The council should be taking down England flags in public places?

I have driven through a couple of areas in the last few days where England flags are being displayed on public lamp posts, it makes me feel very uncomfortable and unwelcome in the area and I think gosh I’m glad I don’t live here, but why are the council not taking them down?

I suspect you'll find your answer one one of the other 10000 flag threads.

I imaging it’s because the council are just one small team of people and the public are one very large scale of people who will just put them back up again.

InsectsMatter · 26/09/2025 12:49

its not the councils job.
Away with your goady thread.

Tagyoureit · 26/09/2025 12:50

Cost! Plain and simple!

Because they’re back up again within an hour. Does your local council have the funding and resources to send someone out to repaint the same road markings or take flags off the same lampposts every day? Mine certainly doesn’t

Why don’t you take them down yourself if they bother you?

Yogabearmous · 26/09/2025 12:50

We live in England , I expect to see English flags … in Scotland I saw Scottish flags .

Mycatmyworld · 26/09/2025 12:51

It’s actually illegal to do anything to a lamppost without prior permission

MidnightPatrol · 26/09/2025 12:52

I think it’s a bad precedent for councils to be obliged remove England flags, in England.

That’s giving in to the idea it’s just a ‘far right symbol’ of some sort.

Let’s be proud to be English. By reacting in panic and pulling them down, you only cement the idea the flag is a negative thing.

fourfoxsakes · 26/09/2025 12:52

I would if I could reach them !

No they shouldn’t. I don’t want them wasting time and money on such a trivial matter.

1apenny2apenny · 26/09/2025 12:53

Why does the flag of the country you live in make you feel uncomfortable? This is about your feelings being negative about it. What about those that just see a flag. Will the flags at the rugby this afternoon make you feel uncomfortable? What do you feel when you see the Palestinian flags that also seem
to be everywhere?

Get a ladder.

fourfoxsakes · 26/09/2025 12:54

Because it’s quite clear what the England flag represents at the moment and why people are putting them up

Palestinian flags and Ukrainian flags all fine. Scottish flags fine.

Just the England flag unacceptable. Can’t be demonstrating you support for England in England.

Get a ladder.

And a life.

SheepShankers · 26/09/2025 12:55

Even if councils weren’t desperately under resourced to meet even their statutory duties, they still have to walk the tightrope of being accused of taking away freedoms of speech.

In our area the council will only take down flags if they are in a dangerous position, for fear of stoking the situation further.

crazeekat · 26/09/2025 12:56

Because it is allowed! It is the flag of the country! If it makes you uncomfortable don’t be there. Your racist views are not welcome.

fourfoxsakes · 26/09/2025 12:56

If anyone put one on my street I would climb up and remove it

I don't think that it's clear at all. Why can't people display the flag of the country they are in? As a pp said, you would expect to see a Welsh flag in Wales, or the Saltire in Scotland.

Tiredofwhataboutery · 26/09/2025 12:57

Do you think the council just has spare bodies hanging around? These will be folk taken away from the garden team (probably) who already have a long list of jobs to do.

If they are off on flag removal then other (essential) stuff doesn’t get done. Surely folk would rehang them anyway. Personally I think they should just whack a flag up outside every public building with a flagpole.

Project reclaim the flag. Ridiculous to hsve a national flag as a racist symbol. Surely if flag is normalised itd be better?

Well in Salford a worker got his ladder taken away as someone was worried he was taking a flag off a telegraph pole - so that’s one reason not to (he wasn’t but that shouldn’t matter)
Some councils do and some have said they won’t - think all have their own reasonable reasons/explanations for their individual decisions.
I think they’re abhorrent how they’re being used - it’s disingenuous to say pride in U.K. or England, if they had that they would be litter picking not running round with flags and throwing stuff at protests.
if you ask the whole street then the whole street likely doesn’t want them, but don’t want to have hassle either.
I think they’ll hopefully die down soon and fall off into the gutter - when the council will have to clear them up - wasting local council tax payers cash - sigh.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 26/09/2025 13:07

They're everywhere now, I saw an army Land-rover with a big one painted on it.

Northquit · 26/09/2025 13:07

Sir Starmer is reclaiming the flag so you can all be proud of them any day now.

Why on earth would you dislike the flag of this country being flown in this country?

RoseAlone · 26/09/2025 13:08

I agree 100% then need to be removed and the culprits cautioned with hate crime or incitement. It's disgusting
