do a bit of exercise at home, there are some great videos on Youtube.

Ratafia · 30/09/2025 08:06

SoftCyanWool · 30/09/2025 07:29

For what it’s worth I’m pretty sure it’s not contagious. I’ve felt run down for a week now and nobody around me has picked it up.

Don't be silly. You must have caught it from someone, it didn't just appear out of the blue.

Nina1013 · 30/09/2025 08:06

sittingonabeach · 30/09/2025 07:58

Why did you post if you are not listening to anyone?

This.

It takes a long time to reach obesity. It’ll take time to lose the weight too. One day will make not even the slightest bit of difference - if anything, resting when not 100% will actually help you go back stronger next time.

If you let yourself be obsessed and fixated, to the point you’re posting things like this and ignoring every single person’s response, you’re going to crash and burn and probably end up bigger than when you started. Weight loss and lifestyle change should be treated as a marathon, not a sprint.

You started yesterday, when you'd already been feeling rough for a week? What was the point of that?

I’ve cancelled the class. I’m pushing back against the people who seem to think I should just bugger off home (which I have to do via public transport!)

Why every day from the start?
That's a sure fire way of giving up immediately anyway
Start with a couple of days a week and build up. When I started going I went 2 days a week and built up from there by adding an extra class every so often. You need rest days for recovery

dementedpixie · 30/09/2025 08:10

Nobody said to do nothing at all
Most people said to go for a walk or do some exercises at home
You're choosing not to listen to them and want to martyr yourself

InterestPiqued · 30/09/2025 08:10

What a lot of silly drama over nothing.

Nina1013 · 30/09/2025 08:10

I hosted a gathering last year (nothing fancy and 100% could have been rearranged!). A friend turned up clearly unwell. She thought this better than cancelling.

Everyone else was ok, but my immune system is poor. I ended up far, far worse than she was - almost hospitalised, I lost half a stone in 5 days, couldn’t swallow more than the tiniest sips of water and it was touch and go whether I would make it on holiday 10 days later. All because she didn’t want to cancel.

I love her, and she’s normally a lovely, thoughtful friend. I’ve never mentioned it, but obviously she’s aware because she knows how poorly I was etc. It still blows my mind to this day that she came, and as others have said - when you choose to spread your germs, you have no idea who will be receiving them and how the possibly minor illness in you will present in them.

You can't go to the class when you will pass the sickness on.
Two of DD'S friends wouldn't miss school for 100% attendance coughing, spluttering everywhere, head on desks all day, DD got sick, tested positive for covid, DS is immun-compromised. Stay at home.

Goditsmemargaret · 30/09/2025 08:14

Hang on. when I read you were going to the gym anyway I was actually thinking you should go and explain to the instructor you're going to take it easy because I'm all about building strong habits.

I run a hiit studio by the way and have helped hundreds of women lose substantial weight who have been obese for years.

BUT

Then I read you're planning to go everyday. You seriously need to cop on. You're setting yourself up to fail. Your body needs to recover from yesterday. Go for a gentle walk. Track your food. Drink water, get to bed early.

Three hiit sessions a week, improved eating habits and move your body everyday for the sake of moving it. That is all.

Good luck OP. You can do this.

SquishyGloopyBum · 30/09/2025 08:16

You shouldn’t be going every day anyway. You need to build in rest days.

you need to work on your mind set here.

Because I want to build a good habit, the gym is far away from my home where I work, so it’s Monday-Friday. I can’t get over there at the weekends as easily.

ShodAndShadySenators · 30/09/2025 08:17

Well, you've either got a cold and are therefore infectious - don't go to the gym and spread it around, or you haven't but you feel rubbish - go to work if you have to, skip the gym and rest to aid recovery.

When I get a cold I just stay in bed and rest as much as possible, knocks days off the total time spent full of cold (which used to be over a week, so big difference). You probably don't have this as an option, but resting instead of working out is a no-brainer. You won't get well quickly if you're pushing yourself.

It's annoying when we're determined to follow a path and feel illness is pushing us off that path. But it isn't. You're just pausing for a breather. You can pick the reins again when you feel better.
