Has anyone had any woo experiences, particularly if it's something/someone you've seen? I know that not everyone believes, just I've had some odd experiences myself and it makes me wonder. Especially with Halloween next month and it being a little while since we've had a woo thread. Would love to hear your stories!

one Sunday I was looking at some family photos and then put them in a pile by the side of the sofa. On the Wednesday morning I got up and a photo of my dad was sitting in the middle of the plain carpet . I asked my husband if he’d been going through the photos, he said no. I explained why I was asking and he’d gone to bed after me and the photo wasn’t in the middle of the floor when he went to bed . It was 6 months to the day that my father had died.
11 years later my mother passed away and on her 6 month anniversary in the middle of the carpet was a photo of her holding me as a baby. This photo was on a shelf no where near where it was laying. It was sort of round the corner and by the side of the sofa. I hadnt taken it off the shelf since I’d put it there after mum had died. I took it as a sign that they were both ok and letting me know that.

I'm interested as well. I'm sort of familiar with the Pagan belief umbrella and way of life. Not sure that I understand what someone would mean by occultist and very interested to hear what a communication with a deity would be like. Especially biggies, Mercury and Venus, how did you know it was them, what was the experience like? Genuine question.

@Hoolahoophop

Regarding Paganism it's a very large umbrella term for numerous Pagan faiths. Some are very modern such as Wicca (Neo-Paganism as a movement really only began as such in the twentieth century, although it does have roots and influences from the earlier pagan practices of before.

Some people practice forms of paganism specific to particular pantheons and cultures. Some of those practices and beliefs have survived as living traditions and there is now a revival of sorts going on. Personally, I am more interested in pursuing Celtic paganism, as a I have more of an interest in the Irish and Welsh deities, but obviously I don't restrict myself to deities from those pantheons.

An occultist would be anyone who practices some form of occultism and who identifies themselves as such. Occultism covers a broad area of subjects - magic/witchcraft, divination, various kinds of spirit work, necromancy, etc.

Re. Mercury and Venus, I don't know that it was a communication from them, it's a matter of belief. After reading the Orphic hymns to them and giving offerings, I meditated and asked them to communicate with me. I'm trying to hone my psychic/clairaudience senses in order to better perceive communication from spirits of all kinds.

All I can say is that when seeking communication with deities and trying to get into a light trance, there have been some occasions when words and phrases have come into my head - and it doesn't FEEL like it's come from my own mind/consciousness. It just feels different, such as when I asked Hekate for advice as to how I might get better at communicating with the dead and I received the advice "Spend more time in cemeteries."

Is anyone following the countdown to Halloween that Danny Robins is doing? Some delightful creepy uncanny nuggets.

Yes, I am! I went to see the Uncanny Live show on Tuesday as well - absolutely brilliant, with some genuinely scary audience stories as well as the pre-prepared cases.

FurForksSake · 09/10/2025 12:56

I wish I could have seen it, I can’t sit for long enough in a theatre at the moment. I was very tempted.

BellaPommefritio · 09/10/2025 13:51

Spiderlight, can you share some of the good Uncanny audience stories please!

I agree and I have "know it all's" in my own family who look down on anything like that and claim there must be a rational/simple scientific explanation (and yet they cant give me one).
I dont get in any arguments, no point.

And as someone already mentioned CurlewKate, I remembered that name - very annoying poster constantly commenting on everyone's experiences in a dismissive, rude way. Please leave this thread!

On the religion threads too. People discussing aspects of Christianity [insert relevant religion] don't need to be informed that there isn't a sky fairy and implying some sort of mental deficiency. Just as I could go on a thread celebrating Formula 1 and say how mind-numbingly boring it is watching cars go round and round and round a track. But I don't, and most of us don't. But I suspect that it's too tempting to want to prove how superior one is with one's scientific beliefs.

mapleriver · 09/10/2025 16:33

I have two strange ones, but they're not very scary. They definitely made me wonder about the other side - in general I'm sceptical.

