Has anyone had any woo experiences, particularly if it's something/someone you've seen? I know that not everyone believes, just I've had some odd experiences myself and it makes me wonder. Especially with Halloween next month and it being a little while since we've had a woo thread. Would love to hear your stories!

Cop out!

It’s an incredibly bold, arrogant and patronising statement to say that ‘all these stories have a rational explanation’ and then to add that ‘but people need to tell them’.

How on earth would you know either of those things?

Here is not the place for that debate, as has been made very clear by about 98% of those posting.

@CoffeeCantata of course doesn't. I suspect she's just here to annoy people.

I don't get why posters come on here to say they don't believe in ghost stuff, fair enough, there's loads of posts on MN I don't agree with but I don't comment on them I just scroll by, so why would you open and comment on a thread that you have no interest in? Just to try and belittle posters?

MoodyMargaret11 · 27/09/2025 15:28

Ok I'll share 1 of mine:

As a teen I had a room in the attic - converted attic, alongside other attic rooms which neighbours only used for storage (we were in a block of flats). My room was connected to our flat downstairs, but also had a bolted door leading to the long attic corridor. I was awake lying in bed early one morning, 3-4am. Heard someone walking and dragging their feet in that corridor. The sound was vety clear and loud, and coming from a distance towards my room. I thought, weird who would be up here this early? expecting any moment to hear keys unlocking another neighbouring door. Instead, the dragging footsteps continued on, until they stopped right outside my door and went silent. I felt really uneasy and just stayed frozen in bed. Then a minute or two later, the dragging re-started, but not going in the opposite direction. It was travelling exactly like before - from afar, intensifying as it approached and stoppped again by my room. This happened once or twice more, I was absolutely petrified. In the morning I told my parents who said "it must have been a cat or something". No way it was a cat and I cant think how it could have been a person either, unless they could teleport several times to the other side of the corridor. I felt whatever it was, was not human, "knew" I was in my room and was aiming to terrify me.

The thing that made it even creepier for me:
My room door was bolted, locked and barricaded with some stuff, then wardrobe was placed in front - my parents made it that way as the door was not going to be used. But just a day or 2 prior to my eerie experience, I had moved the wardrobe, undone the barricades and played with the locks. Did it so I can be free to sneak out when I wasnt allowed (strict parents). So I felt as though my unlocking the room had caused something else sinister to unlock too.
I re-did all I had undone after that, I was so scared that "they" will find a way in. Luckily never heard that noise again but havent forgotten this experience 2 decades later.

YumYa · 27/09/2025 15:38

Yes, but it’s MN and too many posters like to both piss on other people’s chips, and show their superiority. Threads like this are perfect for them.

I like to think it's true that people come to meet you when you die. A couple of days before my grandad died he said his brothers were here to meet him so they could go to the pub they used to drink at when they were all alive.

I know it's normal for this to happen when people come to the end of their life and hallucinations are common but I find it comforting to believe it's true.

Cynicalbut · 27/09/2025 17:29

I am very unwoo, as per my namechange. But when a dear friend was very ill, I had a dream about her. She said she had come to say goodbye. We hugged. It was very real and so I was not surprised when first thing next morning her son came to tell me she had died in the early hours.

Maybe it was just my brain anticipating events. But my friend had an extremely strong belief in the afterlife, which I don't.

If you get a chance to go,please do

There's loads to see-cliffords tower (where the Jews died-i think it's every 100 years or so,blood starts running down the walls)
The railway museum
The castle museum (this one is very good)
Whip-ma-whop-ma-gate (longest street name but the shortest street)
The minster
The building where guy fawkes was born/went school/the old star inn where he plotted the gunpowder plot
Dick turpin grave/where he was hung
The golden fleece pub (the most haunted pub in york)
All the 'gate' streets
The dungeons
The theatres
The bar walls
Jorvik centre (that has a viking poo!)

So much to see and do-you'd need a weekend to see half of it

If anyone is going and would like to find out the best places to eat/which attractions are good value for money/the bits that are a bit of a waste of time please pm me

I spent many an evening at Ye Olde Starre Inne during my uni years. Love York.

Used to live in a big semi detached job from the war rebuild with four housemates. Every single one of us felt uncomfortable, watched, and cold in there no matter how high the heat was turned up. Doors would open and close by themselves, stuff would be moved in weird places, taps going haywire. One of our number moved after he saw a woman he said was ‘clearly dead’ on the stairs staring at him with a horrible malevolent gaze.

one evening me and the other girl are watching Bake-off and we both at the same time become aware of heavy rasping breathing like right next to us in the room. There is no one else there. The kitchen door then flings itself open with a massive bang and we both basically shite ourselves and run out and stay with her boyfriend for the night. Someone from the church down the road came round to say prayers but it did nothing.

we get a new housemate and he lasts a week after he wakes up to find a woman (who matched the description of the one on the stairs by the housemate who left) crouched by the end of his bed staring at him. Think she hated men more whoever she was.

god i was glad to move out.

Where was the house?
That’s the kind of spooky story I love!

Loving this thread, it's Saturday night and I've got a pizza and a glass of red in hand while reading the ghostly tales!

arh25 · 27/09/2025 19:39

@BarilynBordeaux that is horrifying Shock no wonder he moved out!

I've also heard disembodied footsteps in my home before and at another family member's house... It's very unsettling and eerie

MoodyMargaret11 That sounds similar to the type of thing I had years ago, my cousin lived in a really old stone cottage, everything was fine until they started renovations, they had added an extra upstairs bedroom, took out the original staircase and moved it to another part of the house, ( it wasn't listed) and generally altered the layout of the place.

