The council should be taking down England flags in public places?

fourfoxsakes · 26/09/2025 12:45

I have driven through a couple of areas in the last few days where England flags are being displayed on public lamp posts, it makes me feel very uncomfortable and unwelcome in the area and I think gosh I’m glad I don’t live here, but why are the council not taking them down?

No need for snobbery

It isn't snobbery at all. I'm referring to the areas which have form for voting for far right parties.

My 20yo tells me that racism is incredibly common amongst young people these days.

That's terribly sad. How far we have regressed. Im not surprised though. The pendulum always swings back. Young people are probably fed up of being taught to be ashamed of being white or if they aren't white, to blame white people for colonialism. Or to be anti semitic.

The way forward is to teach pride in our collective nationality symbolised by a flag. Not teach kids to be ashamed of it and rip it down and go back to their own little groups.

No, the way forward is to teach people not to be racist. But that's very difficult when the adults around them are unable to model a society without racism.

Dogsandhens · 26/09/2025 14:38

So what you are saying is that poor people are racist? Or poor people shouldn't be allowed to fly the flag of their nation?

No. I am saying people denying that there is a clear demographic are wrong. I don't know why it is that way but it is.

And no, I don't think the flag should be put up at midnight by (mainly) men hiding their faces (why?)

Pride in the country is surely a 24 hour thing not a sneaky hobby to do when you can't be seen? Maybe they're so patriotic they've spent their days looking after the community in general and can only get out at that time......

Ablushingcrow · 26/09/2025 14:47

I suggest you stop being goady and get a grip.

Hang on. This is weird. You were talking about particular roads you drive down rather than specific constituencies. How do you know they mostly vote for far right parties? Are they all your friends and they tell you so?

Certain roads vote a certain way 🤣. Apparently. The Red Wall takes on a different meaning...

I'm not talking about whole constituencies, I'm talking about particular wards. I don't know what it is like where you live, but it is very well known in my community where support for the far right is concentrated. Is it coincidence that the flags have popped up primarily in these areas at exactly the same time as Tommy Robinson is urging people to put them up? I don't think so.

Do you think the council just has spare bodies hanging around? These will be folk taken away from the garden team (probably) who already have a long list of jobs to do.

If they are off on flag removal then other (essential) stuff doesn’t get done. Surely folk would rehang them anyway. Personally I think they should just whack a flag up outside every public building with a flagpole.

Project reclaim the flag. Ridiculous to hsve a national flag as a racist symbol. Surely if flag is normalised itd be better?

Agree with this.
We shouldn't be ashamed of our flag, if every public building, church tower, mosque etc flew it then it would help reclaim it and dilute its perception as a symbol of hate/racism.

No. It's very hard when young people are taught to be ashamed of their skin colour if they are white. Or to be ashamed of their ancestors pasts, without exception, no matter what the past of their ancestors actually was. Or for kids to be shown that anti semetism is perfectly acceptable and you can go on horrible marches each week and scare Jewish people and that's absolutely fine. No one is exactly giving young children a good example to follow in not being racist these days let's face it!!

I think you're prejudiced. And unfortunately it makes you sound a snob. Sorry. I think far better that people try and understand each other rather than leap to judge them.

You try being at university in Yorkshire, brand new halls, £180 per week, boasting a gym and social activities on the ground floor. Cinema room. You weren't allowed in them of course because certain overseas students had claimed them so you didn't get admission. Try complaining to Unite who just shrugged their shoulders.

And god help you if there was spare accommodation in your seven room flat. They'd move in and take over the kitchens.

Notmycircusnotmyotter · 26/09/2025 14:58

Ours is flooded with them but I actually really like seeing the Union Jacks fluttering in the breeze

FanFckingTastic · 26/09/2025 15:01

The flags have appeared in those areas of town...

We're not all a stupid as the brainless flag flyers!

Most of them don't have 2 brain cells to rub together and probably barely worked a day in their life.

Its are flag and u r the rasist one for not bein prahd of bein english (or something)

It's nasty, sneering comments like this that (in my opinion) are fueling division. People talk of despising hatred and racism, but are very happy to engage in prejudice and stereotyping themselves.

Cost! Plain and simple!

Bad optics too. Removing English flags from English soil. Scared of backlash

BeardofHagrid · 26/09/2025 15:02

Oh, I know, the flags are such a worry. Not like Fuhrer Starmer’s digital identity app which is for the good of us all.

BettysRoasties · 26/09/2025 15:05

Our council have said they will only remove those deemed dangerous and our mayor has thrown his support behind the flags.

I'm not the one judging people as "far right" because of the road they live in.

And I bet by "far right" you just mean Reform!!

Bumblebee72 · 26/09/2025 15:08

Only in England are we meant to feel ashamed of our flag. Most countries have their national flag flying everywhere.

Where did I say that everyone living on those roads is far right?

Clue: I didn't.

I would if I could reach them !

Follow the Lib Dems and embrace the England flag just like the Spice Girls reclaimed the Union Jack. Reactions like yours will sendbmore people to Reform.

BeMintFatball · 26/09/2025 15:12

@fourfoxsakes I’m white and British. I hate the weaponisation of the Union flag.

Seeing the flag hung from bedroom windows during the football used to make me happy. It was a positive thing. But this lamppost thing is awful.

But you said...

"areas in my community which I know well. Roads I drive down regularly. It is abundantly clear that the flags attached to lampposts and painted onto roundabouts are a direct response to the Tommy Robinson campaign".

"The flags have appeared in THOSE (you put in italics)areas of town..."

" it is very well known in my community where support for the far right is concentrated."

"I'm referring to the areas which have form for voting for far right parties."