The first time I was in a place I used to walk my dogs every day, it's on a hill and I was in the middle of it, but there were no trees for me to miss anyone being there. Just meadow. It was 2pm in April - not a creepily lit time of day. I heard a quiet but clear voice saying "Oh no, don't go there..." as if someone was maybe 10ft behind me. It creeped me out enough to make me leave quickly and I'm completely comfortable being in the woods at night without a moon from my rabbiting days so I'm not easily unsettled.

I got home fine without anything else, cleaned off my dogs and got ready to take the other one out alone (I'd just recently bought her, and didn't let her run with my other dogs yet as I didn't trust her.) Midway through my stroll with the other dog we were viciously attacked by a pack of large bandogs. We were both badly bitten and my dog was mauled to the point of almost losing two legs, but luckily neither of us died and I'm not sure how.

I still wonder if that voice was warning me not to go to the other place afterwards, and if somehow there was some intervention that meant we made it out alive. The vet was also shocked my dog lived.

The second time my mother was on home hospice with lung cancer. I had been sitting with her for two weeks and on Christmas Eve she died when everyone but me had left the room. After I left my parents house after she had died, I couldn't sleep thinking of what had happened. It was around 2-3am and I had been trying to sleep for two hours so I decided to go out on a walk so I wasn't just laying there thinking about it.

Midwalk I started ugly crying again, and was looking up at the sky trying to bargain with something that it was all just a bad dream. One of my dogs started pulling really hard and I thought it was an early hedgehog or something like that, but when I looked down there was a white pigeon/dove just walking on the ground and cooing. I thought it was injured to be out so early and walking around instead of roosting somewhere or sitting, afaik pigeons don't like strolling around in the dark. So I walked up to it slowly to try and pick it up and it just kept walking away but cooing for around 5 minutes.

Eventually after following it, it flew away, and my mind had been taken off my mother worrying about this stupid pigeon walking around at night. I'd never seen one before in the area, and never seen one since. Sometimes I wonder if one of my relatives was trying to make me feel better. My mother whenever she would see white feathers in the garden would say it made her think of my grandmother, so it definitely makes me wonder if there's anything else out there.

CarrieWasReal · 09/10/2025 19:06

@mapleriver What interesting stories, thank you for sharing!
I must admit I'd never heard of a bandog. I just looked them up. The stuff of nightmares!!!!!! 😨😨😨 Glad you and your dog made it out OK.

I once pulled the shower curtain back after finishing my shower (over bath type), and as I did, an empty toilet roll dropped down from the air above me. Another time it was a pair of tweezers that fell down in front of me. Both times, bathroom door locked. And before anyone suggests I must have been in some sort of trance, and balanced them on the shower rail myself, whence they then fell off, à la Ciáran O'Keeffe, I'm 5' 0", I can't even reach the shower rail. I have to get DH to change the curtains. So no. 'Twas most odd.

I had an odd experience in the bathroom the other day.
We have a frameless shower screen and on top of it sits a towel hook, very similar to the one in the link below.
While I was having a shower it suddenly sort of snapped off and fell on the floor. I hadn’t touched it, and didn’t slide down on the side of the shower screen or anything.
Not sure how exactly it had lifted itself off the top of the shower screen.

@UnctuousUnicorns- that's just reminded me of something. I was once walking DS home from school when he was in Y5 and a blue rubber ball dropped straight down in front of us, completely vertically, as if it has fallen from the sky, and bounced -again completely vertically -several times, as if someone was bouncing it with their hand. It was so odd - it stopped us both dead in our tracks. It definitely hadn't been dropped out of a high window - we were walking past the bungalow at the top of our road at the time and there was nobody else in sight. We brought the ball home to have a proper look at it and it was just a perfectly ordinary rubber ball.

I've heard of 2 very similar stories. One was a friend. Keys they'd lost fell in front of them in their house! Another was ds1 and his friend were outside my back. A large white stone fell in front of them straight down. There was no way anyone could have dropped it? And any bird would have to have been big.
I had something a bit similar but not necessarily weird. I was out back talking to a neighbour and something dropped. I looked down and it was a capsule of oil (evening primrose type) No idea about that. Maybe there's aliens making themselves invisible and playing tricks? If they're out there please help sort our shit out instead of messing about dropping stuff 😅

Whowhatwhere21 · 10/10/2025 23:29

The only strange thing to happen to us, we haven't been able to explain still. We usually sit in bed watching telly at night with a bedside lamp on each. At least a few times a week the lamp on my partners side will dim up and down several times.