My cousin was going away for a night and I offered to stay in her cottage and look after the place and her two kittens, well never again. In the middle of the night in bed I heard the kittens playing on the landing, they were running up and down and generally being imps as kittens are, when suddenly I heard these HUGE heavy footsteps that could only come from a man wearing boots, I honestly thought someone had broken in and had made their way upstairs, this carried on for about 5 minutes while I lay in bed frozen to the spot not daring to move, my heart was pounding so much I thought it would burst, I just laid there all night and waited for dawn, it was awful. I told my cousin I would never ever stay in her cottage alone again.

Hillsmakeyoustrong · 27/09/2025 20:35

Not one of mine or DH's experience but DH's best friend. They both grew up on dartmoor and DH would go and stay at his friends on a weekend as they both lived very remotely. His friend lived in an extremely old cottage, the farmstead is in the Doomsday book. Anyway, DH never saw or felt anything in all the times he stayed there (and he is quite a sensitive person) but apparently it was haunted by an old man. There were four kids and everyone of them saw him as well as the mum. He would very occasionally sit on the kids beds at night. More so the girls. The mum (a very sensible nurse who was a little intimidating in truth) would see him more often, day and night, and would even occasionally speak to him. She forbade anyone to speak about him though, especially in the house. I once asked DH's best friend down the pub about him and he went really quiet and clearly didnt want to talk about it. He had a very strong influence over them all and it was a really weird set up. Anyway, they moved after 20 years and I said to DH I bet they are glad to get away from that old man. DH said apparently he followed them there but that the mum had said no, you cant stay here, go home and I think he left. We lost touch soon after that move but I'll never forget that family. I can't quite understand how, as a mum, you'd stay so long in a house that your kids were afraid to be in.

Anyone stayed at the youth hostel in St Briavels? We had a very interesting night in the "Hanging Room". It's where condemned prisoners spent their last days and the only way in or out is via the guardroom (also a dormitory now).

There had been events all evening with ouija boards and table turning but to be honest I saw nothing convincing.

However - we all went to bed just after midnight. It's very very basic accommodation, just bunk beds and bare floors and there were, I think, 8 of us in the room. I was in the lower bunk with DH in the one above me. The light had just been switched off when there was this almighty crash right in the middle of the room. The person nearest the light snapped it back on immediately but there was nothing to account for it.

OK- no one was particularly spooked so the light went back out and I for one went straight to sleep only to be woken around 3am by a sound from one of the other bunks. There were beautiful blue cylinders of light bouncing around the room pulsing gently from pale blue to dark blue and back again. I prodded DH awake and I think everyone was awake watching them. After a while I got bored and went back to sleep!

Greenmouldycheese · 27/09/2025 20:59

It was about 18 years ago. I was living with my parents where I had lived most of my life and never had anything happen until one night. I turned the light off and got into bed. There was a lamppost outside the bedroom window so room was never really that dark because the light would shine through. I laid there as my eyes adjusted to the dark, looked around the room and my eyes wondered to the door. The room was white and so was the door. Right infront of it was a tall pitch black figure. I couldn't believe what I was seeing and was blinking really hard, thinking I was seeing things. I got up from the bed, edged closer looking at this thing that was right infront of me. The strange thing is that I didn't feel scared even though what I'm describing is creepy as fuck. It was a feeling of calmness. It just stood there but I knew it was looking at me. I could make out random things in the room because of the street light outside, but this thing was pure black. I laid down, closed my eyes and went to sleep. I've never forgotten it.

For years I didn't know what this thing was. Why was it black? I happened to mention it one day to a friend and she told me that they are called shadow people. I googled and so many people have seen them. It's very common.

I've never mentioned this infront of my children. I lost my dad this year and I don't talk about him passing either as it's too painful. My 3 year old son woke up last week and the very first thing he said to me was "I saw shadow man last night". I couldn't believe he said it and casually asked him if it said anything to him. He replied 'Don't look. Good boy'. Then my son said that it told him to "read books and make a mess" in a really happy chipy way. I feel like maybe my dad visited my son, realised my son could actually see his spirit and didnt want him to look. My son could have been dreaming, but referring to it as shadow man and the the things he said sound exactly like my dad. I know what I saw that night and I can't help but think my son saw something too.

@MoodyMargaret11 so you couldn't get out of your room?

The poster stated that the room was also connected to the downstairs of their flat so I presume there was another door to get downstairs? I have to say the thought of my bedroom having a door that leads to a long corridor of deserted storage rooms and that anyone could access is extremely creepy. I suppose it's no different to a hotel room or something but it just feels different for some reason.

Greenmouldycheese · 27/09/2025 21:44

I have another one.

A few years ago, partner and I were laying in bed watching TV in silence. I turned to him and told him that his tooth was going to fall out. It came from nowhere and he asked my what I was on about. I repeated it and left it at that. The next day, he came home from work and called me a witch. I asked him why and he told me his tooth had snapped off and showed me a chunk of tooth. My partner had perfect teeth and never had any issues. The tooth that snapped wasn't a front tooth so it's not like I'd noticed a crack or anything when he was speaking. I can't explain it.

I'm not even much of a believer. I'm matter of fact and analytical but I've had enough experiences to know that there are some things that science is yet to discover.

Correct, there was a second door we added to connect to our flat via stairs. The other (original) door was next to the corridor and my bed also happened to be next to that door, pushed to the wall. So when the footsteps came to a halt, they were literally opposite my bed.

Yes, you'd think I'd leap out and run down the stairs but as I said, I was scared to move/make any noise and my body kind of froze. Some time after the footsteps had stopped I did get out of course, and for awhile after slept with the other door (to the flat) fully open.
