To have let friend down last minute with dog sitting

The arrangement was I’d dog sit for 4 days, dog has always been fed on dry dog food no issues and I wasn’t expected to do anything more than feed, walk, look after him. With a week to go I’ve just had a message explaining his new diet (raw!!! With all theses extra things eggs sweet potato vegetable and some kind of oil!) I can’t cope with that as I’m vegetarian and autistic and have issues around food smells!

There’s also a grooming appt ??! That I’m expected to take him to. I’ve said it’s not going to be possible for me to facilitate the raw feeding or the appointment. This has caused a massive issue as friend wasn’t prepared to back down so I’ve said ‘sorry you’ll have to make alternative arrangements’ AIBU ? It’s been arranged for months and I even saw them last week and nothing was mentioned then but apparently he’s been on this new diet for a while ??

No, no and no. People are becoming over obsessed with their pets. Treating them like humans

A lot more of a faff with raw food and you have to get the ratio correct. Who the hell arranges a dog grooming session if away totally unacceptable! It can wait surely until she gets back. She must think you’ve got nothing else to do!

Your 'friends' have totally taken you for granted! Their attitude is outrageous - people who have pets with high maintenance care needs, should book professional pet sitters for them. Not rely on friends for what is a massive favour, even without the whole raw food aspect and then dump a load of additional responsibilities on them!
Thru font even respect you enough to ask - they've just made these changes and effectively told you to suck it up, like you are their employee!

It's too bad your friend didn't tell you in advance, knowing that you're vegetarian, and she could've arranged alternative care.

I'm vegetarian and look after DN's dog. It's bad enough giving him cooked chicken. I'd really struggle with raw. YANBU.

This is why I feed my dog kibble and won't let him sleep in our bed (much as dh would like), Totally unfair on people who have to look after him.

Unrulyscrumptious · 29/09/2025 13:07

I think you're both being a bit unreasonable. Your friend needs to prep prep her dogs food so there's minimal handling or involvement from yourself and she needs to reschedule the groomers. For yourself, I'm also autistic and have sensory issues so I'm aware we're all different but..if you can handle all the other sensory issues involved in looking after a dog I can't understand why plopping some food into a bowl is any different? Whether the meat is raw or cooked, you're always dishing up a meat derivative when your previously looked after the dog. I think changing plans last minute is and form from both you and your friend.

I think the least she could do (I would do This) is bag up meals for the time he is with you. Then you just need to put it in the bowl- veggie or not.

The grooming thing she should have asked you first. If it was within walking distance it wouldn’t bother me and I was free to do it?

What happened in the end?