One night a couple of years ago, both fast asleep, middle of the night, no lights on. There was a huge crash in the bedroom that had us both wide awake. His lamp had turned on and was dimming up and down again, I turned my lamp on so we could see what the crash was. His bedside drawers had moved forward away from the wall by a couple of foot, both drawers on it wide open and it had also fell forward and was just there resting at an angle, with the open drawers touching the floor propping the whole thing up from being totally drawer side down flat on the floor. His lamp, fan, phone and charging station had fallen off the bedside drawers, however they hadn't fallen forward like the direction the drawers had, they had all fallen behind it.
It's never happened since but his lamp dimming still does.

UnctuousUnicorns · 10/10/2025 23:45

Re lamps dimming - one evening I was in our bedroom, alone, the door shut. Our ceiling light is controlled by a round dimmer switch that you turn from off to full brightness. It's not one that that you push on/off.

Anyway, the light was on its dimmest setting i.e. it was turned as much anti clockwise as it could be, without being turned off altogether. I knocked a beaker, off the desk beside our bed, onto the bed, spilling a bit of clear apple juice onto the bed. It was too late to start changing bed linen, so I went to mop up the spill with something absorbent, meaning to change the bed the next day. As I did, the room suddenly became very bright. I went over to the dimmer knob - it had been turned all the way up, as far as it would go, to full brightness. 🤷‍♀️

I’m always a little reluctant to share my experience as it was like a living horror movie and acutely traumatising. I’m a year out of it. My ex husband was possessed by jinn (demons) following a campaign of black magic, known as sihr in Islam. They’d come every night for 6 months and talk through his mouth in different dialects using very old, formal words. They’d use sophisticated language that my ex (not his first language) wouldn’t know the meaning of - so I know he wasn’t just acting. They’d torment me, calling me names and threaten us. The room would go cold, then his eyes would glaze over and then he’d start growling, then they’d talk. I’d recite Quran as we have verses (almost like an excorcism) to repel Jinn and they’d laugh at me as my recitation isn’t good. It was horrific. We had a few scholars come and deal with it, and eventually it stopped when we got divorced. The aim of black magic in Islam is usually to split couples up. I know for a fact it was true and real as I have so many videos, things would move across the room on their own, all witnessed by my builders at the time as we were having work done. They thought the whole thing was terrifying - and it was. Ghosts are fully explained in the Islamic tradition as Jinn who can shape shift. We believe there are good jinn who just get on with their business and we usually can’t see them and they us. But there is also bad jinn who do this kind of spiritual harassment. The black magic was put on us by a cousin of my ex who was jealous of our financial position at the time. The jinn told me who did it, giving all kinds of information that nobody else knew, even my ex. My ex would have no recollection of these incidents afterwards. I’d find all kinds of knots, animal sacrifices, burnt Qurans buried in the garden, which is how black magic works in our tradition. I’m usually a very logical person but this was so scary. The worse was they’d throw him across the room before my eyes, and once this caused him to pass out. I even called the Police at one point as I was at my wits end. They obviously thought it mental health but it wasn’t. Horror movies have scenes like this because this stuff is real. Very very rare. But real. I’m actually not scared of The Occult and ghosts/jinn now I’ve lived through it. And I’m less scared of dying too. There is obviously a lot I’ve condensed but I’m happy to answer questions. I’m quite the expert on jinn now. 😂

Cheeseanddigestivebiscuits · 11/10/2025 00:54

Lurker here. Not sure this counts. I was thinking a couple me and DP know would break up (I think they would be happier split up) but today my DP told me that a different couple who we are friends with have split up. I’m a bit worried that I somehow manifested it?

YumYa · 11/10/2025 08:34

@Letsformanallegiance you should make s film about it 😅

@Cheeseanddigestivebiscuits couples split all the time. Even the ones you'd never expect to.

unsurewhattodoaboutit · 11/10/2025 09:18

@Letsformanallegiancethat sounds absolutely horrific! I was aware of the word jinn but didn’t really know much about it. It’s very interesting ( and horrendous).

