The council should be taking down England flags in public places?

I have driven through a couple of areas in the last few days where England flags are being displayed on public lamp posts, it makes me feel very uncomfortable and unwelcome in the area and I think gosh I’m glad I don’t live here, but why are the council not taking them down?

I had abuse hurled at me and something thrown at my car because I drove over a pedestrian crossing where some arseholes had just been doing their patriotic duty and painting the flag. Now I have red paint all over my fucking tyres!

I read that as you drove over a pedestrian 😆. One that had been crossing.

It’s actually illegal to do anything to a lamppost without prior permission

this. It’s not the union flag that irks me (well does a bit) it’s that it’s bloody vandalism on a large scale. and as such should be stopped.

they are also cheap flags with cable ties and will just come off in the bad weather and then there will be straggly flags everywhere.

MyLimeGuide · 29/09/2025 07:55

I noticed yesterday someone has put up an arsenal flag?! Is that Tottenham prejudice or what??

Mycatmyworld · 29/09/2025 10:02

They put Union Jack flags up & they are never the right way, that’s a pet irritation of mine

English people have a right to put flags where they want. If we were in Germany german flags would be everywhere. Its people proud of culture. Personally, i admire it, it doesnt offend me.

German flags really aren't everywhere in Germany. Given their history, flag-waving outside of sporting events is viewed with deep suspicion in Germany.

I do wonder how much travelling the various posters claiming "in other countries..." have actually done. If they've been abroad at all, they certainly haven't been far from capital cities and tourist areas. I've been to 30 countries and the only place that was particularly big on flags was Republila Srpska - the Serb seperatist part of Bosnia. The people flying those are the people who were on the killing side of the Bosnian genocide. Otherwise flags are just confined to capital cities, tourist areas and public buildings. In Riga I did observe that virtually every Latvian flag was paired with a Ukrainian flag. All three Baltic states are solid supporters of Ukraine.

Norway loves a flag in the garden.

Really? Got any examples on Streetview? I've been sticking pins into built-up areas at random and haven't found one yet.

Nor for that matter have I found any cable-tied to lampposts.

🤣If you know Norway you know! They love their flag. They even decorate their cakes with it. And many gardens have their own flagpoles

I didn't manage to find one. But as I said, I don't mind people doing things properly. Bodging things on the cheap looks awful. I do also suspect the motives of those who don balaclavas and shin up lampposts in the dead of night. Particularly if it only occurred to them to do so in the last month or so. I would also have less difficulty in believing that they have pride in their country if they made an attempt to tidy it up. Organise a community litter-pick, pull some weeds, maybe even stand for election to the local council.

In Norway they also throw strings of flags over their Christmas trees. Well they used to anyway. Very untidy. You wouldn't like it. I do though.

It did amuse me, the thought of you scouring Google earth for a picture of a flagpole in Norway. Thank you for the image. I promise it's true. They need them for the 17th May and whenever else they feel like being patriotic.

Fascinating, I've just looked it up. I do like bunting, and Christmas trees work well as a combination. I notice that they take it all the way to the top, rather than stopping halfway. They must have ladders long enough for the job.

But nothing cable-tied to lampposts or painted on zebra crossings?

I'm not personally hung up on where the flags go on a lampost so haven't noticed. Bit too specific.

Anyway my point is that Norway is a brilliant country and they are proud of their flag and fly it all the time. And why wouldn't they. I presume some people are squeamish in the UK because they don't think it's a brilliant country and therefore we shouldn't be proud of our flag and shouldn't fly it. I suppose compared to Norway they have a point at the moment. Maybe under Labour there's no point being proud of the UK and we just have to wait for a new government.

LostFuse · 30/09/2025 08:45

This whole flag-shagging nonsense is getting out of hand. There's nothing wrong with being proud of your country, but this isn't that.
We all know, deep down that no matter how much people deny it and argue about it, the recent appearance of the majority of these flags, and the clowns painting roundabouts, and also daubing a red cross on the front sign of a hotel hosting refugees, that this is really all about making refugees and other non-white people feel unwelcome and uncomfortable.

Edited

There was plenty of time to get the half-arsed flags up and daubed onto roads, signs and trees before Labour were elected. Our love of our home country simply isn't rooted in that kind of display.
For me, it's about cultural norms. Some places really do love their national flag. In the UK, the majority aren't that bothered, and are happy to save it for civic buildings and special occasions. Historically we have prided ourselves on understatement. And this is anything but understated. It's tacky and cheap.

Elseaknows · 01/10/2025 07:16

My neighbour has decided to put a flag up outside my house, on the lamp post directly outside my window. He's not patriotic. He's a prat. Its not very patriotic to try and intimidate or spread hatred. Our other neighbour is Polish. Their kids constantly bully the Polish child. He's done it "for the English people because this is OUR street". He's "protecting our women and girls", despite him being the biggest threat to the women on our road with his previous DV charges (especially when hes drunk and coked up). Patriotic my arse.

Nothavingagoodvalentinesday · 12/05/2026 03:06

The St George’s flag is the flag of England. Nothing more nothing less. If you see more significance in it that is your problem.

I agree 100% then need to be removed and the culprits cautioned with hate crime or incitement. It's disgusting

Jesus. Flying your countries flag now is a hate crime? Seriously?

Swiftie1878 · 12/05/2026 08:20

With the World Cup coming up, the haters had better brace themselves!

Illegally attaching it to a lampost isn't patriotic.

The local idiot men are still doing our town and leaving a mess everywhere. If they want a flag they can put one up in their garden. Not ruin our town.
