To cancel my gym class I’m booked into tonight?

I’ve woken up full of cold and I feel like shit. All I want is to crawl into bed, but needs must and I need to go to work. My gym asks that you avoid cancelling on the day of a class, but you have to do it more than 4 hours before the class if you’re going to. I’ll see if I can still go to the gym at all, because I know I’m being lazy if I don’t, but AIBU to break their policy and cancel?

Speaking as someone who goes to the gym a lot, (most days for one thing or another) I think this is a bit of a worrying mindset op.

One missed session - that will be severely sub optimal anyway - will not negate all your hard work.

My PT would be telling you not to go. And so am I. And that’s without the issue of spreading germs.

It’s not worrying. I’m obese. I can’t just start skipping the gym for minor reasons.

Go for a walk outside instead. No-one is going to thank you turning up ill

XiCi · 30/09/2025 07:45

Just go then. It will compromise your immune system more, take longer for you to recover from your cold and potentially infect many others at the gym but you seem to have justified this to yourself already so crack on. No idea why you posted.

Allschoolsareartschools · 30/09/2025 07:46

This reads like you need everyone to tell you its ok to not do a gym class when feeling ill to ease some sort of guilt?

Honestly please stop trying to force yourself.
Good habits are great but this sounds borderline unhealthy & obsession like.

Rest days are so important & you can start again when you feel better.

YouTube workout at home or a walk for the next couple of days. Or nothing!! You probably feel crap because you're forcing yourself to exercise when you need to rest. This sort of regime can't last.

Try to find a healthy balance.

DDivaStar · 30/09/2025 07:47

You literally wrote 'I've woken up full of cold' thats contagious!

You were run down and the cold probably feels worse because of this. Give your body a break, take a walk or gentle jog if you don't want to be sitting around.

No one will thank you for spreading your germs.

Well reread your op

one minute you sound as being almost bed bound

and now you’re thinking it’s a minor reason

I go to the gym for cardiac rehab, getting ill makes my heart condition worse. Go for a walk/jog outside and spare the other gym goers

moresoup · 30/09/2025 07:48

When you are ill, your body needs to rest. The most you should do is a gentle walk or a bit of stretching at home.
That's not giving up, it's taking care of yourself.

Plus you want to build sustainable habits not crash and burn

I feel like crap. But I’m still able to get out of bed. That is a minor reason.

Im obese too. I will still miss classes if I'm unwell. Obesity is related more to what you eat than the exercise you do. Go for a walk if you feel you still need to do something

You can't out run a bad diet.
To lose weight it's your diet you need to focus on.

You want to build healthy and sustainable habits so that means resting when ill. Take it from me . I kept exercising through illness and now have chronic fatigue

You got out of bed because you need to go to work

Don’t go if you feel like crap it is selfish. Go for a walk or do a home work out if you can’t miss a day. You could be putting people who are at the gym recovering after illness at risk and ruining the hard work of others. Just do something at home. It won’t hurt you for a few days.

SagittariusDwarf · 30/09/2025 07:52

Good lord, why is thi even a question? I don't know how some people get through the day.

Enjoy spreading your germs to unsuspecting people at the gym 🙄

autienotnaughty · 30/09/2025 07:52

My gym we can cancel anytime, it triggers an automatic email to those on the wait list so they can book on.

good grief

the drama op

this is silly

presumably you barely have an appetite? So you’ll lose weight today anyway.

One minute massive hyperbole re how you’re feeling, the next… no biggie

Halfaday · 30/09/2025 07:52

Just don’t scoff your face today, crack on with work and reschedule the class

BitOutOfPractice · 30/09/2025 07:53

SoftCyanWool · 30/09/2025 07:43

Being ill is not a minor reason. Skipping one session will not make you put weight on.

Signed, an overweight gym goer.

Look I know you feel that you have to be 100% focused or it’ll all go to shit. But trust me, it won’t. Your fitness and wellBeings a lifelong journey, one day will not make the impact you think.

Why not do some recovery stretching at home if you feel you must.

It’s hyperbole. I feel like shit. But that doesn’t make it
a major thing. I feel like shit, so what? I can still get out of bed and function.

TigerRag · 30/09/2025 07:55

Why did you post if you're just going to ignore everyone? You may have a minor cold but for someone like me with asthma, that makes me unwell for 2-3 weeks

SoftCyanWool · 30/09/2025 07:55

dementedpixie · 30/09/2025 07:51

Yes, but clearly I’m not dying if I can get out of bed!

SoftCyanWool · 30/09/2025 07:55

Yes, but clearly I’m not dying if I can get out of bed!

But that doesn’t mean it’s ok to risk spreading your germs at the gym, even if you don’t think you’re contagious. Go for a fast walk. Do press ups or step ups at home.

itsgettingweird · 30/09/2025 07:58

Ours have a wait list for classes so although they ask you don’t cancel another patron will be glad if you do!

You cannot foresee illness with a 24 hour period in advance!

For some, a cold might be a minor illness…….for anyone who is immunocompromised it can be very serious! Please do not go to the gym and spread your germs around in the environment and on the equipment. It won’t kill you to stay home and exercise but a common cold can be devastating for those vulnerable people who have underlying medical conditions.
Do the right thing and keep your germs to yourself.