I suggest you look up what proportion of marriages end in divorce, lest you get too hung up on the power of your mind.

CarrieWasReal · 11/10/2025 11:05

@Whowhatwhere21 Your bedside cupboard incident is a bit like my bedroom door incident (related upthread)!

Re odd lamp behaviour, there is an interesting tale online that began as a Reddit post (below is part of the original post) and was made popular by Mr Ballen, who tells it as a story on YouTube.

I met a wonderful young lady, she made my heart skip and my face red, I pursued her for months and dispatched a few jerk boyfriends before I finally won her over, after two years we got married and almost immediately she bore me a daughter.
I had a great job and my wife didn't have to work outside of the house, when my daughter was two she [my wife] bore me a son. My son was the joy of my life, I would walk into his room every morning before I left for work and doted on him and my daughter.
One day while sitting on the couch I noticed that the perspective of the lamp was odd, like inverted. It was still in 3D but... just.. wrong. (It was a square lamp base, red with gold trim on 4 legs and a white square shade). I was transfixed, I couldn't look away from it. I stayed up all night staring at it, the next morning I didn't go to work, something was just not right about that lamp.
I stopped eating, I left the couch only to use the bathroom at first, soon I stopped that too as I wasn't eating or drinking. I stared at the fucking lamp for 3 days before my wife got really worried, she had someone come and try to talk to me, by this time my cognizance was breaking up and my wife was freaking out. She took the kids to her mother's house just before I had my epiphany.... the lamp is not real.... the house is not real, my wife, my kids... none of that is real... the last 10 years of my life are not fucking real!
The lamp started to grow wider and deeper, it was still inverted dimensions, it took up my entire perspective and all I could see was red, I heard voices, screams, all kinds of weird noises and I became aware of pain.... a fucking shit ton of pain... the first words I said were "I'm missing teeth" and opened my eyes. I was laying on my back on the sidewalk surrounded by people that I didn't know, lots were freaking out, I was completely confused.
At some point a cop scooped me up, dragged/walked me across the sidewalk and grass and threw me face down in the back of a cop car, I was still confused.
I was taken to the hospital by the cop (seems he didn't want to wait for the ambulance to arrive) and give CT scans and shit...

It turns out that this entire life he'd lived was a kind of dream resulting from brain trauma after he was assaulted in the street by an American football player twice his size. So the screams and voices and cop and hospital scenes at the end are where he recovered consciousness. After which:

I went through about 3 years of horrid depression, I was grieving the loss of my wife and children and dealing with the knowledge that they never existed, I was scared that I was going insane as I would cry myself to sleep hoping I would see her in my dreams. I never have, but sometimes I see my son, usually just a glimpse out of my peripheral vision, he is perpetually 5 years old and I can never hear what he says.

I moved in to a rented house when i was pregnant with my second son.
We put our eldest in the back room ,he was nearly one.
He never settled in that room.
One night I stayed in there and I had horrible dreams.
Like witches standing over me.

My son would stand in his cot and say man and point behind me.
It was an awful atmosphere.
But I've loads of stories from that house if you want me to share.

Ok
When we had my 2nd sons christening, we held it in the house.
It was July and we had a small fire on.

Now you had to plug the rads in,and this was in the back bedroom.
So showing my aunt the house we went in to the bedroom and it was freezing.
Like see your breath.
And the plug was plugged in,the rads was roasting but that 4oom was so cold.

My partner went out one night,I was in bed asleep and I heard the front door opening.
It dragged across the stone before it opened.
I heard a bag,so I thought my partner had brought in a takeaway.
Went down and there was no one there.
No smell of a takeaway and the place was the same as when I went to bed.
Rang my partner and he came straight home.
Really freaked me out.

Partner and I were in bed, heard someone walking up the stairs, then falling over.
Partner hopped straight up and there was no one there.

I've never seen him in real life but I've seen him in my mind.
I know what he looks like.
A man about 70 heavy long jacket,hat.
Carries a bag similar to a bowling bag and carries a plastic bag.

That house was opposite my mils house, and when I described him she said that sounds like the man that lived there.
He didn't die in the house but he certainly never left.
